This album was a riot to make and a dream come true as far as flirting with that vintage New Orleans sound. There is something magic about a tuba or clarinet that can transport you right to the French Quarter in the Big Easy. Vintage compressors and ribbon microphones help make the recording more authentic without a doubt. Modern miking techniques like close miking all the drums is not what I was going for on this recording. We used old style recording technics for a more traditional sound. This record is not just one style of blues but a few different classic styles. One common thread is the old time instruments throughout this new record. Fiddle, banjo, washboard, Weissenborn, lap steel and old fashioned hand claps all add to the old school vibe. Getting to record with veteran musicians who have been in the business much longer than I have been was also a treat and major learning experience for me. A lot of these gentlemen have been in the business since the 50’s and some of them are in their late 80’s now, but you’d never know it with the amazing contributions they make to this new album. This record touches a bunch of topics from, lost love, positive thinking, humorous themes, spirituals, and down right down and out subject matter. I’m very proud of the writing on this record and put a lot of time working and reworking the lyrics till they were just right. I wrote the title track (One Step Closer) for my aunt who was sick, and I got to sing it to her in hospice, so It really means a lot to me. I also like the topic of looking on the bright side and have a couple songs like (All You Got To Do) and (Walkin’ In The Sunshine). There are a couple cheeky songs on this newest project that will make you blush and giggle at the same time like (Do What You Did Last Night) or (Just What I’m Talking About). I wrote (Just What I’m Talking About) with Bessie Smith in mind. I never like to do the same thing over and over and always try to find new sounds and styles of the blues. Ive been to New Orleans many times and the music, art and culture have had a profound effect on me and my music.

LINER NOTES
They've been called "the world's #1 houserockin' band," and there's a good reason. For the last sixteen years, Lil' Ed And The Blues Imperials have been pounding out some of the rawest, roughest, toughest boogie and blues that can be heard anywhere. On bandstands across the U.S.A. and around the world, they carry on in the great Chicago tradition of Hound Dog Taylor, Elmore James, and Ed and Pookie's mentor and uncle, the late J.B. Hutto. Their wild shows have won them a legion of loyal fans, who proudly call themselves Ed Heads.

There's an almost telepathic communication between these musicians. Ed and his brother Pookie have been playing together since they were kids. Mike and Kelly first played with Ed fourteen years ago. Paul, who sat in on three tunes on this album, is stepping in as the newest Blues Imperial, and the band is now touring with a three-guitar front line. 

 Like all of Ed's recordings, this album was cut live in the studio, with only a tiny bit of overdubbing. It was recorded in just three short days, and there were so many terrific performances that we had to leave a few on the shelf for next time. The songs poured out fast and furious, and the energy never flagged, just like the band's houserockin' live shows. So, heads up! If you're not yet an official Ed Head, this album will certainly make you one.
