He Is The Voice I Hear’ is my first all new work since “Lady Of Sorrows.” It’s been a long journey from there to here. I’m so thrilled to continue the story and finally realize my dream of bringing together an ensemble of live musicians.

This record was a joy to create with my engineering and production partner, Rupert Murray, Davide Rossi on strings and Christoforo LaBarbera on keys. The vinyl was mastered and cut by Tim Xavier for Manmade Mastering.  We’ve also put some special touches into the design of the record itself. 

Incredible thanks to Adam Rowe, Andrew Gordon, Jake Nelson and everyone that helped make this record possible at all.

In advance of new releases from both artists, Ian William Craig and Olivier Alary trade remixes on this wonderful two track digital single.
 
Following the widespread critical acclaim of his brilliant ‘Centres’ album (July 2016), which made it into numerous end of year ‘best of’ lists (including Uncut, Drowned In Sound, The Quietus, The 405, Popmatters and Metacritic), Vancouver-based vocalist / composer Ian William Craig takes on ‘Nollywood’ from Olivier’s forthcoming debut album, ‘Fiction / Non-Fiction’, which is due out in February next year. Running the stems of the track through his studio and a circuit-bent Audiotronics 147 and a Ekdahl Moisturizer, Ian reinvents Olivier’s lusciously swooning ‘Nollywood’, adding his own voice as source matter, and scuffing and morphing the track through a patina of tape distortion, overlaying a web of glistening texture and looping rhythm to repurpose it in a stunning, sprawling new work.

By way of return, Montreal-based Frenchman Olivier takes on Ian’s album gem ‘A Single Hope’, extracting the pop song hiding behind Ian’s billowing textures in order to render it in a bright new light. Before starting the remix, Olivier decided to restrict electronic elements to a minimum, so what you hear here are purely acoustic instruments. As Olivier explains, “some of them are processed, but I tried to keep the integrity of their sonic nature. From the original piece, only the vocals were kept. Then I recorded a clarinet choir to replace the original organ. Some flutes and naturally detuned accordion were added to add an eerie quality to the chords.” Olivier added new drums made out of found objects (an accordion case for bass drum, a broken cymbal, some sheets of paper hit by brushes, a shaker and a spring reverb gently hit by a stick). To add a ‘stuttery’ quality to the piece, he then recorded some acoustic guitar, played at double-speed. To add more rhythmical elements, some fast, arpeggiated saxophone and slow melody lines were also added with the aim to create a remix which could simultaneously be perceived as both slow and languid as well as fast and jittery.

Available as a digital-only release, ‘Remixes’ is released on January 13th. A brilliant single showing two artists at the top of their game opens out a new year for FatCat’s pioneering 130701 imprint in spectacular style.

Keiji Haino, one of the foremost exponents of the Japanese avant-garde, always provides a masterclass in constantly shifting improvisation. John Butcher is a saxophonist of rare grace and power, who has expanded the vocabulary of the saxophone far beyond the conventions of jazz and other musics, to encompass a staggering range of multiphonics, overtones, percussive sounds, and electronic feedback. 

Haino and Butcher met when Butcher opened for Fushitsusha at the show Cafe Oto arranged at St. John, Hackney - 5 years ago. In 2016 they were invited to play two duo concerts – at The Empty Gallery in Hong Kong and at Cafe Oto in London.

Otoroku is proud to present the audio documentation of their first UK meeting. Recorded live at Cafe Oto in July 2016 the results are an uncompromising milieu of swirling sound played out as a total union of these two legendary performers. 2017’s equal parts somnambulant and sultry Sleeprydr 7” was aptly described as “psychedelic rock that hits like a dream despite undoubtedly seeking to soundtrack nightmares” (-Stereogum). Thankfully, Slow Sundown, Holy Motors’ debut full length release, finds the Estonian dreamcatchers utilizing a similar sonic palette ranging from dark psychedelic pop to shoegaze-inflected western music. But while Sleeprydr, much like 2015’s Heavenly Creatures 7”, provided only a fleeting glimpse into the dreamscape that their music evokes, Slow Sundown’s eight tracks offer a more immersive experience for those brave enough to take the ride. While the guitar lines from lonely cowboy ballads like “Honeymooning” could easily serve as the central themes for unwritten Morriccone scores, dystopian anthems like the rhythmically propelled “Signs” break new ground for the band and demonstrate that Holy Motors are not bound by their influences. Thematically the album is comprised primarily of sad love songs centered around the idea of motion – the motion of a satellite orbiting a planet, the motion of a passenger riding shotgun in a car – as it relates to stellar-scale and existential isolation. Produced by Merchandise’s Carson Cox and recorded at Brooklyn’s Kutch1 Studios when the band was visiting the US on tourist visas, Slow Sundown is a beautiful alien artifact that definitively delivers on everything we have been promised by Holy Motors’ work to date.

About Holy Motors

Hailing from Estonia, Holy Motors is a five-piece twang and reverb band featuring three guitarists. They are cowboys at heart who come off as shoegazers by their presence and dreamcatchers in their music. In their time, Holy Motors have played alongside bands such as Kaleidoscope, Craft Spells, Sic Alps, Dirty Fences, and Rips. They will appear at South by Southwest in 2018 and are currently organizing a series of US tour dates centered around the festival.
