Ryley Walker is a 24 year-old singer/songwriter and guitarist from Chicago. His debut album will be released in April 2014 on Tompkins Square.

8th volume of Tompkins Square label's acclaimed acoustic guitar series focuses on impossibly rare private press recordings 1968-1995.

Tompkins Square label presents the 8th volume of Imaginational Anthem, the acclaimed series focusing on acoustic guitar, particularly in the American Primitive vein.

Since 2005, the series has revived interest in old masters of the genre while also giving many folks their very first taste of artists like William Tyler, Steve Gunn, Cian Nugent or Daniel Bachman.

Volume 8, compiled by hardcore record collectors Michael Klausman (former used LP buyer for NYC's recently shuttered Other Music) and Brooks Rice, features some of the best and most obscure private press guitar records virtually no one has heard. In fact, so-called guitar soli expert, Tompkins Square owner Josh Rosenthal, had never heard of a single artist on the comp (except for Perry Lederman, whose track was Josh's sole contribution to the collection). "Just goes to show what a bottomless pit music discovery from the past continues to be. There's just no end to all the riches from past decades."

Amidst the obscure entries are bits of rock-star lore; Joe Bethancourt was supposedly given a sitar by an admiring Jimi Hendrix, and Perry Lederman was reportedly responsible for teaching Bob Dylan how to fingerpick. But the true joy of this collection is derived from discovering incredible acoustic guitar performances completely lost to time. Until now.

After All- Demo

A note about the song by singer Danny Musengo.

-Last year around this time I was talking to my therapist about a cartoon I saw as a kid, The Grasshopper and The Ant.

Even as a child I worried I was the grasshopper... playing music and gallivanting about while the ants prepared for the long winter ahead.

I explained to my therapist that I had just split with my girlfriend, left my apartment, left my job and to top it off... I had given up the one thing that kept my lifelong existential crisis at bay... alcohol. The long winter had indeed come and I was feeling more and more like the grasshopper in the story.

My therapist just looked at me knowingly and asked "Have you ever watched the cartoon until the end?" I hadn't.

"...the ants realize their lives are dull without the grasshopper and his music... so they invite him in to play for them."

This was both a relief and a revelation.

Later that night Dave and I were in the backyard taking a smoke break from a frustrating recording session. We sat silently staring at the stars for some time before Dave suggested that we put away the song we were working on and write a new one. It was 3am.

We got up and walked back down into the studio. Dave sat at the Rhodes, pressed record and started playing the giant chords you hear at the beginning of the track.

They reminded me of the story from my therapy session.

I approached the mic and started to sing.

The whole song came out in one long breath. No edits. No doubling back.

Just one clear cut message from God to the grasshopper.

Gone Gone Beyond - Things Are Changing

Her new seasonal single, The Three Deaths of Red Spectre, is out via every digital service, worldwide.

This song was originally born of this live scoring piece I did for a early 20th century silent film called ‘Red Spectre’, so it wasn’t from the outset designed as a Christmas song, but it does feel like a winter song to me. The opening is cold and spiky; it puts me in mind of dark nights and city light reflections on wet tarmac. Then it has these sort of changing seasons in the song, like windy rain and calm sweeping over in sequence. Then back to the start; with the lights all over again.

This time of year is my favourite, when it gets dark early and bitter cold outside; you need to have a hostile environment in the first place to have something to wrap up snug and cosy against. That’s kind of the whole point of a winter festival right? It’s essence is in the contrast.
