For the second edition of Rugged Sessions we have invited the multi-talented Adam Stromstedt. The Sydney based DJ/Producer has had some excellent releases on labels like KANN, Banoffee-pies, Gestalt Records, Bossmusik and more. 
Adam is also host of his own radio show called Always Sometimes and he is co-founder of Lyssna Records. He has recorded a beautiful laidback 1 hour mix for us filled with soulful and dubby house with a lot of warm jazz influences. Just like his production style, this is right our cup of tea. Helge Tømmervåg aka Mind over MIDI is a mysterious figure coming from the deep north of Europe, Norway. Residing in Kristianssund, Tømmervåg explored electronic msuic since his techno excursions in the late nineties to then land into the ambient/dub/experimental realms. Mind over MIDI has been a trustworthy beacon in the icey seas of Nordic electronic music.

RADIO.D59B / HARVEST REPORT #6 w/ Stereociti

Mini Nik Patrick and I co-curated the 'Ambient Space' together at The Palace Artist residency that took place over 10 days at Gorzanov Palace in Poland in 2021.  

We gave the space a name to reflect the music that would be played in there and the idea was that the 'Ambient Groove Cave' would be mainly host to world groove ambiences, disco, jazz and funk rhythms. 

We had some great sets in there! I have to admit that for the majority of the time the ‘Ambient Space’ was in fact a dance floor, with Patrick playing records for over 9 hours at a stretch on multiple occasions. Maestro! There was a hip hop set from Evan that was truly memorable, an amazing disco set from Mat, and Jared also provoked wild scenes with his usual blend of Latin electronic bangers. 

People did give their interpretations of 'Ambient sets' throughout the week though, and often doing so for the first time which was lovely to witness.

The atmosphere that year was that of starvation, two years into Covid restrictions, people clearly needed to come together and dance and the space really provided for it. You have to feed that energy when it is there. 

With that being said, this one is from a dedicated 'Ambient Night' midweek and I had resolved to play that evening in our space starting sometime after dinner. 

In truth I had all but forgotten about this recording, having come across it again last week organising some music on another laptop. I then listened to it several times through and I was really surprised - firstly by the length of it, but also how fresh it sounded to me. I had no idea what was going to come next and revisiting it was a real pleasure. 

I mastered the volume levels in several small sections and on a few transitions to aid the listening experience. I also snipped two tracks out that I thought took the listener in another direction - in order to keep more intimacy - and I decided to release it on my Soundcloud so it could find a wider audience. 

The sound in the room was excellent. We had two active PA's in the corners, my two JBL passive speakers either side of the low DJ booth, and a giant subwoofer in one corner (thanks Jacob for those). The lighting an elegant blue and red, and shadows playing off the low vaulted brickwork arches and hidden alcoves. 

Mixing is made so much easier when you can hear exactly what you're doing, and playing live really thrusts you into the present moment. One is able to work off of the movement and the different people in the space which are a source of constant inspiration and reassurance that gives a recording real vibrancy.  

I really miss this space we created! It can be a bit of a blur sometimes DJ'ing - between conversations and concentrating on the next mix - but so many moments came back to me sparked by different tracks. The scenes of people coming in to sit, lie down, or huddle and plan their night ahead, snatches of conversation I had or overheard, and those moments of connection when you can see someone really listening deeply. 

The feeling I had after this event was that of real accomplishment - knowing that I can go somewhere just with some sound equipment and a solid musical partner, and we can curate line ups, decorate, clean up, freshen it up, do it again night after night and host some magical experiences for people. 

So I'm extra glad I have something else to remember it by here. It was a complicated time for me, and I'm quite proud of this mix, stringing together so much of my favourite music, with some intense and beautiful moments scattered throughout, which pretty much sums up my experience that week. 

Well, enough words, I hope you enjoy this mix. For the most part they are good background soundscapes and I can tell you that it’s animal tested... (they remained sound asleep)
