This Little Life

No Sky God is the band’s eponymous first album. Initially released in the fall of 2011, this first record leans more towards the electric folk rock of artists like Neil Young and Bob Dylan than the band’s later output. Primarily a collaboration between band founders Stu Watson and James Marceda, the album also features contributions from Jeremy Gustin (Delicate Steve, Albert Hammond, Jr) on drums, Benjamin Lazar Davis (Okkervil River, Joan As Police Woman) on acoustic bass, Nat Baldwin (Nat Baldwin, Dirty Projectors) on acoustic bass, and Sam Mickens (The Dead Science) on background vocals. This expanded edition of the release features ten songs, including a live version of “Go West” captured at the CMJ Music Marathon in Brooklyn in 2013 and featuring Delicate Steve’s Steve Marion as guest on lead guitar. The songs on the record include folk ballads like “How I Am Blind” and “Grey Eyes” as well as more up-tempo rock numbers like “Brittle Heart,” “Go West,” and “Always Waiting for the Light.” Recorded almost entirely live in the studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, the album also includes versions of two covers that long featured in the band’s live set, Larkin Grimm’s “The Butcher” and Alex Chilton’s “Kangaroo,” the latter of which was added for this release, along with two other unreleased songs, the simple, poetic “Go South” and the searching, enigmatical “Screen Test.” A document of a band’s early stage, this record points the way towards the ways No Sky God would evolve over the subsequent fifteen years.
