this song tells a true story of me sitting next to a 87 year old lady on the train. 



Dilys, we sat next to one another on the train, you said your husband died 4 years ago and for the most part your alone, your many teddy bears don’t keep you warm at night and you don’t believe in a god, you husband spent 5 years as a prisoner of war , you sent him letter upon letter, 

but those annoying little Nazis didn’t let any letter through, the youth today don’t know, you’ve forgotten more than they will ever know know know know know know know, you had no children of your own, no children of your own 
 
I said I would write a song about you, but you did not, you did not believe me, so listen so listen to this, oh Dilys
 
You got off the train before I did, you said this journey would have been harder without you here, and 68 years between us but we laughed, like youngsters would laugh, so Dilys I wish you well, you said you would remember my name, and I’ll remember yours, I will, I will, I will., oh Dilys

LYRICS: 
The boy sits in a field tall grass above his head, and he’s thinking of the path that his ancestors did tread and as he’s dreaming of the future a mist does descend, and he wonders if this is the beginning or this is the end 

And out of the mist a tall creature does appear, his eyes wide and friendly, his face full of years , he says “we’re going on a journey in my hot air balloon, and the time is now so we must get going soon”. 

They flew over the houses and the streets they use to know, over trains going fast and people going slow, there were snow on the mountains and boats on the sea, and there were lovers in the forest carving their names into a tree 

The boys says “where are we going, where are we going to, I’m scared of the future and I’m mildly scared of you, the creature looked down and said “don’t be scared of the unknown”, we’re going to a place in which I have grown 

With a sudden gush of wind the balloon fell from the sky, and the boy shut his eyes and hoped he wouldn’t die, the creature was calm, he had done this before so he landed the hot air balloon and he opened the door 

The boy walked out and he couldn’t believe his eyes, there was a flock of sheep floating through the skies followed by a magic carpet on which their shepherd did fly and the boy wondered what was going on. 

So he walked through this land with the creature by his side, to his left was a painter, painting the tides, and to his right a pack of wolves did cry to the rise and fall of the moon. 

They entered the forest and the trees they hung low, everything was dark and nothing there did grow apart from a single yellow rose that the boy put in his hair 

Out of the forest, the snow it did fall, the creature held an umbrella high above the boy then out the of snow appeared an empty platform, and they waited patiently for a train 

From far in the distance a train did arrive with a thousand polar bears passengers inside, the creature said to the boy “are you ready for the ride” and the boy said” yes I think I am” 

So they sped through the hills and over mountains they did go, over old wooden bridges withered from the cold, and the boy stared out of the window and smiled at all he could see 

They travelled through the desert to the setting sun, over streams and rivers to where it all begun, and through the wind and the rain until the days were done, they rode through the land 

All of a sudden, the train it did stop, the creature said to the boy “this is where we both get off”, and all the polar bear climbed to the top of the train to wave their goodbyes

The pair, now alone, walked through a featureless land, no blade of grass, no grain of sand, and on the horizon a great sea did stand and creature said “ this is where I must go” 

At the waters edge, nothing more was said, the boy looked at the creature, not a single tear was shed, and the creature laid his hand upon the boys head, and gave him a wink of his eye 

The creature turned around and walked slowly to the sea, to go to a place where forever he would be, and with one great leap he leapt into sea and in the blink of an eye he was gone. 

The boy stood still, alone now on the shore, he stared into the distance and hoped there would be more, and the yellow rose it fell to the floor and drifted away on the wind.

By the time he was 15, singer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Carter Tanton was already playing bar shows in his hometown of Baltimore.  Two years later, he caught the attention of Gary E. Smith, best known for discovering and producing The Pixies.  After working together for a year, they parted ways, but Tanton never slowed down.  In the mid-2000's he released a couple of EPs with his band Tulsa, prompting Rolling Stone's David Fricke to claim "…his indie-seraphim voice is not of this world…", and after a particularly impressive live set KEXP's John Richards said "…he's one of the best singer-songwriters in the country today."  Beyond his critical acclaim, Tanton's early work was cited as an inspiration by his old friend Adam Granduciel of The War on Drugs.  As Granduciel recalled in an interview with Pitchfork, "He was sleeping in someone's basement, playing every instrument, going through this breakup,...That was the first time I saw someone make music obsessively. I’d never seen anyone living inside of something, to that level."  

Over the years, Tanton has toured and recorded with numerous artists including Marissa Nadler, Strand of Oaks, Lower Dens, and The War on Drugs. In 2012, he assembled Freeclouds, his first collection of songs for Western Vinyl.  A couple of years later, Tanton moved to England where he wrote all of the songs on his new album Jettison the Valley. The change of environment, and his rediscovery of early British influences including Richard Thompson, Nick Drake and John Cale sparked a powerful shift in perspective, which led him to write his most cohesive and personal work to date.  Other than the pedal steel featured on two songs, Tanton engineers and plays every instrument on the album.  His old friend and collaborator Marisa Nadler contributes lead vocals to "Jettison the Valley", and Sharon Van Etten sings on "Twenty-Nine Palms" and "Through the Garden Gates".   

More about Jettison the Valley in his own words: 
"Jettison the Valley began in a little dot of a town outside Bristol called Hambrook in the Fall of 2013. I had just moved to England with my girlfriend where we lived in a caravan on her family's plot of land with the M5 motorway on one side, and a horse farm on the other.  To get away from the incessant low rumbling of cars, I often walked along the area's ancient public footpaths that carve strange ways through the countryside. On those walks, my previous 30 years in America billowed and collapsed in front of me. As I stood there in the blowback, the constant push of time seemed to finally relent, and I found enough distance from it to see my past in clear broad strokes.  After a few months we moved to Oxford and lived in a little attic apartment up on a hill. I spent most days watching the weather roll through the valley and writing these songs about my relationship ending.  Eventually, I felt I had to come back to the states to record them.  I consider this my first solo record. The other two releases I've put out under my own name since 2005 were simply collections of scattered recordings, mixtapes essentially. Jettison was written in one long sitting, each song feeding the next."
