32 fresh interpretations of Civil War songs from a collection of artists who span genres and generations.

ATO Records and music supervisor Randall Poster ('Moonrise Kingdom,' 'Boardwalk Empire,' 'Rave on Buddy Holly') have joined forces to release 'Divided & United,' a two-disc set of Civil War songs brought to life through fresh interpretations by the pioneers, Hall of Famers and rising young stars of country, bluegrass, folk and beyond. The collection celebrates music deeply vital to the history and spirit of America in tribute to the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Each song offers a unique window on the past, with themes exploring race, identity and reconciliation in a manner that echoes profoundly today.

The tremendous talents on 'Divided & United' span several generations and genres. Combined they have won close to 200 GRAMMY Awards, numerous Country Music Awards and include Rock And Roll Hall of Famers, Country Music Hall of Famers and Bluegrass Hall of Famers.

The songs represent hope and loss, camaraderie and compassion, and the distinct voices of the North and South; born out of the specific battles and turning points, sentimental, parlor songs and spirituals of the period, songs that soldiers brought into battle with them, abolition and minstrel songs, and more.

It's all about sunshine, fun times, that feeling of adventure but also the chains of reality and the sometimes misled empowerment of making decision's for better or worse. Blast Off Through the Wicker documents Art Feynman looking for life in the lifeless, questioning what it means to be living.  There is a calm, disciplined pocket to be felt in everything Feynman does; krautrock slink, staccato bounce, and pentatonic bursts of Nigerian Highlife fuzz pour on the temporal canvas with unquestionable ease, never falling in the wrong place. Even more admirable is, that his “canvas” is a four-track tape recorder, and that Blast Off features no loops or drum machines despite its aesthetically faithful motorik and afrobeat underpinnings.  Nowhere is this fact more surprising than on album standout “Slow Down” which pulses along infectiously with a crunchy backbeat, and deftly arpeggiating bass lines that are so locked-in that it would be hard to fault an unknowing ear for assuming the whole thing is tediously programmed.

There are gentler sides to Blast Off that conjure the spacey tenderness of Arthur Russell inventively and respectfully, without adopting their muse’s palette wholesale. In this regard Blast Off is an endearing collection of songs that capture the ear with warm-yet-clear cassette aesthetics and spot-on musicianship, both of which form an angle that points lovingly to Feynman’s deep and varied influences. Make no mistake-- this one truly is alive.

Tom Stephens released his debut album ‘What Lies in the Difference’ in 2016. It received glowing reviews with THE BRAG awarding it their ‘Album of the Week’ and praising it as “an exceptional record in all senses of the word: as a debut album it is startlingly self contained and assured, but as a passionate, strikingly pure record, it stands apart from the crowd.”
 
What Lies in the Difference is an album built on the observation of the relationships that surround Tom Stephens.  It is an exploration of the depths of decisions and consequence held together by intimately glowing instrumentation and an earnest, compelling vocal.  The album was recorded on friend and musical collaborator Julia Jacklin’s farm in the Blue Mountains of NSW and produced alongside Ryan K Brennan.    
 
‘Down to Rest’, the album’s lead single radiates with modest guitar, luscious backing vocals and Stephens’ authentically Australian voice.  The track was well received by critics, having been awarded high rotation on Unearthed Radio and spins on 2Ser, Fbi and ABC Radio National. 
 
Tom Stephens has been consistently honing his songwriting craft since releasing his first EP in late 2012.  In 2014, Tom Stephens released his sophomore EP ‘Embers’ which was praised for its tender portrayal of life and place and its resonant but grounded atmosphere.  While not betraying the thoughtful lyricism and intimate sound displayed on Embers, What Lies in the Difference marks a maturing into a robust sound that dances between folk and alt-rock.
