The Aurora Borealis track started by experimenting with some of the sounds in the Arturia Pigments 2 software synth. Several sounds chosen sounded ethereal which brought to mind the shimmering Northern Lights. 

Imagine the sun going down the stars coming out and then the Aurora Borealis light show starts. You can understand how ancient people imagined the lights were spirits in the sky.

This music came about while thinking about a relative named Paul who was a warehouse manager near an airport at that time. 

I imagined Paul’s day starting when he arrived at work with aircraft passing overhead. I thought about all the products coming and going to and from the warehouse and all the logistics involved in the process. There would be busy times and quieter times in the day as shipping containers arrived and were unloaded then lorries being loaded and sent on their way etc. (listen out for a lorry reversing tone in the track!). Finally, after a busy day, you hear Paul leaving work and going home.

It seems amazing that this type of activity is going on all the time all over the world keeping shops and businesses stocked with the products they all need. 

At this point in time (2022) it should remind us how important activities like this and many others are in keeping our societies ticking over.

The full Lighter Than Air track is available on YouTube. 

For this track, the E Lydian scale was used which is all the black notes plus two white notes on the piano keyboard. The Lydian scale is said to have a strange, ethereal quality. The Lydian scale sounds like the major scale until that fourth note hits, and suddenly, you’re left floating in space. This is why the  “Lighter Than Air” track title was chosen.

The aim of this music was to try and compose a track that had a mystical or magical tone to it.

Tonal Essences (TE) is all about composing and experimenting with digital music of all types using a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW).

All of the current tracks released by TE are instrumentals. When creating a new piece of music the process may start with an interesting new sound a simple storyline or title or an image that the music attempts to paint in sound.

All the Tonal Essences music is composed on a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) more often than not using digital (MIDI) instruments with some effects and audio loops.

TE music is often inspired by topics in science, technology, space and nature.
