The Pi Song!

This piece is an attempt to write music using common mathematical sequences and constants while still taking human emotion into account. The melody of each part is based on a sequence, while the surrounding chords and arpeggios are simply accompaniment to that melody, and have no mathematical base. The numbers are used as the intervals in the key of D Aeolian. An explanation of the different parts is as follows:

0:00 : A sequence of the first 20 primes (mod 7) in a ratio of 5/3 8th notes/ 8th note rests. This ratio is a fibonacci approximation of the golden ratio.

0:18 : Primes 21 - 40 (mod 7), again in a ration of 5/3.

0:37 : The first 20 numbers of the triangular sequence (mod 7), again in a ratio of 5/3.

0:56 : See (0:00)

1:15 : See (0:18)

1:34 : The bass part plays the first 8 decimal places of the constant "e", while the melody is the first 24 decimal places of "pi".

The rest of the piece is a repeat of parts one and two.

The Mathematician

I wrote this one as a fun side project in High School. I used the numbers in Pi (3.14ect...)as note values in a certain scale for the melody(i wish i remembered the key but i wrote this years ago). then used counterpoint (or at least what i learned of counterpoint halfway thru senior year in music theory) for the accompanying parts. 

So I converted 10 digits of PI to base 12 (Dozenal), and used the first 7 non-repeating digits (I only had 6 different digits so I added one extra) to create a scale.

The numbers are: 0,1,3,4,6,8,9
Transposed to A the notes are: A,Bb,C,Db,Eb,F,Gb

I thought this sounded pretty interesting so I thought I should share :)

[Electronic]Experiment 124: Dozenal Pi Based Scale

This music that I made is called "Pi" because this music is made out of Pi fraction. The numbers that I used is 3.14159 26535 89793 23846 26433 83279 50288 41971 69399 37510 58209 74944 59230 78164 06286. The key for this is 1=A, 2=B, 3=C, 4=D, 5=E, 6=F#, 7=G, 8=A, 9=B, 10=C. My music piece is in A, B, A structure, and my aver-all music tempo is 150. You may be feel fast, but I think fast is good. The instrument I use in my piece is only drum and piano. So, my music piece is pretty fast, but I think that is good.

Pi Music

Do you know the first 50 digits of pi (after the decimal)? If you're a musician I suspect after this little exercise you'll know them too. Try this: assume middle C is 1, (I made B below middle C 0), D is 2, E is 3, all the way up to 9 being D. So the melody for 3.1415... is mi do fa do sol re re (back down an octave) la sol mi sol do, etc...

Comment from my dad: This illustrates why music is such an efficient memory algorithm. Any pianist can learn this piece in a few minutes and effectively memorize Pi to 50 places, and memorize it for life by playing it once in a while. Yet, if you tried to memorize those 50 numbers, it would take a huge effort (if you ever succeed at all) and maintaining that memory for life would be nearly impossible. Ah! the magic of music.
