about "Gringo" (original by Little Feat):
One song that hasn't been covered much is Little Feat's "Gringo," a Bill Payne composition originally recorded two years after bandleader Lowell George's demise when the band had already broken up, and included on the odds-and-ends compilation Hoy-Hoy!. This 1984 cover by singer-actor Arnold McCuller is one of the tracks on Yacht Soul 2 that best exemplify the concept that binds all these recordings together, the very definition of what we call "Yacht Soul".

Welcome Back, friends, to the Yacht Soul cruise that never ends!
This theme, explored at length in the previous installment of this series, is a fertile one that just keeps on giving, and give it certainly does on the tracks we have dug up for your perusal, enlightenment, edification and enjoyment on Volume 2.

For those just joining us, the concept here concerns R&B and soul artists mining the songbooks of their white contemporaries for cover versions that serve the dual purposes of potentially garnering some crossover radio airplay as well as introducing great songs to segments of the listening public who might otherwise miss them. Some of these versions might have come about because they were personal favorites of the artist in question, others might have been strongly suggested by their labels or by the publishing company, but all of them provide an entirely new perspective on what were already fantastic songs to begin with.

So there you have it--a further dig into this nebulous concept that reveals more unexpected connections and crossed paths. Understanding the hows and whys of the way these particular covers and collaborations came to be is as fascinating as just enjoying the music itself, and there really is a lot of great music to dig into this time around! We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we did putting it together.

Arnold McCuller - Gringo (taken from YACHT SOUL - The Cover Versions 2)

My co-host Greg Middleton took the controls for episode 176 and he welcomed special guest from France, Jean-Marie aka Vibes4YourSoul.

Vibes4YourSoul (aka V4YS) is a French DJ and producer, part of collectives/labels Partyfine (Paris/Reims) & Too Slow To Disco (Berlin).

His eclectic musical world blends the Jazz/Disco/Funk roots, to colourful Afro-Brazilian vibes, as well as contemporary House/Electro and indie sounds. As a DJ, he's shaking these influences together to create a funky conundrum where styles and times matter less than the groove thread between them.

As a producer, he frequently adds his groovy touch to old gems through edits and remixes, either self-released on his busy Soundcloud page, or on vinyl/digital for reference labels like Too Slow To Disco, Partyfine, Hot Digits, Act Of Sedition...He also occasionally releases official remixes for contemporary pop/electro bands (L'Impératrice, Poolside or Plano...).

Ep 176: Feel Good Friday Show (Greg Middleton And Vibes4YourSoul)

What would Christmas be without presents? Slow Mo Lounge is back with the 7th annual 'Festive Disco' and for the first time (ever) it features an international producer and deejay. 

This time it features the non-smoking, 5'11", spotlight-avoiding music producer, crate digger, rare DJ but all-round music aficionado, originally from the UK's East Midlands but currently living in the Middle East, YSE Saint Laur' Ant.

He plays a slow-burning, genre-bending 45-minute set, followed by Slow Mo Lounge (South Africa) founder, Kongisto.

The mix begins with 45 minutes of original samples, soul, hip hop, rarities, nu jazz, loops and weirded-out samples over hypnotic shuffles - breezy, disco-drenched yacht rock.

After 45 minutes, Kongisto, plays household favourite slow-burners, 2023 released disco edits, and unreleased edits, collected from some of the best genre-based producers around the globe.

Popular for his smash hit, ‘Warm Wind Brewing’ and ‘I Own The Boogie’ off his 2013 EP, ‘Beards’, YSE Saint Laur’ Ant’s credits include labels like Whiskey Disco, Editorial, Pressed For Time, Vinyl Only, Swedish Brandy, Lost My Dog, Ornate Music, City Fly, Pickpocket, and Blockhead Recordings (to name a few).

This man is a giant producer and his musical ability is telling of the accolade and prestige.

More than ever we long for harmony and beautiful ways of distraction in the summer of 2020 considering the fact that the Corona pandemic forced the entire live music scene and club industry to shut down while we’re also witnessing the unstoppable protests against racism and social injustice in America (and other parts of the world), a country that is still run by a madman. So, inevitable change is in the air but things are currently still unclear and we’re witnessing the everyday struggle to make this change happen. Every now and then it’s good to let off some steam but – as just mentioned – that gets kind of tricky when the clubs and parties are closed. There are, however, alternatives – parties in the park, alone or together with friends; something a bit purer and intimate, maybe. And of course, you still have the option to party by yourself or switch your mind off by listening to good music, right?

Needless to mention that the beloved Too Slow To Disco sampler series from DJ Supermarkt has become a stable force when it comes to delivering such positive vibes. We’ve told you about the man’s honest quest for offering the coolest yacht pop and soul vibes to the world before and you might also remember his special space-themed guestmix he produced for NOTHING BUT HOPE AND PASSION two summers ago. So, obviously, we’re beyond the moon to have the man himself back with a new exclusive NBHAP Guestmix, that happens to appear just a few weeks after he released a great new sampler called The Ladies Of Too Slow To Disco 2. Female energy is a driving force behind this joyful and summerly selection as well, so we took the chance to catch up with DJ Supermarkt to talk about this great mixtape he made for us (and you), his new sampler and the struggle of a DJ who loves to play in front of others but is forced to not do this for a longtime.

Janary 20th 2024 was a very special day for Too Slow To Disco and Dj Supermarkt, as we celebrated the 10th year of our TSTD residency at Monarch Berlin Club, and also finished the residency on the same night.

This is a live recording of 3:30 hours of peaktime smooth disco dancing turning...not so smooth.... ! 

Thanks so much to everybody who came, smiled and danced with us. We had an incredible time, but there were a few very deep emotional highlights, that brought tears in our eyes....:

and biggest of all and probably my highlight moment of the night:

The night and TSTD have always been about being a dreamer, so what a beautiful statement!
