White Horse only released one album, which wasn’t hugely successful at the time (okay, okay, maybe something of a theme here!). ‘Over and done with’ was written by Kenny Altman and Jon Lind who also played in Howdy Moon and The Fifth Avenue Band. His 70s musical projects failed to break through, so he opted instead to write songs for other performers. He co-wrote (amongst many others) humongous hits such as Earth Wind and Fire’s ‘Boogie Wonderland’ and Madonnas ‘Crazy for you’, before becoming the Head of A&R for Disney’s ‘Hollywood Records’ (bringing us Justin Timberlake, Britney, Miley…).

Micky Denne and Ken Gold only produced one album together, back in 1978. It didn’t exactly set the world alight at the time and was only ever re-released on CD in Japan (imports go for about €200), so this track might come as a bit of a world premiere to some of you. But as writers for hire they proved more successful, together writing global hits for Delegation (the almighty ‘You to me are everything’) and for Elton John. In 1999 Phats and Small sampled their track ‘Heartache No 9’ (also originally written for Delegation) which must have finally got the cash tills ringing.

Here is a little extra present for Rough Trade for making Too Slow To Disco their number one compilation of 2014. It's a mix based on a bonus disc exclusively available at the Rough Trade Shops in winter 2014. 

It is dj supermarkt's first Radio-Style-Mix after 2011’s Nite Flyte, Too Slow To Disco from 2010 and Laurel Canyon from 2009. So it comes with lots of spoken-word breaks, radio jingles and other annoying stuff in between the tracks. This time it features really obscure and forgotten artists from the late 70s and early 80s who embrace that Westcoast sound between the singer/songwriter era and 'almost disco'. 

You get LA-influenced bands from funny places like Norway, the Netherlands, two acts from sunny UK, a group that doesn’t even has a name, a guy who used to be in Jefferson Starship, a forgotten all-star session-band from LA, which released two albums on a label by one of the Beatles, a track by a band that really is only mentioned in this big thing called internet. Plus a light, phantastic, exotic ten minute disco-trip to a remote Pleasure Island. Enjoy."

We are finally back with another chapter of our trip to the westcoast of the late 70s/early 80s: This time we take a look at the "Ladies" of that era, who kick-started the female pop revolution. But we are not only presenting the big names like Carole King, Carly Simon or Rickie Lee Jones, Too Slow To Disco is once again unearthing lots of overlooked and lost gems of the 1970s LA music scene.

These pioneering songwriters were determined to navigate their career on their own terms, while fighting an industry that was only marginally less machismo-driven than the mafia (and in some cases involved characters from both worlds). Chauvinism was the mood music de rigueur in the record biz of the 60s and 70s, and the dawning of sexual liberation as often as not left women holding the baby. But battling through, these women writers and performers redefined what pop music could do, and in doing so, charted the path for the women that followed.

Franne Golde’s musical journey started with her working at the famous Chess Studios, learning from mainly black R&B/Blues musicians. After writing with Carole Bayer Sager (also on this compilation) for a while, she was discovered by legendary record producer Richard Perry. The first track she ever wrote for his company, was „Gettin’ ready for love“, which immediately became a hit for Diana Ross. Not bad for a start...! Her timeless place in music lovers’ affections has to be her co-write (with Dennis Lambert and Duane Hitchings) on „Don’t look any further“, recorded by Dennis Edwards. This track has since become one of the most frequently sampled tracks by rappers and dance acts worldwide, including Snoop Dogg, TLC, Tupac Shakur, Junior M.A.F.I.A. with Notorious B.I.G, Lauryn Hill and M People. When we chatted to her by phone, she mentioned that even now, when she tells people that she wrote that song, they are so surprised because that tracks sounds so „Black“, it is hard to believe a white woman of that infamous „Laurel Canyon“ hippy community wrote it.
The 80s were kind to Franne too. Smash hit „Nightshift“ by the Commodores was written by her, and tracks appear on the multi-million selling soundtracks of The Bodyguard, Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop 2 etc... And check the sleeve notes of big contemporary artists like Christina Aguilera, the Pussycat Dolls and you’ll find Franne... But, as so often with TSTD acts, bizarrely her three solo albums never took off! The fine sound of „Frannie“ was produced by legend Karl Richardson, also responsible fort he smooth sound of the disco-era Bee Gees. For the pop quizzers: Yes, he also produced Teri De Sario’s album.

Looks like everybody fell in love with „Mais Uma Chance“ by Santa Cruz. It is one of the standout- and most played tracks of TSTD Brasil. So now Berlin’s Jack Tennis put his magic hands on the song and delivers a striking DJ-friendly Yacht-Disco version. Edinho Santa Cruz loves the track so much, that we just had to release it officially.
Berlin producer Jack Tennis is the mastermind behind a lot of projects. He releases his own music under the name Hotlane (signed to Gomma Records) and spreads his Disco-Edits for UK’s influential Disco Label Midnight Riot (run by Yam Who!).

Martee Lebous is a recording artist, singer/songwriter from Binghamton N.Y. In 1976, while still a teenager, she recorded her debut album, “The Lady Wants To be A Star” produced by Charlie Calello, featuring a cohort of New York session royalty including David Lasley, Will Lee, The Brecker Bros., John Tropea and Jeff Mirinov. Martee today is lead singer of The Mar-Tays.

Too Slow To Disco regulars will remember Vibes4YourSoul’s name from his standout remix for L’impératrice on last years “TSTD – En France” compilation.
