Happy Pride weekend! Today is an exclusive mix from CB-R. He is a talented dub techno producer who is originally from the Bay Area, but like many, has long relocated to Brooklyn.

He recently released a track on the new 100% Silk compilation Sunset Silk and has a 4-track dub techno release called Inside Existence on S//P//A, his own label co-run by Jay Goitia. CB-R also has a release coming out soon with Brooklyn based label Cut Mistake Music.

This mix was recorded on a balmy night in Brooklyn. It starts with a nice cool down before things heat up. Enjoy!

Charlemagne Palestine’s majestic 1976 work The Golden Mean, originally performed by Palestine on two pianos, is revisited here as The Goldennn Meeenn + Sheeenn, a new collaboration between Palestine and the enigmatic musician Rrose.

Palestine and Rrose first joined forces a decade ago, when Rrose was studying at Mills College. Rrose was inspired to play Palestine’s masterwork Strumming Music in the grand wooden halls of the Mills Student Union, designed by the noted architect Julia Morgan. Rrose wrote to Palestine, inquiring about a score. Palestine answered that there was no official score, instead exuberantly inviting Rrose to study with him in Belgium, at his home.

Fast-forward to 2018: the Festival Variations in Nantes commissions Palestine to perform The Golden Mean, reworking the piece for two pianists. Palestine chose Rrose to join him in this new rendition of the work. Together, they performed The Golden Mean (reborn as “The Goldennn Meeenn + Sheeenn”) onstage at the main opera house in Nantes -- the sumptuous Théâtre Graslin – with extraordinary results.

The concept of the ‘golden mean’ goes back to the roots of mathematics, and ancient Greek philosophy. It is an important work in the Palestine mythos, embodying his total immersion in the power of the interval. “It’s probably his most systematic work . . . a step-by-step journey through the intervals of the octave,” says Rrose. “When we rehearsed it, we were noticing how each interval is like a universe of its own -- with its own history, emotions, and sonic qualities all mixed up together. Every time you move from one interval to the next, it feels like moving into another world.”

“I love the interval,” Palestine told me in a recent interview. “I love when it plays with itself. That's what I learned from organ musics too. You can just do an interval, and if they're just slightly out of tune with each other, then they shimmer . . . they play themselves. And it sounds like somebody's playing lots of notes. In your ear, it's like an aural phenomenon . . . that's my whole concept. I make something that then does itself somehow. It continues by itself. So I don't have to always be there. And that makes my music a little less egocentric. So there’s more space. Also for the listener — the ear plays with these things, and you're not always being given orders. Your ear isn't given orders all the time of what to listen for.”

Beautifully recorded, with mastering by Rashad Becker of Dubplates and Mastering, The Goldenn Meeenn + Sheeenn feels expansive, radiant and hypnotic, opening new ears to its enduring mystery.

Rrose adds this note to listeners: “Do not focus your attention on the notes being played, but on the ocean of overtones swimming, suspended, overhead, brushing against one another, kissing one another, melting into one another.”

We are pleased to present ‘Hallways’ the third full length from Austin, Texas analogue hardware enthusiast Bill Converse. Immersed in the early days of the 90s midwest rave scene, Bill began DJing at a young age in Lansing, Michigan. Luminaries such as Claude Young, Traxx, and Derrick May were key early influences. Techno, noise, ambient and tape processing are all part of his uncanny sound palette. 
‘Hallways’ is an 80 minute journey spread across 12 tracks and 2 slabs of vinyl. All tracks were recorded directly to tape with no overdubs, made at Converse's home studio over the past 2 years. Bill says, “One idea for this album is 'through bardos’,  the gap or moment of transition between two things according to Buddhism. Like an experience in meditation and attempting to find realization/s on the way through the illusory and interdependent nature of good old fashioned REALITY.”  Built around crunchy synthesizers, harsh drum machines and jarring acid lines, the tracks share a darker tone than Bill’s previous albums and one song features guest vocals by music gourmet Carlos Souffront, a true DJ's DJ from Detroit. All songs have been mastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each 2xLP is housed in a jacket designed by Eloise Leigh with rich purple and smokey turquoise kaleidoscopic patterns.

Topazu is a San Francisco-based selector. She hosted the local Infinite Beat Ambient showcase and radio show, Infinite Beat, formerly on Radio Valencia and SutroFM.

Since 2015, the show featured producers, artists and DJs that are shaping the Bay Area sound in experimental synthesis as well as celebrated romanticism, nostalgia and cinematic themes with modern day electronics.

Besides curating Infinite Beat, she has been featured DJing many local shows including; Sure Thing, Surface Tension, Honey Soundsystem and Recombinant Media Labs. With her interests in abstract textures, carnal rhythms and her exuberance in darker, chaotic noise, Topazu has also supported many international artists such as Wolfgang Voigt, Evigt Morker, Silent Servant, HTRK and Marie Davidson.

She was a featured performer for the first San Francisco edition of Mutek in 2018.
