This piece was a simple improvisation recorded in the studio. I thought it sounded like the first happy light of morning—a sunny, happy light, of course, to accompany the first thoughts of the day. It’s bright; it’s new; and it’s full of good things!

6 - David Nevue: Awake to the Light

This piece is part of A Passion Play for solo piano, which I have frequently performed live at Easter and Advent events. This selection accompanies the moment when John the Baptist sees Jesus and declares, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world!” (John 1:29). Compositionally, I think of the “lion” when the melody is played midrange and the “lamb” when the same melody is played more quietly an octave higher. The two characters weave together into one.

This piece was inspired by a glorious winter-morning walk in the Bavarian Alps. As the sun rose over the eastern peaks, it lit up the snow in sparkles. The landscape glittered with luminous, twinkling light—an otherworldly, magical moment. I felt like “David in Wonderland.” A real-life Christmas dream.

The Speyer Cathedral in Germany is a majestic marvel and the largest Romanesque church remaining standing in the world. My wife and I, while visiting, were amazed at and in awe of the architecture. While inside, agape at what we were seeing, the nave suddenly filled with angelic song. Searching for the source, we found four local schoolgirls, facing each other, singing a beautiful song in four-part harmony. Their voices, amplified by the stonework all around, filled the entire space—and could even be heard in the dungeon downstairs! We could not help but stand silently, eyes closed, and listen. That evening, I found a small keyboard and composed this piece, crafting the melody and a simple arrangement based on my memory of the moment.

My second album, While the Trees Sleep, is essentially a collection of musical poems. The songs were not inspired by specific places or events so much as wintry pictures in my mind. “Winter Twilight” was composed to reflect the last moments of twilight in the snow-covered woodlands.

During my college days, I was rather insecure about my ability to play the piano. Having initially declared as a music major, I was assigned to the music department for my work-study duties and, as such, given a key to the music building. With that key, I gained unlimited access to and spent countless hours in the practice rooms in the middle of the night. There—in the lonely quiet—I freely explored piano composition without fear of being overheard. This simple piece was among my very first compositions.
