ieces is not based on any particular set of pictures but was instead inspired by portions of several different images from early twentieth century photography. This series of character pieces plays on many of the traits found in those old black and white photos. Many are faded, dried, smeared, smudged, faint, cracked, crumbling, or even burnt, with frayed edges and portions missing. Often, the images contain motion blur, are over or under exposed, or feature unnaturally stiff subjects. Some are of peculiar and inexplicable scenes, both staged and spontaneous, that are bizarrely intriguing to the modern viewer. And yet, old photographs always seem to evoke a sense of quaint nostalgia with familiar, yet distant, imagery. Pieces toys with these characteristics, offering snap-shots and snippets in a collage of musical ideas.

At its heart, <i>Scenes from Babbitt Square</i> was written using a twelve-tone matrix from which structure and pitch content were taken. So in one sense, it is a 12-tone, serial work. But by turning this analytical tool on its side, and drawing from it tonal/centric clusters as source material, a wholly different sort of music emerges.

Combining minimalist techniques and folkish Americana the piece is almost impressionistic, hinting at various scenes. It unfolds in an almost programmatic fashion, although not a specific story is being told. Listeners have described it as “an evening stroll through a town square, looking at the different shops and people along the way,” and, “I picture myself sitting inside on a rainy day, watching people passing by the window, each with their own character and purpose.” In nearly every case, the work is described with images and movement and never with twelve-tone theoretical language.

Iowa native Tori Ovel has recently graduated with her Master's in Music Composition from Butler University in Indianapolis under the watchful eye of Dr. Michael Schelle and Dr. Frank Felice. Her music generally involves extended tertian harmonies, no doubt from her jazz band days.  She enjoys a good challenge found in writing for atypical instrumentations.
