Herbert: Monaberry’s totem old timer, Super Flu’s dear old Opa, house music’s favourite septuagenarian and all round legend returns…

It’s been a while since he last curated a Monaberry collection (his hearing aid kaput throughout 2015)The last time being summer 2014 with Monaberry’s now-vintage ’25 Years Monaberry’ collection. But now he’s dusted off his curating cap, gently leant his walking stick against the wall, shouted “what?” a lot of times, moaned about his clicky knees, yearned for the good old days and, finally, put together one of the Halle-based label’s most beautiful collections to date.
 
Fresh out of the care home, Herb’s first pick – Super Flu & Viktor Talking Machine’s ‘Plastik’ – leads with the gusto of a man a third of his age: a twinkling arpeggio gazes up to clear night skies building in momentum with the beats and a pulsating bassline. Laced with a dramatic breakdown, you’d be advised to stash this one for the next festival marathon.

The melodic tech textures continue as Herb welcomes Boston’s Robot Love to the Monaberry fold with the touching slice of anthemia that is ‘Numbers Station’. A clipped hook gently persists with chiselled insistency. Timeless and driving, Herb tells us he picked it because it’s great to walk around the supermarket really really slowly to. We love it because it will take your dancefloor to a whole new level. Last spotted on ’25 Years Monaberry’, fellow Halle hero Martin Waslewski returns with a wistful piano-primed stroller that sees Herb striding gently but confidently towards a destination unknown (probably the chemist to
get his meds). No walking stick required. Monaberry mainstays Hanne & Lore take old Herb (or Herbie to those in the know) out to the choppy tech seas late at night, sharpen up their finest synth hook and reel in a big one. Like all fresh produce, ‘Tuna In’ is crisp to the taste and will satiate the hungriest of dancefloors. Having previously remixed Super Flu, Dortmunder Philhamoniker and Philipp Armbruster’s ‘Volkwein’, Bebetta returns to Monaberry with her label debut; an ageless groove powered by soft chord changes, mild jazz
textures and faraway crackles, it’s Herbert’s favourite for fireside chats. Finally, Parra For Cuva brings us to a touching finale. Just in time for Herb’s afternoon nap, ‘Borneo’ is awash with dreamy lilts, lingering instrumentation and positive chords. All brought together by shimmering guitar strums and cosmic ripples, listen closely and you can hear Herb smoke-belching in sync with the splashing cymbals. 

Respect your elders, respect the grooves, respect one another: 2016 is about to commence and Herbie’s picked the winning soundtrack to break it in.

Since his emergence in 2010, Madben's melodic, Detroit-inspired techno evolved, with various releases on Caduceus, Astropolis Records, Off Recordings, Inflyte and Bedrock. Nowadays, the Paris-based artist remains a key figure in France's new generation of techno producers, with an upcoming debut LP on Astropolis Records.  Swinging from atmospheric sounds to techno, Madben produces an alchemy of rave anthems, hardware material and groovy, emotional music. With support from France's favourite Laurent Garnier, Manu le Malin and Rebekah Warrior, Fréquence(s) unveils his skillfull, mature universe.

12 tracks compose the album. The opening 'Space Bubbles' carries a cinematic, ethereal touch designed for dancefloor, from dusk till dawn. 'Mouvement circulaire' sets out a slow hypnotic rythm, leading to "Narcotica" and its warm melodies. 'MG's Groove', produced with master Laurent Garnier uncovers Madben's house moves, percussive beats and distorted synths. 'Reminiscence' and 'Stripes' wink at Madben's earlier melodic techno inprints, while 'Don't Lose the Beat' uses old school vocal as the LP's boiling point. Modern techno vision is underlined with tracks such as 'Tom & Tom' and 'The Struggle', both waving between UK inspirations, aerial sounds and Ben's original signature. Featuring with Manu le Malin and Rebekah Warrior, ‘Grief, Dance to Death' stands out from the rest, swaying betwixt French vocals and rave spirit, whereas the album’s last piece, ‘Lunar Park’, ends the journey with a gripping ethereal melody.

Madben - Tom & tom

'Via' is the 9th full length album by Vince Watson, returning to his House & Techno roots and delivering 12 shimmering tracks for every moment. 

Via's story began on the road. The concept came through Vince's touring between gigs by car and train in mainland Europe. He wanted a driving, deep, musical sound palette to immerse himself in between gigs and could not find any current appropriate techno album he wanted to listen to. 

So he did the next best thing...he created one. 

The album reflects the relentless movement from one gig to the next, giving insight into the artists mind whilst cooling off from one show and seeking adrenalin for the next. 

Over 12 tracks, 'Via' brings that signature deep sound that VW fans have loved since Mystical Rhythm first appeared in 1999. 

'Via' is also the first in many new projects this year from Vince Watson. 2018 see's Vince reserve his current house and techno production for his own name, however his other musical output (Electronica, Piano, Ambient, Jazzy) will be broken up into several different artists names in order to focus more in each genre. Exclusive All Is Well 'Is It (Version 1)'

Drumpoet Community is more than a record label, it's rather a platform for artists to find a home for their personally driven music and taste and express their artistic being. For more than 10 years the Zurich based Drumpoets have contributed various musical creations to the scene, have shaped the local and international nightlife and have given aspiring and well known artists the opportunity to release and develop their personally preferred tracks. The latest contribution to the label comes from All Is Well, who delivers six tracks that result in his 'Fragments EP'. For quite some weeks the EP has gained major support by scene's heavy weights, with good reason. 'Fragments' depicts diverse approaches to electronic music, includes deeper soundscapes and balances melodic elements  so precisely that the different tracks nearly work in any surrounding, in any DJ set. 'Is It (Version 1)'  is no exception. Right from the start 'Is It (Version 1)' scores with its mental synth-melodies that create a hypnotic overall vibe which does not leave any room to escape from its sound-imprisonment.

Torture the Artist is a webzine, or a magazine made for the internet, geared towards those with a passion for contemporary electronic music, with subgenres including Techno, Tech House, Deep House and Eletronica, as well as a small amount of Indie and Alternative. Founded in 2014 by Holger Breuer, a German native and lover of the arts, Torture the Artist now consists of five team members from all around the world.

In addition to publishing interviews, music reviews, DJ charts and track premieres, the webzine hosts out a  podcast series called 'art:casts'. This medium gives DJs and producers the artistic freedom to highlight their different musical styles while not being restricted by factors such as setting, and connecting them to a wider audience. 

Being in its ninth year, Torture the Artist has gained a strong and active online support group, including music enthusiasts to label managers and artists themselves, creating a cohesive community with music as their bond.
