For the fifth anniversary festivities on MATE Records label boss Rafa Santos gathered old and new companions to compile a conglomerate of ten tracks varying between House and Deep House, between past and present, between classy and classic. All Together!! Under the Ball therefore serves as a testimony of time in the label's young history. The B3 comes from Detroit-producer Gari Romalis, who contributes his track Ya No (Smuv Cruz Mix) to the compilation. The vocal "ya no" thereby runs on the repetitive deep-detroit-ish chord throughout the track giving the track, a raw and rough production itself, an almost hypnotic note as it manifests itself in the listener's mind with every beat.

Delve Deeper welcome Edmonton based producer, musician and DJ Honeydripper to the label for his debut EP - Cookie Cutter. A guitarist by trade, he has spent well over a decade heavily involved in live music, taking inspiration and experience from a diverse background in jazz, funk, and roots music. However a love for dance music and underground culture sparked the way to a solo house music project in the spring of 2017.  

Title track Cookie Cutter combines live funk bass licks and deep vocal hooks with detuned analogue synth stabs and rolling sub bass to produce a peak-time Deep House groover full of energy and ready for the dancefloor.

Dusty Beats provides a huge kick drum and more rolling sub bass to create a deep and thumping track highlighted by haunting vocals and staccato bleeps which all come together to create an atmospheric yet thumping track.

Davide Squillace’s This And That Lab welcomes back the Italoboyz whose two original tracks on this EP are made in collaboration with Blind Minded, and come complimented with a remix by Matteo Spedicati. Also on the EP is a track by Marco Donato, who is one half of the Italoboyz’ working under his solo alias Durant.

Originally from Italy but currently residing between London and Berlin, the Italoboyz are a duo consisting of the aforementioned Marco Donato and Federico Marton, whose clued-up house and techno sounds have brought them to esteemed labels such as Moon Harbour, Saved Records, Get Physical, Crosstown Rebels and their own label Superfiction Recordings.

Blind Minded, alongside solo releases on Jambutek Recordings, Natural Rhythm and Trapez Ltd has previously collaborated with the Italoboyz, compiling EP's for Oblack Label and Deeperfect among others.

Providing the solo remix, Matteo Spedicati dropped an EP on This And That in 2018, and also a collaboration with Frank Storm as part of VA. This time working on his own, other labels to have also featured his music include Hot Creations, Amam and Great Stuff Recordings.

“Back To Paradise” is first up. Focused around a tropical guitar riff, it’s also wrapped in stripped back percussion with flickers of delay and building effects. Sensual and hypnotic, this understated cut has a sophistication that many will find appealing.

Matteo Spedicati provides the second track with his remix of "Back To Paradise" that draws attention to the drums. Using the guitar as more of an ambient texture, this version has a chunky groove that’s tailored for plays on a club sound system.

“Melodia di Sogni nel Vento”, produced in tandem with hang instrument percussionist Paolo Borghi, is a track that’s all about subtlety, with each change small but timed to perfection. The steel drums that flow freely are almost cinematic, and the expertly sequenced percussion compliments them perfectly.

Closing the EP is the trippy vocals and wonky bassline of Durant’s “Ska!”, which also has filtered chord chops played on a guitar in the style commonly associated with Ska music, and has been appropriately titled to show this fusing of genres. Warped and brimming with individuality, the murky atmosphere of this minimal cut - a solo contribution from Marco under his Durant alias - showcases everything the Italoboyz are known for.

These excellent Joseph Ashworth (life & Death) tracks landed magically in my inbox one day and I had the good sense to hit reply and say “yes please!” An inspired bit of A&R work I'm sure you’ll agree. 

"ReRoute" stirs the senses in all the right ways, striking the perfect balance between wistful melody and rhythmic vigour while "Be Something" gives us a more pensive take that keeps the tension building with poise and panache. 

I reached out to Molly after hearing her tracks on Giegling and Dial and was very pleased when she sent me over these tracks. “Mr Ro Land” has that timeless rolling deep house sound that never goes out of style while “You Shine” plunges murkier, more mysterious depths and reconfigures the brain waves in a most satisfactory manner. 

Anyway, Keep washing your hands and try not to loose your mind out there! These are mad times I tell you, mad!

Torture the Artist is a webzine, or a magazine made for the internet, geared towards those with a passion for contemporary electronic music, with subgenres including Techno, Tech House, Deep House and Eletronica, as well as a small amount of Indie and Alternative. Founded in 2014 by Holger Breuer, a German native and lover of the arts, Torture the Artist now consists of five team members from all around the world.

In addition to publishing interviews, music reviews, DJ charts and track premieres, the webzine hosts out a  podcast series called 'art:casts'.
