Making a return to Rawax is the ever-impressive Jordan GCZ, bringing his four-track 'Polyphonic Glide EP' to the imprint, after 2023's "Dizzy Dizzy Dizzy" 12". This adds to over a decade's worth of real quality output from Jordan, whose catalogue is wonderfully creative and a joy to dip into.

The title track opens up the release, a fantastically deep, shimmering electronic workout, beautifully layered sounds creating complete warmth from the speakers. Shuffling hats melt into the low pads, synths add some musicality and vibe as the track develops, all the while retaining the low undercurrent, keeping this supremely deep. A faultless opener of pure quality.

The A2 cut, "Why So Serious", brings in some punchy marching drums, the reverb on the snare sounding lush and mixing perfectly with the gradual build of the pads. Nifty little synth hits work their way into the track, nestling alongside the bass and the pads, with a break 2/3 through, allowing the track to return to its original early vibe. This is a very subtly crafted track, again it's extra-deep, but the percussion allows this to also be a direct dancefloor gem too.

Flipping the 12" over, we're greeted with "Sunny Side Up", all swaggering bass and clicky percussive elements which remain pulsating, as a flickering synth line meanders into the vibe. Around two-thirds of the way into the track, a short break leads into some excellent chords and synth vibes, really lifting the track and adding yet more heat, as if it didn't have enough already. Head-swimmingly trippy, this is a glorious slice of heads-down deepness which, as with the two previous tracks, has a full punch in the low-end vibes to do serious damage on the dancefloor.    

As if this EP wasn't deep enough already, the B2 outing, "Undercurrent", heads even further into subterranean waters. The kick is sat back in the mix, the bassline carries the flow of the track, while delayed swirling pads, whistling synth sounds and bleepy FX all float around the top end of the track, making up for the absence of any main hats or percussion. Definitely something for the more creative DJ, one to use in warm-up sets or very very late 7am sessions, this is a gorgeous closing track to what is a perfectly produced and expertly deep slice of vinyl.

Detroit-born artist Lauren Flax gracefully aligns with the esteemed Chiwax label, heralding her inaugural offering steeped in homage to her native city, resonating profoundly with its essence. This momentous occasion marks yet another pinnacle in Flax's illustrious career, punctuated by an impressive discography showcased across revered imprints like Balkan Vinyl, Dance Trax, The Bunker New York, and Super Rhythm Trax, among others. Enhanced by a masterful remix courtesy of the adept Lis Sarocca, this release epitomizes unparalleled excellence.

The EP is launched with “Jack The Haus“ which, as the title leaves you in no doubt, is a late 80s referencing jack track. Utilising a similar repetitive “House" vocal refrain to Housemasterboyz “House Nation", this rattles along on a percussive bed, clicking rimshots and off-beat claps giving the drums that authentic old vibe, squelchy bass adding to the retro flavour and top notes of bleepy riffs and seering pads finalising the raw feeling. No messing about here, just aimed straight at your hips, which will start to move, as they are defenceless!

Second on the list is “The Cheeky Whistle Song“, which notches the BPM up a touch and again takes its cue from the sounds of the late 80s/early 90s house vibes. As with the opening track, the bassline is rough and ready, bouncing up next to the punchy drums, these are accompanied by some ravey bleeps and pianos as the track bumps along. Flowing through the track is a freaky whistle sound which comes in and out of the groove, adding a slightly off-kilter feeling which works really nicely. 

The title track, “D-Troit“ is next up, with modulated riffs working alongside neat acid lines, these give way to some stripped-back stabs and synth hits, all very tidy indeed. A mid-track square bassline adds to the flow, giving the track an alternate feel from its start, which is a very cool touch and allows the original sounds to then return later. This is, as with the previous tracks, unadulterated and raw club material for the floors, no doubt about that!

Lastly, Barcelona-based Lis Sarocca, no stranger to the Chiwax imprint, adds a warmer hazy flow on her remix of “D-Troit“, adding to the original's vibe with some very tasty breaks and lush filtered synths. These sit just right with the hints of acid and clipped vox from the original, retaining the overall feeling from Lauren's version but adding her own definite touches, and wrapping up this EP in fine style. Anybody wanting new vibes but with a definite nod to the late 80s and early 90s House sound, you'll not go wrong here.

Torture the Artist is a webzine, or a magazine made for the internet, geared towards those with a passion for contemporary electronic music, with subgenres including Techno, Tech House, Deep House and Eletronica, as well as a small amount of Indie and Alternative. Founded in 2014 by Holger Breuer, a German native and lover of the arts, Torture the Artist now consists of five team members from all around the world.
