Exclusive: Harry Wills - Longbags

Spaghetti Club kickstarts 2022 with a various artist four tracker that covers several moods to spoil the dance floor at the right time. With tracks from label head Pierre Codarn, Philipp Boss, Jealous Lover and Harry Wills, the V/A is musically as diverse as it can still remaining true to one vibe that can be found in each of the tracks. Starting things with a bang, it’s Harry Wills track Longbags that is to be found on the A1. The artist’s almost trademark heavy bass line is enriched with partly electro-sounding accentuated chords that hit as strong as the before mentioned sub frequencies and therefore not only carrying the listeners over the floor but most likely tie them right onto it. 

Spaghetti Club’s third installment was released on March 2nd, 2022.

Exclusive: N-Gynn - Renaissance 

Co-label founder N-Gynn is up next on the vinyl-only label Superlux Records and delivers four bass-heavy cuts that come in as smooth and energetic as possible and therefore are summed up under the suitable EP title The Heavens. For the A1, Renaissance, everything mentioned before applies: a powerful bass line features filtered claps, pads with a darker twist and note as well as hints of a wobbling bass and an Acid-line. The last detail is the implementation of spoken words in the track's middle-part adding another facet to it and emphasizing its darker tone.

N-Gynn's EP The Heavens was released on Superlux Records on May 6th, 2022.

As a displaced Mancunian currently holed up in a sedate corner of the South West, as resident jock at Bath's Origins night, Stack Effect has been road testing unreleased material on receptive dancefloors for the last 6 + months.

Showtime now beckons, and three tracks here combine sharp broken beats / breaks, incisive riffs and drifting pads. The pitched up, disembodied vocals manage to inject fragments of warmth and soul, the basslines, from dark n' buzzing to deep n dubby, hold things together via servings of cohesive electronic funk.

The one remix comes from Berlin dons Hard Ton, who take Could It Be You for a little journey around a sweaty, tripped out Italo - meets - proto house basement, before emerging blinking into the spring dawn.

Robin Flux is a German DJ/Producer, Artist and Dancer based in Copenhagen. Having always been fascinated by the early era of house music and underground dance culture of the 80s and 90s in the US, he reflects his love and appreciation for house culture in his productions and DJ sets while interweaving influences from Disco, Garage, Breakbeat and Techno. After years of DJing and curating events dedicated to house culture in Germany’s vibrant underground scenes, he has been eager to explore and connect with music, dance, and art scenes elsewhere in the world, playing a series of gigs in Southeast Asia, Europe and lately in New York, while releasing regularly on international record labels such as Miura Records.

Long-time affiliate of the Freund Der Familie imprint Achim Maerz returns to the label with his latest album ‘Relief’, comprised of nine originals from the Hamburg-based artist.

Over the past decade Achim Maerz has been releasing his twist on dub, downtempo, techno and leftfield electronica via the likes of Semtek’s Don’t Be Afraid, Mark Rhein and Benjamin Brunn’s Wake Up! Records, Solar Phenomena and of course Freund Der Familie where he returns here with his latest collection of work.

Across the nine-track ‘Relief’ LP Achim Maerz displays the depth of influences in his music, from the cinematic electronica contributions like opener ‘Gondolier’, ‘Dream’ and ‘Memories’ through to more classic deep, dubby techno style cuts like ‘Black Hole’, ‘Changing Weather’, ‘Open Sky and ‘On The Way’.

Maerz also explores more experimental aesthetics via the intricately syncopated rhythms and dynamic synth work on tracks like title-cut ‘Relief’ and closing composition ‘Odysee’.

Exclusive: Adria, Pau Roses - Ciutat Bella (Arnau Obiols Acid Mix)

Adrià & Pau Rosés launch their label Cupula with the release of their fiver tracker Ciutat Bella, which contains three original tracks and two remixes. For the label debut the two also team up with Vince Void on the A3 Paral-lel and Quim on the A2, Gueto de Gracia to create some partly organ infused and slightly Acid-ish influenced takes that are designed for the floors, basically the place where Cupula was born since the Barcelona collective is known for their events (throughout the city). The B1, Arnau Obiols Acid Mix of the title track Ciutat Bella focuses on what the track title already suggests: a lovely dose of Acid bleeps. But if you think Arnau, who's had releases on Ibadan or Compost in the past, only adds an Acid-ish note to the original, is plain wrong. Arnau's approach goes further, implementing the hook synth-line and combining it with the before mentioned bleeps create dreamy as well as dancey moments at the same time in his remix and make the retreatment of the original a stand-alone track that's meant to take listeners and dancers to different spheres.

Marseilles's tech-wizard Magic Doz launches his label Luzerna Records with a double vinyl from Dynasty of Dreams, who tells a Native American adventure between a Cowboy and The Cherokees princess in ten chapters with his musical novel A Wild West Story. With influences from Breaks, a highly doze of percussions, catchy pads as well as the adding of instruments like the guitar or the piano the LP creates a vintage yet authentic feel that takes the listener deeper into its story with each track being played and adding up. the C1 or Animals And Spirit Of The Forest has a progressive tone deriving from its lush bass line and the 90s appearing synth-line and pads. A short piano-intermezzo as well as little breaks express the diversity of creatures in the forest while the before mentioned note gives the track an almost ambivalent spirit. On the one side and due to the inter-harmonic synergy of elements and instruments a rather calm feel but on the other side a rather pushy and dance floor-oriented touch based upon the proggy bass line.

Torture the Artist is a webzine, or a magazine made for the internet, geared towards those with a passion for contemporary electronic music, with subgenres including Techno, Tech House, Deep House and Eletronica, as well as a small amount of Indie and Alternative. Founded in 2014 by Holger Breuer, a German native and lover of the arts, Torture the Artist now consists of five team members from all around the world.

In addition to publishing interviews, music reviews, DJ charts and track premieres, the webzine hosts out a  podcast series called 'art:casts'. This medium gives DJs and producers the artistic freedom to highlight their different musical styles while not being restricted by factors such as setting, and connecting them to a wider audience. 

Being in its ninth year, Torture the Artist has gained a strong and active online support group, including music enthusiasts to label managers and artists themselves, creating a cohesive community with music as their bond.
