Exclusive: Star_Dub - Voodub_5

Making a welcome return to the DUBWAX/ RAWAX label is Matt Star, aka Star_Dub, delving further into his bass-heavy sonic explorations after 2021's initial Voodub EP.

As with the first EP, this second offering simply has numbered track titles, following tracks 1-4 on the first 12". So let's start at Voodub_5! As you'd expect, there is a sumptuous amount of delay-laden warmth on the track, but there's much more too. The beats are crisp, the synths are fizzing with energy, the percussion has a lovely clubby swing especially in the latter stages of the track. The FX sounds which run through the track give an underwater vibe to some of the sounds, which creates a supremely tripped-out added flow. A superb opening track to set the scene. 

Voodub_6 is a much deeper affair altogether, the emphasis very heavily shifted to the classic dub flavours. The kicks and bass are amazingly low, there is almost no to-end percussion to speak of and what there is sits very carefully low-down in the mix. The stabs and FX all have a beautifully layered presence, complimenting the other sounds by keeping high in the mix, almost drifting above the kicks and bass. This is truly excellent in every way and a brilliant example of how to produce dub grooves. 

Opening the B-side is Voodub_7, which is ultimately a dum-led groove, the delays working on the percussive sounds, a low stabby bass hitting every few beats and some gorgeous pads floating in and out of the track. The beats have a rattling sound which is excellent, as this carries the track along, despite it only seemingly being made up of several component parts. Another spot-on heads-down vibe for the discerning dancefloor. 

For Voodub_8 the vibe leans into slightly eerie territory, as the light synth sounds and keys seem to move into an off-centre sound, with the kicks and toms subtly rolling underneath. The keys have something of an old children's 'music box' resonance, perhaps explaining the eerie vibe, which is no bad thing at all. Very definitely the deepest track on the EP, it's yet another showcase of club-ready but immensely layered house music, with its cap doffed to the production styles of Jamaican dub legends. This is an absolutely brilliant EP, as it has warm-up, mid-set and main-set grooves, so any DJ worth their salt should get this in their collection.

microCastle begins the fall season by welcoming Olaf Stuut to the label for his debut artist showcase. Based in Amsterdam, the Dutch producer has been a fixture of the electronic underground for over a decade. Uniquely transcendent, Olaf's music is hugely anticipated by his fans and highly regarded by his contemporaries, leading him to remix some of electronic music's most revered artists, namely Max Cooper, Minilogue and The Acid, while also landing him releases on the world's trendiest records labels, most notably Connected Frontline, Engrave, Infectious (PIAS), Last Night On Earth and Atomnation, the latter of which operates as his primary home. Now following a remix for Christian Löffler's Ki Records, Olaf makes his microCastle debut with 'Coral Limbo'.

Exclusive Olaf Stuut 'Coral Limbo'

It's been a moment since Olaf Stuut released an EP. But as autumn is coming closer it's time to tackle that matter for the Amsterdamer and pull off a four tracker on microCastle that literary takes one back to the summer of 2019 while it musically draws the listener to the dance floor. 'Coral Limbo', Olaf's up-to-date work and debut on the label, captures the artist's preference for Funk and Jazz, at least or mainly when 'jamming' to the driving bass line only. Stuut manages to combine the extremely affecting sub-frequencies with smooth mid- and high-frequencies, which he keeps rather dubby and therefore gains an aqua-esque vibe as if one dives way further than only in a track but into brain of the ocean.

Olaf Stuut's EP 'Coral Limbo' will be released on microCastle on October 4th, 2019.

Torture the Artist - your source for contemporary electronic music

Torture the Artist is a webzine, or a magazine made for the internet, geared towards those with a passion for contemporary electronic music, with subgenres including Techno, Tech House, Deep House and Eletronica, as well as a small amount of Indie and Alternative. Founded in 2014 by Holger Breuer, a German native and lover of the arts, Torture the Artist now consists of five team members from all around the world.

In addition to publishing interviews, music reviews, DJ charts and track premieres, the webzine hosts out a  podcast series called 'art:casts'. This medium gives DJs and producers the artistic freedom to highlight their different musical styles while not being restricted by factors such as setting, and connecting them to a wider audience. 

Being in its ninth year, Torture the Artist has gained a strong and active online support group, including music enthusiasts to label managers and artists themselves, creating a cohesive community with music as their bond.
