@orpheuthewizard is one of the many jewels in the Amsterdam scene, as well as being a regular with us here at Dekmantel. He's one of those DJs who was born for the backroom, a place where his curveballs and oddities make for subversive soundtracks that span sounds and scenes from across the decades. For that reason, he is an ever-popular guest on stations like NTS and can either cast you adrift in the cosmos or lock you in with a cold wave beat. 

He's in a club-ready mood on this week's mix and it's one that proves exactly why they call him Orpheu The Wizard: it's a journeying selection of intergalactic tracks that bang and bounce in many different ways. There are nostalgic retro-future workouts mixed into brain-boggling trance-techno cuts, rave bombs and bright progressive classics all upping the energy levels and leading to your eventual take-off. Strap in!

Dekmantel Podcast 393 - Orpheu The Wizard

Ambient synths, a deep bassline and trickling plucks form ‘The Prelude’, this is the introduction to an LP oozing character, told by Allergy Season and Heist artist John Barera & Beats In Space and Haus of Altr affiliate Brian Abelson. 

This is a varied album, touching on groove-laden dance tracks like ‘I Was There’ and ‘I Am Free’, to the sluggish trip of ‘I Believe’. Summarising the LP perfectly, ‘The Return’ closes out the release with the infectious strum of a bass guitar and carefully designed layers of melody that, much like the rest of the full-length, speaks endlessly to the imagination.

Once dubbed one of the “New York techno scene’s hardest working DJs” by Resident Advisor, John Barera has honed his craft via his Cross Street label, as well as appearances on labels such as Soul Clap and Dolly. His style ranges from techno, electro through to house and acid, and has seen him grace the halls of influential international clubs like Panorama Bar, Fabric, Razzmatazz, and many more.

Brian Abelson is responsible for co-producing and writing records on labels like Beats in Space, Haus of Altr, Sinderlyn and more, all while holding down a residency at New York’s celebrated Bossa Nova Civic Club. After a recent glimpse at collaboration via their 2022 ‘Myrtle Ave Wetlands’ on Sorry Records, NYC scene stalwarts Abelson and Barera now team up for an LP rooted in left-field house music, combining their wealth of influences and experience to deliver a quality vinyl album full of unique artistic expression.

'toucan sounds welcomes Felipe Gordon for ‘The Warehouse Beast’, a timeless house record and a tripped-out remix from Chicago mainstay Glenn Underground.

Felipe Gordon’s low-slung and funky title track 'The Warehouse Beast' kicks off with deep drums and playful chords. It's a nice loose-limbed cut infused with jazzy melodies and muffled vocals that spread warmth. It's an irresistible groove that shows off Gordon's ability to tap into truly emotive feelings. His brilliant 'It's Over (Drive My Car)' picks up the pace but stays low and deep, its smeared chords like rays of fading sun while its elastic bassline roams free down low.

Glenn Underground is a house pioneer. His jazzy style and complex grooves have defined a uniquely deep and musical take on the genre over the last 25+ years. He remixes 'The Warehouse Beast' with his usual style - dreamy and cosmic chords, atmospheric samples and an introspective mood that is full of beauty.

Felipe Gordon is a producer, multi-instrumentalist, DJ and label head who recently founded Wide Awake. He fuses everything from jazz motifs to lush piano and acid bass into his house cuts on the likes of Shall Not Fade, Toy Tonics, Clone Royal Oak and Razor-N-Tape..

Dee Diggs’ ‘Go Deep’ on toucan sounds follows up her production debut on the label released last year. It’s another insightful evolution of her musical world, featuring a dynamic house groove with a warm, thick bassline and lyrics that conjure a devotional mood that transforms into a hopeful feeling.

The soulful vocals in Dee Diggs’ ‘Go Deep’ are breathy, intimate and direct, bright shimmering high hats add extra lightness, and the subtly broken kick pattern keeps things moving as piano chords douse the track with an authentic yet subtle gospel influence. It is a standout cut that bridges worlds, its modern progressive house at a patient bpm of 126, revealing the dexterity of Dee Diggs’ sonic pallet and production style. This track is a nice contrast from her upbeat and sultry yet similarly jazz-laden debut solo single ‘Toss It’ on the New York label last summer.
