When a long-term relationship comes to an end, there is almost inevitably a lot of bitterness, anger, upset and regret.  But as time moves along, in my experience at least, these are replaced by a gratitude that you were able to share precious moments with your partner and remember the everyday things that you will always treasure.

Last year, Terry and myself fell into a conversation about my marriage break-up - some eight years ago now - and for some reason I started to share with him all of the little things that made being with my ex-partner so special.  They weren’t earth shattering, just times when we did something ordinary, like cooking a really nice meal together or watching a movie we’d seen many times before and knew we would enjoy.

Sometimes, I’d lay in her lap as we watched.  She’d gently stroke my head and very often I’d fall into the deepest, most relaxing of sleeps.  All the cares of the outside world just drifted away, until it felt as as if we were the only two people in the world.  I’ve never known a feeling like it.  It was sheer and utter heaven.

When we split, she tried to make me understand that it was the right and proper thing to do and, although I went through all of the negative emotions described above, she was absolutely right.  The good times had gone and they were never coming back. That’s just the way life is sometimes.  

So this is the song that Tel wrote about the things I told him.  A sad song yes but tinged with the warm glow of great times shared.  It really is better to have loved and lost...

As always, with Tel’s wonderfully apposite lyrics to guide him, Hans understood exactly what the song was all about and the arrangement he put together sums up my feelings so much better than the words I’ve used here to describe them. This is the 4th song posted from the album I started using demo tracks given to me by Wou-Wou & the Wormling during the start of the pandemic when I had extra time due to society closing down. This song was inspired by Black Lives Matter and my own experiences with the police growing up in the California East Bay Area in the 80s. 

It has been an incredible opportunity working with Wou-Wou, Stricknice, and Bitzone on this album. I feel like we have a realized sound and vision for the overall style of the album. It is exciting to know that we have many more tracks ready to be released.

Hello. Hope you’re all relatively okay, especially now in the world. I see I am in a winter lull musically. My focus is drawn away by bitter cold weather from a recent polar vortex and also, by what is happening in the world right now. Earlier in the week, it was -22F (-30C) one night. That’s fairly cold for the end of February. With the cold, there came a fair amount of snow and strong winds. I found myself outside shoveling snow and enjoying the balmy -10 temps. As I was shoveling, I noticed 3 deer beds in the fresh snow by the aspens, a short distance from the compost pile. When I finally shoveled back to the compost pile, I saw the deer had feasted on some old garden squash I had recently composted. Apparently deer like squash. Good to know, as there is only so much squash an old man like me can eat. Last night I tossed some smaller garden carrots back there for the deer and rabbits. By the time I got back inside my beard had already frozen. Anyway, this song is my way to work through some shit about my family, and by extension the world right now. Guess I am not a happy camper at the moment. For the most part all of the lyrics are ‘true’, but they are also painted by a Zeitgeist of how I saw things go down. The song is also a vehicle of catharsis, as I work to render out the last vestiges of resentment I may still have toward all this happy horseshit. (I laughed while recording this.) I can only hope the world finds its sanity, as I have given up hope for my family ever finding theirs… Thank you for dropping by.
