Autumns Meets Post-Punkers Uptown.

A couple of years after the Dyslexia Tracks EP, and following a volley of killer releases on labels such as iDEAL, Death & Leisure and Opal Tapes, Autumns returns to Touch Sensitive with perhaps his most complete set to date.

Pitching down the BPM but maintaining the intensity of his recent recorded output and incendiary live shows, Dyslexia Sound System sees Christian Donaghey turn the edit on himself with a grip of eight dub-wave zingers.

Pulling from his love of On-U Sound, The Pop Group, and Public Image Limited, Dyslexia Sound System perfectly fuses dubbed-out dynamics with the tough and unrelenting electronics that has become Autumns' signature sound. Guitars squall, clarinets skronk, vocals echo, roto-toms repeat and - as always with Autumns - rhythm is king.

Dyslexia Sound System is the sickest handbrake turn in Autumns' relentless and wired journey to date.

Black String is founded on Korean traditional music but guided by universal emotions, freely crossing generic borders while actively working to create a new level of improvisational performance. They present a repertory which is both contemporary and filled with Black String’s distinctive aesthetic. Led by master geomungo (traditional Korean six-string zither) player Yoon Jeong HEO, the band is further made up of guitarist Jean OH , daegeum (traditional Korean flute) and yanggeum (hammered dulcimer) player Aram LEE, and percussionist and vocalist Min Wang HWANG. Black String was selected for the 2016 World Music Expo Official Showcase, and was the first Korean band to win the Asia & Pacific Award from renowned world music magazine Songlines in 2018, demonstrating the excellence and artistic potential of traditional Korean music to the world. Following on from an invitational tour at a series of prestigious international festivals, Black String was the first Asian band to sign with ACT, Europe’s largest jazz label, so far releasing two studio albums, Mask Dance (2016) and Karma (2019), as well as a live album, Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic (2020).

Hot on the heels of this year’s ‘Dyslexia Sound System’ album, Touch Sensitive is thrilled to share a three-track companion piece from Autumns - 'DSS Dubplate'.

Autumns is the solo project of Derry’s Christian Donaghey. With a relentless release rate that mirrors the energy and intensity of his live shows, Donaghey has submitted a selection of skewed star turns for the likes of iDEAL, Death & Leisure, and Opal Tapes since his debut on Regis' Downwards label in 2014.

Much like it's companion LP, 'DSS Dubplate' is heavily inspired by the On-U Sound label, the productions of Adrian Sherwood, and that cultural and musical sweet spot when the rockers met the post-punk crowd. 

Donaghey’s whip-crack beats, heavily effected vocals, shredded no-wave guitar, and clarinet squalls are shaped and shifted further into the endless expanse by his dubwise techniques on the board. 

As always with Donaghey's productions - these rhythms grip tight and don't let loose until the needle is on the run-out groove.

Autumns - Annoying Fucker [Touch Sensitive]

The rain came down harder than ever before today, it left thick streaks down the windows that obscured the outside world. It seemed to mirror her mood; no matter how much she tried, she couldn't read him at all - his mouth said one thing but his eyes said something completely different. Unbeknownst to him she'd already been putting their relationship to the test, and as it stood he wasn't set to pass with flying colours. 

Cork-based singer and musician Elaine Howley has made a name for herself in Ireland's underground music scene as part of several groups, Crevice, Howlbux and The Altered Hours. As a solo artist her work is intimate and personal, weaving together dusty, textural motifs and lo-fi ditties that suck you into her sonic world. Her newest LP, The Distance Between Heart and Mouth, takes a diaristic form. Recorded on a four-track cassette machine during 2019 and 2020, the nine tracks are guided by Elaine's distant, wistful vocals which sit on a bed of sounds that touch on dub, alt-pop, soul, chanson and psychedelic folk, reminiscent of artists like Broadcast, Leslie Winer and Tirzah.

Glacial Industries returns for 2019 with a club focused 12” from Cork born, Berlin based composer ELLLL.

ELLLL follows up outings on Art For Blind and First Second Label with “CONFECTIONARY”, a trio of technoid mutations. “PEPSI” + “SKITTLES” provide club ammo with their pulsing hard drums, whilst the eerie, off-kilter “JAWBREAKER” rounds off the release.

Max de Wardener returns to Village Green with an album of detuned acoustic piano pieces, performed by British jazz pianist Kit Downes (ECM).

Drawing inspiration from modernist composers James Tenney, Harry Partch and La Monte Young, de Wardener’s intentions here were “to try and bend something established and monumental into something new”. 

The resulting album is deceptively simple, belying the project’s myriad technical challenges, (pianos are immensely stubborn when subject to unorthodox tuning methods). Captured over a two year period, Downes’ enlivening improvisations do justice to de Wardener’s vision in creating an elegant record that feels at once familiar, yet otherworldly.

Following on from 2018’s ‘Sentience and Sapience’ under his Ai Messiah alias, Connor Dougan returns to Touch Sensitive with a deeply personal and arresting nine-track album - Deathbed Convert’s ‘Debris of Echoes’.

Dougan has been a long-standing fixture of the Irish electronic underground - he was a founding member of the cult club night & future-funk ensemble RESET (featuring Kaidi Tatham), both solo and collaborative works have graced Boxcutter’s Kinnego label, and recently - the Ai Messiah project has morphed in to an immersive live audio/visual collaboration.

Despite an inclination towards futuristic sonics and group work, ‘Debris of Echoes’ reverts back to solo composition - creating a truly singular vision. “This record grew quite organically out of me probably not playing with other musicians enough and trying to form something out of my introverted guitar experiments instead.”

Alongside the more personal aspect of playing and recording alone, ‘Debris of Echoes’ is rooted in an emotional connection to the rural Irish landscape of home. “I took a lot of inspiration from old photographs, the bleakness and beauty of the countryside, old graveyards and ruined churches”

Juxtaposed with Ai Messiah’s subjective speculations on the future - the escapism of ’Debris of Echoes’ can be found in subjective impressions of the past.
A connection with the mid-nineteenth century photography of Hill & Adamson (whose work features on the sleeve) resonated heavily and further shaped the record. “They have an artificiality to them - a deliberately exaggerated pastoral sense - that makes them very romantic and alluring”.

Masters such as Alice Coltrane, Miles Davis, Pharaoh Sanders, and Talk Talk are mentioned as ever present influences. ‘Debris of Echoes’ may be removed from the sonic aesthetic of that quartet but we feel the spirit. Musically - with sparse, repetitive guitar tones paired with effected, minimal keys and hypnotic field recordings - connections can be made with the melancholic beauty of The Durutti Column, Gigi Masin’s deep, ambient ocean, and Iasos’ endless expanse.

Dwelling on themes of home, ancestry and belonging that have rarely felt more relevant, 'Debris of Echoes' is one of the most affecting albums we’ve had the pleasure to release.
