So thought provoking Meredith! Reminds me of a lot of moments I had in Malawi. Particularly realizing that the role of Westerners has been a waste in so many ways. Acknowledging that, trying to understand my place in that, feeling that I can do nothing. Such a necessary thing to realize and although it scared me it allowed me to break out of the "white saviour" mindset and move beyond that into REAL community. Westerners are not superior beings who are needed for development, but we are brothers and sisters in a global who can all learn from each other. I stopped looking at my time in Malawi as my way of "helping the poor" and as a way of reciprocal learning. I learned and I taught, I was blessed and I blessed. So glad to see you on this journey of thought... I'm right there with you!
