‘Be Someone’ is the first single to be taken from Dam-based don Retromigration’s debut album. Fourteen expertly executed tracks that range from hazy beats and jazz-tinged broken rhythms to club-ready groovers, deep excursions, soulful footwork and even some jungle energy. A flavour for every occasion and damn it tastes good.

With an envious run of releases on the likes of Handy, Healthy Scratch, wewillalwaysbealovesong and WOLF in a relatively short space – Retormigration is a hot property and it’s clear to see why. We are confident this album will be his breakthrough release, solidifying his status on the scene. There is already that tell-tale ripple of anticipation that lets you know the audience is primed, and with the quality of this album, it’s only a matter of time.

‘Be Someone’ features Bezzix and here the duo masterfully blend shuffling, latin percussion, strings, sax, piano, double bass and vocals. It’s a soulful, jazzy, melodic blend of the organic and electronic, culminating in an off-kilter deep house jam, full of Retromigration's trademark swagger. Fans of Masters At Work, Kerri Chandler, Ron Trent, et al will be into this one.

Retromigration - Be Someone Ft Bezzix & Mauricesax

On his previous releases, including last year's fine 'Cafe Society' EP on Ukrainian imprint Arteform, @thierrytomas has showcased a sound that cannily combines elements of both deep house and tech-house. On 'Tomat', his first full EP for Moscow-based Minor Notes Recordings, Thomas ditches the tech-house influences in favour of a delicious deep, dusty and warming take on deep house. It's a good move, because opener 'August' is simply sublime, with sampled jazz horns, twinkling piano motifs and luscious chords rising above a shuffling jazz-house rhythm and a lovely bassline. The Russian producer then switches to bumpin', loop-based disco-house thrills ('Signor Promidor') and loose-limbed, funk-sampling, shoulder-swinging brilliance ('Shaking'), before rounding things off via the spy chase-friendly jazz-house bump of 'Double Bass'.

Toy Tonics welcome one of the US’ absolute legends in the game on their roster - Kai Alcé!  One of the original masters of jazzy house, Kai is a prime example of someone who witnessed the genesis of Detroit’s electronic musical landscape and strives to keep that spirit alive. Being of Haitian descent laid the foundation for his musical ear, starting with his childhood in Queens, New York. Some of his earliest musical influences included his mother’s penchant for soca music and the distinct Caribbean rhythms of his culture. An appreciation of Jazz would be further guided by his father’s expanding audiophile home system. During the 1970s the kindling of Hip Hop and the heyday of Disco perked the ear of a young Kai while they were living in NYC. The Big Apple would remain a constant throughout his musical journey as the years went on, but it was the move to Michigan that ultimately shaped his artistic vision.

On this 5 track EP Kai once again makes it all feel so easy! Deeply musical, yet also instantly effective on the dance floor, tracks like ‘New Life Livin’ and ‘Slide It In’ come with an ease that shows why he’s shaped the game for decades.
