What do you do when you’ve just released an amazing album and your last EP on Heist was one of the label’s best selling records in recent years? This is the ‘question’ Crackazat had to answer when writing his new EP for Heist.  His solution was to deliver something even more amazing!  When Crackazat released his ‘Alfa’ EP early 2021, we knew it was going to be a great record. It had everything we’ve come to expect and love from him; a great balance between creative musicality and downright beef for the club. Fast forward a year and a half and here we are, super happy to release his new ‘Demucha EP’.

‘Demucha’ starts with the jazzy energy of a double bass, brushed percussion, and vocal chops. You can feel the speed working through every part of the song, which is even more evident when the main key comes in.  A typical Crackazat-esque finger-twirling loop brings the track to its top speed where horn stabs add to the overall excitement. ‘Sarge’ takes a more mellow approach, Crackazat navigates the idea of timelessness with dreamy keys, strings and a dubby bass. A mid track crackly arpeggio and faraway voices add to the contemplative vibe to great effect.  ‘We know’ stays away from Crackazat’s renowned skippy beats and instead, makes way for a driving staccato stomp. Rough key stabs along with the talented multi-instrumentalist’s own faraway vocals make for a mesmerizing cut that takes you on a sonic journey that works as well on the dancefloor as in any other space.

On his previous releases, including last year's fine 'Cafe Society' EP on Ukrainian imprint Arteform, @thierrytomas has showcased a sound that cannily combines elements of both deep house and tech-house. On 'Tomat', his first full EP for Moscow-based Minor Notes Recordings, Thomas ditches the tech-house influences in favour of a delicious deep, dusty and warming take on deep house. It's a good move, because opener 'August' is simply sublime, with sampled jazz horns, twinkling piano motifs and luscious chords rising above a shuffling jazz-house rhythm and a lovely bassline. The Russian producer then switches to bumpin', loop-based disco-house thrills ('Signor Promidor') and loose-limbed, funk-sampling, shoulder-swinging brilliance ('Shaking'), before rounding things off via the spy chase-friendly jazz-house bump of 'Double Bass'.

It’s about time for the first release of this true master of deep jazzy house, Shaka! Shaka has an impressive list of releases, ranging back to the mid 90’s with some raw techno up to now with releases on Local Talk or his own label Vibes and Grooves for some serious deep house. His „Four flowers EP“ has plenty of soul soothing jazz-funk grooves nailed to a deep house beat and you just feel that Shaka is a real musician. And we agree, these 4 tracks are hot ingredients!

Toy Tonics welcome one of the US’ absolute legends in the game on their roster - Kai Alcé!  One of the original masters of jazzy house, Kai is a prime example of someone who witnessed the genesis of Detroit’s electronic musical landscape and strives to keep that spirit alive. Being of Haitian descent laid the foundation for his musical ear, starting with his childhood in Queens, New York. Some of his earliest musical influences included his mother’s penchant for soca music and the distinct Caribbean rhythms of his culture. An appreciation of Jazz would be further guided by his father’s expanding audiophile home system. During the 1970s the kindling of Hip Hop and the heyday of Disco perked the ear of a young Kai while they were living in NYC. The Big Apple would remain a constant throughout his musical journey as the years went on, but it was the move to Michigan that ultimately shaped his artistic vision.

On this 5 track EP Kai once again makes it all feel so easy! Deeply musical, yet also instantly effective on the dance floor, tracks like ‘New Life Livin’ and ‘Slide It In’ come with an ease that shows why he’s shaped the game for decades.

The indecision was killing him. He struggled to make sense of the environment around him let alone what went on within his own head. The only way in which he had learnt to cope with the nature of uncertainty was by firmly grounding himself in a singular, solitary maybe. No other answer would suffice and let his beating brain be still. He wondered whether other people were burdened with as much crippling self doubt as that which plagued him day in day out. Maybe they were, maybe not. 

Larry De Kat is one to watch. His newly founded label Katnip is making moves and 2017 sees him kick off a new season for the label with a self produced EP accompanied with remixes bound to entice and excite. Dj Nature and Frits Wentink step up to offer alternatives.

A real meeting of minds - both artists express their love for the deep and organic, incorporating Brazilian sounds, gospel, disco, jazz and soul in their music. Their similar, detailed approach and ideology blend perfectly on this 12” release.
