A new addition to the label’s extended family, Tracey arrives on Dial with his debut LP, Biostar. Following previous releases on Aus Music, Voyage Direct and Intergraded, ‘Biostar’ pushes the technical and emotional craft of this vital young producer in exciting new directions, submerging listeners in thirteen tracks of sublime electro, ambient experimentation and warm, tonal techno.
Based in the Netherlands, Tracey’s music is undoubtedly indebted to a legacy of emotive electronic music, the sort whose stark futurist vision cannot be equalled. Instead he strives and succeeds to create something personal and charismatic from a perhaps familiar palette of sounds. Somewhere between experimentation and understated songwriting, ‘Biostar’ is a worthy edition to Dial’s legacy of unique, artist-led albums.
In the tradition of established Dial artists such as Lawrence, Roman Flugel and Efdemin, Tracey’s immediately apparent strength is an almost supernatural ability to conjure affecting and memorable melodies with minimalist intent, often just utilising the raw textures of his machines.
From album-opener ‘THRRVL’, Tracey tracks the initially gentle undulations of his studio seemingly waking to life, plotting a neat melodic shuffle on ‘TRR’ and then, by, ‘CCLRT’, something dense, trippy and yearning. From hereon in, ‘Biostar’ plots an intriguing course through hypnotic, clockwork crunch (‘THWRD’), to Drexciyan submersion (‘HDRCSTCS’) and rhythmic experimentation on ‘PHTCPHRK’. 
Some of the more affecting moments on ‘Biostar’ emerge from it’s more obtuse sections; ‘DTFNK’ deciphers a surprisingly catchy melody among waves of scrambled signals, while the initially skittish ‘DRMRBT’ blossoms into an electro lullaby at 126bpm. By the arrival of wistful closing track ‘CLSTLBNG’, listeners are likely to emerge content from the deepest exploration yet of Tracey’s unique analogue ecosystem.

Experienced Dutch producer Tom Ruijg rightly won praise for his first 12” as Tracey, Skyfall, which surfaced on Voyage Direct in early 2017. Combining elements seemingly inspired by vintage Detroit futurism, ‘90s ambient techno and his own love of colourful synthesizer melodies, the EP saw Tracey set out his stall in impressive fashion.

Here he returns to action with his most expansive outing yet, a four-track excursion that does a good job in not only showcasing the depth and variety of his influences, but also Ruijg’s ability to turn his hand to a variety of dancefloor-focused styles whilst retaining a colourful vibe all of his own.

Compare and contrast, for example, the two A-side cuts. While “Testarossa” is far-sighted and spacey, with Tracey wrapping intergalactic electronics and lilting synthesizer melodies around a darting synthesizer bassline and swinging, electro-influenced house drums, “Sidekick” is blissful and almost overwhelmingly melodious: all 16-bit new age motifs, head-in-the-clouds electronics and driving, locked-in machine drums.

The contrasts continue on the B-side, too. Many DJs may instinctively be drawn towards “Made My Love”, whose energy-packed groove (think vintage Chicago jack with a dollop of slick NYC house soul) is peppered with spacey chords, undulating electronic motifs and glacial melodies. Yet the track that follows, the wild and windy electro workout that is “Interceptor”, is every bit as potent when played over club sound systems. The track’s inherent hustle, seemingly the product of Ruijg’s darting synth stabs and feverish audio textures, is almost impossible to resist.

The machine was lively and roared with the noise of glitches and beeps. It echoed in the dense office space in which there was little soul but for the flickering screens and flashing lights. There was a funny smell which hung in the air, it was murky and stale - a foggy mist in which humans, processors and errors were all that wandered. In the corner, the boss laughed and smiled with a wry sense of arrogance and cynicism. It was pointed and cruel...

The flickering lights flashed and buzzed upon the billboard, the giant screen looked down upon the passing people who walked beneath the radiant glare of the monitor. They were not aware of the dense, intricate complexity required to make such electronic engineering work and whiz behind the scenes. Each pixel was like a microdancer, a tiny orb which danced and died in the blink of an eye only to be replaced by the next pulsing light. It was night time in the city and the glow of the billboard was all which illuminated the way for the lonely walkers, a city ignorant and unthinking. Lead by the visions on a midnight screen. 

Tracey is set to release a new EP on Aus Music, an electro inspired affair which channels the rough and rugged sounds commonly associated with Den Haag. This one has been widely supported and works a treat.

He tore through the night on a motorbike, part human and part machine he whizzed through the traffic at an electric pace and laughed hysterically at the chaos he left in his wake. He was a dataman, a crazed being who was not fed by the desires and needs of you and me but by numbers, status and code. The sun was setting upon an electric town and the night would soon be well underway. People would gather on the streets of the city to forget themselves but he would be there watching, counting, tracking and observing. That was his job. 

Many artists are releasing new music in line with Bandcamp announcing waived fees. Tracey is a producer from Amsterdam who produces expertly crafted electronics and is taking part. This new EP is self released, a brilliant assortment of fast paced electro and wonky melodies dotted across three tracks.
