Cliff Dalton - Rise Of The Robot Man LP [Specimen Records - SPEC-021]

Since mid-2020 Cliff Dalton has been influenced by 80’s soundtracks. setting about to create a blend of dark robotic mechanical and deep electro. As an artist, his use of conceptual themes is constructed of elements that create dense atmospheric soundscapes. Probing as an interface between harsh reality and pure fiction. He reveals a surrealistic emphasis on sonic particles into the realms of electro.

The Dutch West Coast, home of the Hague, where Cliff Dalton resides, the home of a new producer for Specimen Records 2021. Although not new to the world of producing with several years of recording and playing in studios, his attention to detail has helped him develop a retro mapping onto his perception of the future. Possibly influenced by Underground Resistance and Drexciya. This accomplishment becomes a metaphor for any small group of people who are battling against a system. The album is an observation of what’s happening right now around us. Our interaction with technology and media pervasion and the rise of cybernetics, in a world dominated by corporate ideals.

Track A3 Travelling Without Moving -
This comes with a more danceable approach. The beat is tight and the swing is irresistible. This is how it’s like to float around, in the ocean, or in your mind. It is all watery business. The melodies are really lifting this tune-up and remind me of old black ‘n white sci-fi flicks.

Having sprinkled her magic on ‘Herbert’s Finest 06’ earlier this year, one of techno’s most distinctive vibe evangelists returns to the Monaberry family fold for her first full label release: Bebetta.

Monabetta: it’s the perfect match... Like Monaberry’s output, Bebetta’s joyous unpredictability ensures a blindfold ride into sensory abandon with not so much as a whiff of preconceptions, formula or rigidity.

‘Uppercut’ is less of a punch and more a slo-mo disco karate chop where stars and rainbows appear on impact. The uncompromised kicks and thwacking eight-bar snare snap your senses while the pensive one note riff, bulbous bass and cosmic synth weaves gradually climax into a Detroitian piano-smashing riff so evocative you could just lose your shoes.

‘Shimmy’ brings to mind oceanic ripples, which swell progressively and a timeless arpeggio, which ebbs, flows and occasionally bursts into full bodied bass before breaking out into an illustrious build where ghostly vocals mirror the sea’s glimmers in an agelessly classic way.

Remix-wise Monabetta is packing equally serious heat: Viktor Talking Machine play the quintessential Street Fighters with an ‘Uppercut’ version that pummels with a juicy 808 and a short sharp break into the heavenly piano hook. German Brigante flips the switch on ‘Shimmy’, too, twisting our focus on the creepy crawly bass and pure epicity of the chords. Finally Lowertones bossman Leix adds a softer focus to ‘Uppercut’s emotional narrative and more of a jacking swing to the drums for a shorter, subtler journey.

Monaberry’s label boss, good old Herb, is back in business. The House multi-talent curates the latest Mona compilation – Herberts Best #8. Famous Monaberry artists and new faces from all over the world follow his call and deliver exquisite productions to grandpa Herbert.

Tim Engelhardt’s contribution “Skin” is a deep hitting symphony of a cineastic atmosphere, rolling drums, crystal clear luminescent synths and captivating arpeggios. Mi.li.an’s vocals enchantingly highlight the track’s vibrant beat and the analog drive finally flows into bubbly extasy.

Just right after the release of his latest track on Monaberry Sobek pleases grandpa Herbert with “Camerlengo” – a gently evolving and hypnotically dragging track with some smacking groove that wraps around the floating framework and tickles your senses all at once.

Armonica, the charismatic duo from the dephts of Italy, put a mad peaktime track on the table. “Time” is just bursting with slightly dark synths and FXs. The energizing bass line and the vocals reduced to the essentials are literally pushing this track onto the global stage.

Another track is delivered by Sonic Future from Porto Alegre, Brazil. His artwork “Pontilismo” is full of vigorous rhythm, crisp synth variations and minimal 80ies flair that will knock your socks off. Especially the filter modulated chords carry you away to Alpha Centauri and fuse together with the beat into an embracing sound.

Luis Junior brings “Go Gech” into play, a rotating Detroit UFO made of technoid ruthlessness and deep groove. He successfully blends dramatic synth chords, vocal snippets, and striking FXs into a continuous storyboard with a break that will make your endorphins dance and pleases with a lovingly staged happy end.

Italian stallion Ivan Masa uses Afro House elements and sprinkles some melodic parts and softly playful groove to build the sound frame of “Nativity”. Dense spaces and percussions merge into an ethno inspired work of art that will flow straight into your body and soul.

Ikarius & Dhakka join with “Salvation”, a hypnotic production that catapults the audience into a next dimension with opulent synth chords and effects, crunchy claps and subtle toms. The track composition is indeed psychedelic and a powerful tool.
Ultimately, a compilation like this can only be brought into being by good old Herb himself. We bow to his wisdom and cannot wait for these seven gorgeous pieces.

Rave-loving rule breakers Younger Than Me take the reins on the next Nein Records release, with Curses and Man2.0 stepping up to remix. Younger Than Me is the duo of Marcello Carozzi and Francesco Mingrino , a pair that have a recognisable sound linking old rave and newer influences from the European club scene. They are resident DJs at monthly party Futura and have also played cult spots like Salon Zur Wilden Renate, BAR Rotterdam, Griessmuehle and many more. They already released with Bordello in Parigi, Relish Records and Tusk Wax and are co-founders of the 90’s Wax project. The opener ‘No Regrets’ is a rugged and brain frying disco-techno track. Stark synth lines twist and turn over heavy drums as wild, flaming percussion brings energy up top. It is perfectly dark and raw and pure dance floor dynamite. The superb remix is from Curses, a Berlin based artist known for blending rock & roll with the darker side of disco. In his hands ‘No regrets’ becomes a strobe lit mix of EBM, New Wave, post-punk and psychedelic synths that jerks your body into action. Then comes UK talent and Det Sync and Flight Recorder associate MAN2.0 with another excellent remix that has metallic hits, arpeggiated bass and bouncing chords bringing the dystopian disco vibes. If you can feel a chill in the air it must mean there's more arcane sorcery being cooked up in the Blind Allies labs. This Latvian label are surely providing some of the strongest strains of pitch-black underground electro from lesser known operators in the machine funk catacombs. On this new various artists 12", White Mane Horse and Deputy Bender fire off sleek and sinister rhythms while UHU has a little tongue in cheek fun behind the veil of icy whispered vocals and nervy bleeps on "No Body Knows Electro". Theory Of Noise sound taut and robotic, Olloy keeps things plush but noirish, Rnbws fires off a high-definition sound and Theory Of Noise returns for the simply brilliant "Mission".

The landscape was a wonder to behold; flowers danced in the wind next to strange, angular plants, and huge ferns towered high into the sky. Though the sun's rays beat down on the plant life below from morning to night, they blossomed and flourished in these tropical conditions, happily existing in their own microscosm. One where nature ruled and human's weren't there to destroy it...

After an almost year long hiatus, London-based imprint air miles return with a new offering from Familiar Strangers boss Remotif. The Bristol DJ and producer, who has previously released music via Alfresco Disco and his own imprint, makes his debut on air miles with the transcendental 'Gondwana at Noon' which, following the format of the label's last offering, comes complete with three remixes from Nathan Micay, Molly and Jeigo.

Operating from The Dutch West Coast, home of the Hague, where Cliff Dalton resides. Although not new to the world of producing with several years of recording and playing in studios, his attention to detail has helped him develop a retro mapping onto his perception of the future.



Since mid-2020 Cliff Dalton has been influenced by 80’s soundtracks. setting about to create a blend of dark robotic mechanical and deep electro. As an artist, his use of conceptual themes is constructed of elements that create dense atmospheric soundscapes. 

Probing as an interface between harsh reality and pure fiction. He reveals a surrealistic emphasis on sonic particles into the realms of electro.
