Dutch duo Black Cadmium team up with Vault Wax this summer to deliver a five-track EP entitled ‘Our Legacy’.

Joginda Macnack and Mike Richards, who make up the Black Cadmium duo, are two Dutch DJs, producers, and radio hosts of Surinamese descent who focus on a wide variety of authentic music. Black Cadmium are heavily influenced by the London to Detroit connection—from Hi-Tek to grime-tinged, UK sounds. On their musical journey, they have found themselves and delivered enchanting music on labels such Naive, Afro Acid, Ovum, United Identities, and acid-focused, Rotterdam-based imprint, Vault Wax, who the pair team up with again this summer. These two creative minds will guide you through their interpretation of sound with an explorative vision and an anything kind of attitude.

Unpacking the artifacts and coded runes that make up this new EP from Dez Williams gives a sense that whatever is contained in these tracks definitely comes from off-world.

'Rewire the Human' and 'Tales of the Uninfected' strike that raw nerve between electro and IDM, where the beats are a sturdy vessel for a sound which is otherwise totally raw, slanted and strikingly atmospheric. 'GUPI' is more a displacement of molecules, for reassembly in an unseen dimension. 'Tolerant' takes a funky ride through junk robotics, with atypical swung breaks and bizarro jazz chord pads. 'Jacid' delivers an abrupt and sobering wake-up, snapping your mind from the abstract to the straight acid experience that drips from a solid wall of kick, clap and ride. Dez has a way of tinting even the most straightforward stylistic work with custom lenses and palettes.

'Seeing Stars' is an epic closing cut, speaking truth to the moods and messages that might have been derived from the preceding material. On minimal textured beats made from treated scrap drum hits, under the ominous shadow of a massive canopy of warm unison saw waves, hovers an endearing melodic element, safely contained in tearful elation.

Berlin producer, Random Alias, returns with a post-lockdown reflection that includes dance-floor
fillers and sonic journeys in electro, techno and acid.

BOM002 explores the dichotomy of human existence that is monotonous conformity and search
for freedom. This latest release from Random Alias, makes you want to move just as much as
take a moment for reflection. With each track we’re presented with the iconic red pill/blue pill
concept: Remain slaves to the control and automation of modern society? Or strive for freedom
as we define it ourselves?

Automat opens side A with its smouldering bassline that at times becomes warped as the 5
minutes unfold. A dreamy synth line enters like a fragmented, existential thought. The kind that
wakes you up in the dead of night or while you’re in the middle of a shower. The remix from
iconic electro producer, DJ Overdose, takes the original to a darker place with a slower,
aggressive synth. It’s a ‘Freakfest’ as Overdose defines it.

Side B starts with Nu Funk and its representation of simple efficiency. The track keeps it tight
while retaining the free-spiritedness of funk. Its warm sounds take a more old school approach
and are a call to retain an easier life free from fame, money and power to the single individual.
While Night Drive closes the release with a rolling bass and pads that drive a progressive
sound. At its core, the record takes the listener on a trip exploring sounds and styles and the
timeless notion that change is the outcome of reflection.

Nobody had ever told her it might feel like this, a weightless heaven in which her wildest dreams could soar high upon the breeze. She wondered if she might ever hit the ground and hoped that this freefall might last a lifetime... 

Dream-E is a Glaswegian producer and DJ based in Berlin. Last year he was diagnosed with a very rare but severe brain infection called Encephalitis. He is still in recovery but has since started a label to release his own music with funds raised from the releases going towards The Encephalitis Society Charity - an organisation that helps those and their families less fortunate than he.

German electro producer Martin Matiske has recently breathed new life into his Blackploid alias. The project’s revival continues to bear fruit with the Strange Stars EP, Matiske’s third Blackploid release of 2021 and second for Central Processing Unit after issuing March’s Cosmic Traveler EP through the Sheffield label.
Blackploid’s two CPU drops have more in common than just stargazing titles. Those who enjoyed Cosmic Traveler will find plenty to like again in these four tracks, with Matiske serving up another quartet of snappy machine-funk joints this time around. However, while there is certainly a throughline between Cosmic Traveler and Strange Stars, this EP also finds Blackploid pushing the envelope at points by taking risks with his synth tones which thrill and enliven the record.
In keeping with the cosmic theme of Blackploid’s recent output, Strange Stars kicks off with ‘Star Patrol’. While this opening cut is full of the same needle-gun basslines and dinky synths that characterised Cosmic Traveler, the drum programming eschews the broken beats favoured by many in the scene for a straight house/techno snap. It makes for a very groovy jam, one with Drexciya, Computer World-era Kraftwerk and a pinch of Space Dimension Controller in its mix.
Indeed, the only track on Strange Stars which skips along on a broken beat is second entry ‘The Signal’. ‘The Signal’ also features some of Blackploid’s most impressive electronics programming to date, announcing itself with a brilliantly unusual synth that sounds like an old video game unit which has just gained sentience. When this alien tone is combined with another precision-engineered bassline the track invokes the grizzly bangers of the L.I.E.S. label, though the keyboard stabs which enter periodically also hint to the funkier electro of, say, Egyptian Lover.
‘The Unseen’, the first B-side of Strange Stars, finds Blackploid bringing together many of the things which made the two previous tunes such standouts. A steady four-on-the-floor and a slightly haunted feel to the synth choices casts back to ‘Star Patrol’, but much like ‘The Signal’ this joint also features some rather weird tones which are a hair’s breadth away from machine malfunction. It’s a feeling which runs through to closing cut ‘Light Corridor’, a number where melodies and anti-melodies zip around an array of gurgling electronic cells.
Martin Matiske’s fine run of Blackploid EPs continues with the intergalactic electro stylings of Strange Stars.

The project name »A / B« references several aspects of the cooperation: The initials of the artist names Akaroid and BYDL, the distance from A to B and the A and B sides of the tape cassette. The two artists worked in a shared folder in their home studios in Berlin and Vienna without ever meeting or making explanatory phone calls. Each musician brought in his own elements, samples, sound designs and production techniques in order to play in new parts using the ping-pong process, to arrange them or to change the material of the predecessor through manipulation and processing. The sound generation and the sound design took place via analog / digital modular synthesizers as well as in the laptop or via conventional miking of acoustic instruments (percussion). The entire EP is supported by a sense of cooperation and innovative ways not to lose common creativity to isolation, even when contact is prohibited.
The basis of all tracks consists of extractions from field recordings. The ambiences and original notes obtained in this way (mainly from Vienna and Berlin - A / B) were not only processed with effects, but also used via MIDI programming to output beat, melody or harmony. As a result, the recordings fit more organically into the track structure and are supported by the arrangement of those elements that are more familiar to the hearing of the recipients. On the one hand, the title of the track reveals the location of the respective field recordings used in the track and, on the other hand, the one or two-digit number in brackets shows how often the project was sent from A to B before it was finalized, which provides a unique insight into the artists way of production.
