When Rubin showed up in Jay-Z’s series of Samsung commercials, social media was abuzz wondering who the old white guy was and, to our surprise, a lot of people didn’t have the slightest clue who the legendary figure was.

Not only was he hanging out on the couch during Jay’s TV spots, Rubin also showed up in the 25th hour to executive produce on Kanye’s Yeezus. So that’s two of the largest names in rap calling on one bearded old guy to have a hand in their work. Yet, so many people remained unaware of him?

And like that, our brains were activated, led by Trackstar.

Writing on Rubin’s history and contributions to not only rap but music in general would require an encyclopedia worth of words and pages. Plus, there’s Wikipedia to break down all of his work since 1982. His founding of Def Jam alongside Russell Simmons might be the most recognizable feather in his cap but he wasn’t just an exec. He was an instrumental force and sound behind nascent recordings by the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J and Run-DMC, all of which were early education for budding rap nerds like Trackstar.

But Rubin’s works didn’t end when he left Def Jam, his own label, Def American, or the head job at Columbia Records. Rick has HITS under his belt (so many, his production credits have a Wiki of their page own) and they span across multiple genres and decades.

And that’s why this tape was billed as “some of” the key cuts and affectionately “ruined by” Trackstar. As much as Track wanted to, there’s no way to pack a perfect collection of Rubin’s work into one mix. That task would take volumes. Even boiling it down to one genre was daunting, so Track decided to mix and match. There’s some Red Hot Chili Peppers here, a little Kanye there and a dab of System Of A Down. Of course, Run-DMC’s included, but they’re followed by Queen and freakin’ Johnny Cash? The names read like strange bedfellows alongside each other.

But every single cut shares a common denominator and that’s Rick Rubin.

RTJ2 TOUR MIX FINAL

We are a week into tour but better late than never: I present for your enjoyment the Jewel Runner Tour mixtape. I've dropped more merch than mixes lately--including my SKRATCH FAN snapback collabo with DJ Q-Bert and the RAPFANxRTJDJ t-shirt--but it all starts with the music, so I had to put something together for the tour. 

The project features tracks from all four acts, including Boots' Meow the Jewels remix and RTJ's late night television performance with TV On The Radio, as well as incredibly dope exclusives from Fashawn and Cuz Lightyear. Mike and El did some light hosting in classic WRTJ fashion, and the artwork was expertly handled by the great Ian Klarer, who also did the tour poster and last year's tour mix cover, among other things.

THE JEWEL RUNNER TOUR MIXTAPE

Rest in peace to a man who was an essential part of the group that made me fall in love with hip hop, a group that will always stand among my very favorite artists in the history of music. I don't normally put together mixes in the wake of an artist's passing but Phife had a bigger influence on me than most so I knocked out a quick one highlighting some of my favorite Tribe jams. Peace, love and respect to his family and friends, the whole Native Tongues and everyone else whose life he touched while he was here.

Best known for his prolific mixtape work and touring with Run the Jewels, @trackstarthedj, has created a swerving, hypnotic 14-minute megamix for DJ Shadow's new album 'The Mountain Will Fall' (out now on @massappealrecs).

DJ Shadow's 'The Mountain Will Fall' is the pioneering musician and producer's first album in five years and finds him exploring new realms of composition and soundscapes.  The album was released in June to rave reviews, a performance with Run The Jewels on The Tonight Show, and a #1 iTunes electronic chart debut in 16 countries, including his first #1 on Billboard's Dance / Electronic chart in U.S.

Solid Steel (12th May) In Hour 1 we welcome Trackstar the DJ, who is the tour DJ for Run The Jewels and is known for his prolific mixtape work. He has played hundreds of venues and dozens festivals all over the world, including Madison Square Garden, Coachella, and Glastonbury, where he returns with Killer Mike and EL-P on 24th June and Field Day on 3rd June. He told us;
 "Originally I had other plans for a more conceptual mix, but as I was telling The Gaslamp Killer about my ideas on our tour date in Belgium, he told me not to bother with any of them and instead do a mix displaying what he called "My Rare Appetite In Rap". I trust The Gaslamp Killer (as you should, too), so I immediately switched gears and started putting together a playlist of songs from the last half-decade or so that I love that many rap fans may have missed. It features some names you'll recognize as well as some that you may not… Hopefully you enjoy these tunes as much as I do, and maybe pick up a new favorite artist or two.”
