The Days Pass Quickly Immersed in the Shadow of Eternity (Excerpt)

A brief excerpt of my sound installation Recurrences, which was created for the 2023 premiere edition of the Biennale Son in Sion Switzerland. The audio was recorded in and around the Grande Dixence dam in the mountains surrounding the Valais region. The water sounds, which were captured by hydrophone in various locations in and around the dam were diffused through an underwater speaker inside the large circular black tub, which filtering the audio creating a more intimate and distant effect.  

Recurrences returns the original source of energy from the Grande Dixence dam to La Centrale via intimate recordings made around and within the dam itself. This energetic material is relocated back into the dormant hydro plant as a memory or ghost, emerging from a still vessel of water surrounded by the distant sounds of its now empty house.

The composition combines everyday sounds such as footsteps on different surfaces, the tearing of paper, lighting a match, playing tennis, clapping hands, horses clattering, machine noises and the like with voice samples from my archive, which the Dutch mezzo-soprano singer Jannie Pranger made available to me some time ago and of which a few have been electroni- cally manipulated. These two components are tightly interwoven and form an exciting, multi-layered and multi-faceted musique concrète.
The everyday sounds are treated in the same way as the vocal sounds; for example, in the way one deals with the sounds of percussion instruments, which are also largely noisy. A drum roll, a cymbal crash, a rattle ... or an electric saw, a creaking door, shattering glass, the impact of a golf ball, a swarm of bees, etc. The mezzo-soprano voice involved is extremely varied. Snapping or hissing sounds, whispering, speaking, singing, whistling, blowing and every conceivable sound that can be produced with the voice are included. Earth is the only planet known to date that sounds; where we are constantly surrounded by sounds and noises produced by humans and animals, wind, water, etc. I wanted to represent and celebrate a tiny section of this unique sonic diversity of planet Earth in my composition. The word “maa” in the title is the Finnish word for earth/land.
