“FORGE’ is about the small pockets of communities that are overlooked, unheard, ignored.” 

The new collection is bolder than ever, elevating the London trio’s distinctive take on electronic music with heavier, more aggressive instrumentation. Presenting a cover song on their last album, the band follows suit on this record with “Max”, a song by award-winning Italian singer, pianist and composer Paolo Conte with guest vocals from Italy’s Fabrizio Pagni (Arqtic, Zen Circus). Fassine has garnered acclaim from The Guardian, The Independent, Clash and more with comparisons spanning Trent Reznor to Berlin-era Bowie.

Album track “Perfectly Planned” is inspired by Fassine’s real life hero, Hannah Hauxwell, a Yorkshire farmer who led a challenging and isolated existence, caring for elderly relatives while running her farm in extreme conditions. She became an overnight celebrity when, after appearing in an ITV documentary, her virtues of hard work without any complaints or expectation of praise, identified with the masses. Meanwhile “Hellsto” extols the working women of WW1 and WW2, who often go nameless.

Since their last release, Fassine’s XTC cover of “That Wave” appeared on the Sky Arts documentary on the seminal band, This Is Pop. Their track “Whatever It Takes To Help You Sleep” played as the backdrop to Netflix’s first feature film “Velvet Buzzsaw”, and ”Leaves” was featured on Oprah Winfrey’s Queen Sugar.

FORGE means ‘to create something strong and enduring’. With this new album, Fassine has embodied the grit and grime of their personal heroes and wield an industrial and hard-hitting piece of craftsmanship.

Phenomena ushers in the new year with label boss Solid Stone presenting his ‘Veritas’ EP. 2019 proved to be a fruitful campaign for the Canadian artist. His unique take on melodic techno continued to earn support from the underground’s premiere tastemakers in Adriatique, Tale Of Us and Solomun. Now following a remix for Mango Alley to begin 2020, Solid Stone lands back on his comfortable home of Phenomena with a two-track artist showcase. 

In a year that saw the Montreal resident continue to evolve as an artist, 2020 gets underway with a similar sentiment. Following in the footsteps of December’s ‘Lotus’ is the tough yet tranquil ‘Veritas’. Following a DJ friendly intro of muted beats and buzzing electronics comes powerful kicks and percussive flashes. Tastefully trance-like, a solemn arp fades to prominence, creating hopeful moments before growling stabs pierce the air during a placid interlude. As anticipation builds clusters of noise and drums converge, sparking a tasteful re-entry and smooth yet exhilarating conclusion. 

Rounding out the release and sitting as a fiery complement to its predecessor is ‘Sparda’. Beginning with a chunky groove the piece moves with swing heavy momentum as layers of percussion and buzzing synths converge for an effervescent core. A spacey lead motif shifts the narrative further into cosmic territory as the breakdown begins to take shape. Ethereal yet tense, it’s kaleidoscopic slow burn fully saturates your senses before a flurry of drums cues an astral finale. It caps off what is a promising start to the year for Solid Stone who continues to break creative boundaries with this excellent two track offering.
