This month’s guest is German-born Turkish artist @SedefAdasi, a DJ and burgeoning producer based in the city of Augsburg, Germany. Sedef is  perhaps best known for @HAMAMNights, her self-made event series which sees her booking not only local favourites but big name artists at City Club, one of her hometown’s handful of electronic music clubs. Despite a jam-packed tour schedule and a new residency at Panorama Bar, Sedef isn’t interested in moving to a music capital, preferring to work with friends to create all-inclusive events and workshops that foster the growth of her community. 

In this episode, Sedef and I discuss the story of HAMAM Nights, small city living, and its impact on her creativity as a DJ and producer.

This one’s a firm nod to London and its unique cultural genome. Tasha got her start in drum and bass, with early support from DJ Flight and Storm, regular slots at Renegade Hardware, and a side shift at central London’s now defunct record store BM Soho. That, and her own party-going forays threw a growing fixation with techno into the mix and it’s here at the crossroads of these two influences that Tasha started to find her voice. For four years starting 2009, and now again on a monthly basis since 2018, she’s held down a residency on Rinse FM, and the distinctly homespun feel of the outlet has left a permanent mark on her sound, one that’s intimately tied to both community and the station’s roots as a fledgling pirate station way back when. Equally formative was Shoreditch venue Plastic People, where she took charge of event programming alongside Sigha, a role she followed with the starting of her own solo venture titled ’Neighbourhood’ - a bringing together of artists in her orbit among which figure names like Pangaea, Pariah, Ben Sims, Zenker Brothers and Stenny. It now calls FOLD home, but the name, and you’d be hard pressed to find a better one, has stuck. It also stuck to the label that project spawned in 2016 and all the subsequent releases that kept that vision going. Tasha’s art, like the life it inhabits, is in constant movement. Brisk basslines with a heavy debt to London’s wealth of musical styles, openness of spirit and DIY fervour. Bassiani Podcast 232 is a banger, 70 minutes of contagious rhythmic momentum; kinetic techno with a UK twist and a point of inflection that’s firmly rooted in the city she calls home. Welcome to the neighbourhood.

The 10 year celebration continues with a hybrid live recorded set from German dab hand Vril. Much of his work, like the metaphysical and culturally seminal substance from which he took the name, is heavy on duality, hard and gentle, vibrating with machinelike power and shot through with a raw and often tender emotion. It’s a calculation that has yielded some of the most unforgettable sounds of recent times, 2018’s heavy-hitting Anima Mundi or last year’s Animist have lost none of their soul-stirring resonance, and his purist techno reaches far beyond his published work. Live and in flow state, he carries just as strong a charge, a frothing, fulgurant techno that invokes awe and measures in colossal proportions. Leave aside collabs with Rødhåd and Sebastian Mullaert for Circle of Live, though the magic’s there too. It’s an arcane and ghostly sound that burrows into the soul and leaves its mark, and in his scores of fans and 51 toured countries, it has. For Bassiani Podcast 237 the haunting power of his work finds form in 92 minutes of visceral techno that rolls from crystalline form to brooding storm. The sound of a new world dawning just beyond our current horizon.
