The Brvtalist is pleased to host Catartsis - Press (Ōtone Repress). This composition comes off Ōtone and Catartsis' spilt EP, Mechanical Gesture, which OBSCUUR originally released digitally in August 2020. The EP was met with wide acclaim and supported by DJ Stingray, Martin Gore (Depeche Mode), Manni Dee, Machine Woman, Rommek and Tapefeed, OBSCUUR now brings us the vinyl issue of the EP which brings the pair's excellent work on to analog format. 

The artists explore, both in their collaborative and respective work, a wide spectrum of electronic and electroacoustic music with the practices of field recording and attentive listening at the core of their creative process. Inspired by musique concrète and electroacoustic sonic manipulations, they combine and alter sounds from the real, from their surroundings and from found (mainly metallic) objects. Stemming from this approach, they engage in rhythmical and textural research to elaborate a — peculiar, acousmatic and almost tangible — percussive and club-oriented music.

Following the lurid techno histrionics of Peder Mannerfelt’s All In Your Hands, the PM+ series doubles down with unnerving efficiency to present a formidable pair of club levellers from a formidable pair of club levellers. As an artist across many media, Zoë Mc Pherson slips between easy definition, with an uncompromising experimental attitude which sometimes tests soundsystems and sometimes fills gallery spaces. Ciarra Black operates in murky fringes of contemporary techno, comfortable wielding industrial intensity and eerie negative space alike. 

As Carbon 96, Mc Pherson and Black first performed a live hardware collaboration for the COMMON multiverse live stream in 2021. Now their joint venture gets pumped full of gas and rises to the surface, manifesting as two sharply tooled rhythms. The first, ‘Hyper Hunter’, is a finely balanced blend of pummeling percussion and cavernous space, marked out by echoes and purrs that soften the attack of the rapid-fire low-end thunder. ‘Club Soda’ is a fizzy spritzer in comparison, rocking at a peppy tempo with its own cascade of higher-register pockmarks and angular rave stabs squashed into blunt instruments.

SPLOT – collective, club night, record label. Founded in 2019 by Glassz and Guiltee with a goal of challenging and broadening the ideas of club music existing in our local scene. Having the mission of spreading our fascination with broken beats, dub, techno, UK bass and anything in between at heart, we’ve already had the pleasure of hosting a couple of renowned artists such as Bruce, Rhyw, Appleblim, Low End Activist, Awkwardly Social, Forest Drive West or Mani Festo and trailblazed our own bass-path through the city soundscape, releasing local talents such as dadan karambolo or IWANN.

Hailing from Kyiv and based in Wroclaw, SPLOT welcomes Yes Stanley to the label with a truly hypnotic Entourage EP. The record opens out with Tenditno; a blend of some cold IDM/ambient work out and breaky structures. Based on the field recorded sounds of gurgling and bubbling water, Discipline delivers the tasty atmospheric-electro at its finest. Following is Rabbit-Hole that shows you how deep the bass and rabbit-hole go; the track is a dynamic cut of charming electro bass. For the title track Entourage, Yes Stanley takes us to territory of groovy trance; designed for big techno rooms, presenting grinded textures and modern stereo rhythms. Kyiv13 is a personal summary, swinging around modern breakbeat featuring a sequence of lovely pads, french vocals, amen breaks and acid bass.

Datashader emerges from the shadows with a striking breaks- and bass-heavy debut release that challenges the fabric of our digital existence. Replete with a Dopplereffekt remix, it nods to the legacy of revered anonymous acts such as Scopex, Drexciya and Underground Resistance, pushing the boundaries of both electronic music exploration and its conceptual underpinnings. As a critique of the erosion of genuine human connection in the digital age, Datashader delivers a barrage of billowing subs, infectious electro, recontextualized jungle, and techno, serving as a poignant counterbalance to current dance floor-centric norms. It's a contemporary anti-soundtrack that offers a haunting mirror to the societal costs of technological convenience. 

In a world engulfed by the digital realm, where social media platforms thrive and dominate every aspect of our lives, the enigmatic project known as Datashader was founded to reflect on the pervasive erosion of authentic human connection through various virtual realities.

Artistically, Datashader seeks to critique the impact of technology on human identity and relationships, breaking with an archetype of digital conformity and expressing a profound disillusionment with the superficiality of online interactions through music. Genuine human connection and art cannot be quantified by likes, comments, or followers but rather thrives in the visceral realm of shared sonic experience and human emotion. This idea is at the core idea of Datashader, whose artistic expression ranges from avant-garde composition and electronic experimentations to art, installation, film and more.

Expressed within the varied contexts of diverse artistic mediums, Datashader explores the concept of "technological gentrification", which describes the gradual displacement of human interaction by technology. Just as gentrification alters the urban landscape, driving out communities and cultures, digital gentrification transforms the social landscape, replacing genuine connection with curated online personas. 

Musically, Datashader's practice confronts this dystopian reality, highlighting the alarming consequence of people becoming mere nodes in a network, reduced to a collection of data points. This is manifested sonically by a blistering assault of breaks, recontextualized IDM, abstract electronics and otherworldly synthscapes, conceived as the aesthetic counterbalance to much of contemporary electronic music's dancefloor focus. 

Datashader dives deep into genres and influences which stand for a form of sonic resistance: A contemporary anti- soundtrack &ndash; a sonic mirror of the price we pay for convenience and instant gratification. A self-image in constant flux. No false technological idols.
