Precise, cyclical, cold and above all, atemporal. The sound of one of the most advanced projects of the ‘90s comes back into the spotlight almost 20 years later. “Iesope Drift” and “Ostia” are two of the monikers of producers D. Blaze and Ronald L., best known as the duo “Obscurum” from the golden era of techno.

This mini-compilation joins four of their best productions released under the label “Seico Corp”, a cult record imprint for incited listeners and lovers of the deep and raw side of electronic music. Including milestone tracks “Arlette” and “Idioms”, it aims to be a tribute to the original series, and of course, to the producers that shaped it.

The Berlin-based label Ownlife debuts this new series called “Seld”, perpetuating the legacy of some of techno’s pioneers, and bringing the attention back to music that keeps the pure character and commitment it was created with.

The woman featured on the cover of this sixth Proletarijat release is the nurse Milja Marin. This was a household portrait in Partisan circles, called Kozarcanka - “woman from Kozara”. After the war, Milja said she had very little to smile about, nor did she want to carry a rifle. But she did it anyway. Our struggle thus demands, as the old Partisan song tells us.    

With this release, Sev Dah continues to celebrate those who dedicated their lives fighting fascism. Two old-school techno beasts as a nod to those who came before us, finishing with a futuristic space-traveller on the B-side as a reminder that the fight never ends.

Six years on since his latest appearance on the label’s main series, Stroboscopic Artefacts boss Luca Mortellaro, aka Lucy, returns with ‘Dyscamupia’ – an introspective, multisensory techno triptych revolving around the core sequence of Albert Camus’ classic existentialist novel, ‘The Stranger’. Also known as the ‘killing of an arab’, this pivotal moment in Camus’ seminal book – which also inspired The Cure their song ‘Killing An Arab’ back in the day, is here evoked through three variedly intense, deep and hypnotic techno variations – flexing from 120 to 130, onto 140 BPM – each of them translating a particular step in the author’s minute, focal-shifting depiction of the unknown man’s murder on the beach.   

Embodying Meursault for a minute, Jason Snell lends his voice to the narrator and his inner demons, casting a strange, ominous spell on the club and its crowd. Willing to explore and dig up further into the textural wealth and crucial warmth of organic sounds and synthetic treatments, Lucy made wise use of the binaural microphones technology during the vocals recording process, greatly enhancing the immersive force of his compositions to create thoughtful, dystopic narrative bubbles that stand in their own right.

The first number, ‘ Dyscamupia (Forward)’, happens before and right until the actual killing – hence time flowing at a metronomic, heartbeat-like tempo; the second cut ‘Dyscamupia (Pause)’ takes place right after the nameless man’s death, when the narrator enters a kind of existential ‘pause’ and a whole new flow of consciousness begins; the third sequence, ‘Dyscamupia (Backward)’, plumbs the depths of the action itself as played backwards, like an equally hazed-out and dizzying reminiscence of the sad encounter’s mechanism. Don’t let its seemingly conceptual framework fool you though, like most of his past output ‘Dyscamupia’ also aims to bring dancefloors to a steady simmer, whilst maintaining Lucy’s ascending momentum towards an all-round genre-busting, thought-provoking apex.

Title track ‘Mercurial Skin’ sees new life via Ellen Allien’s ‘Remix 2’ as the BPitch Control boss lays down eerie synths amongst bumping bass licks, whilst Reeko’s remix of ‘Brother’ ups the energy and channels the track’s intense vocals to deliver an ominous peak time offering. Benjamin Damage’s remix of ‘Mouais’ combines rich organic percussion and sweeping atmospherics, whilst Sodeyama’s hypnotic version of the track offers up a spellbinding five-and-a-half minute journey through pockets of space and serenity.

Nathaniel Young, is a multidisciplinary artist and producer based in Brooklyn, NY.

Born and raised amongst the cool greenery and porous fog of the Pacific Northwest, Young is a lifelong musician whose contemporary work explores techno through reductive and elemental processes, inverting its silhouette and navigating within its shadow.

Young, raised religious, was inspired by the power of community at a young age. Since then he has pushed against the inhibiting constraint of his upbringing, trading dogma and doctrine for empathy and candor.

In 2013, Young co-founded Blankstairs, a musical platform issuing cassettes and vinyl from electronic musicians from all over the world. After several releases under his own name and several aliases, his first album as Guilt Attendant arrives on Hospital Productions with the album ‘Suburban Scum’.

Presented on 2x12” ‘Suburban Scum’ is composed of eight groove-oriented, cold, introspective and sometimes violent techno, formatted in the unusual reverse composition of a descending narrative.
