Shady Hour

We're back to England, after our brief Acid trip to America on our previous release.
But if the land is different, and no 303 are lurking in the dark here, the mood and feel of XY-Me's new release is not miles away from the industrial darkness of the Pink Skull record.

John-Paul Denton's is one of those rare producers than manage to make his music sound edgy and sleek at the same time. His project XY-Me (working closely with the Newcastle producers of People Get Real) has already got us used to some seriously strong grooves and production and he's not letting us down here.

"Kirt Aim" and "Fearless" are two slices of brooding techno boasting mean grooves and cinematic textures, both carried by deep basses and an acute sense of what make people dance.

"Kirt Aim", the more energetic of the two tracks, is centred on a repetitive underground bass motif with rolling percussion reverberating over it, and short synth bursts creating a seriously claustrophobic vibe throughout.
"Fearless" slows the tempo down a bit as well as making things a bit brighter. The bass moves around the beat while clear synth lines resonate and bounce around giving the track a retro filmic "synth music" vibe. Filter movements, riding hats, and an interesting use of syncopation keep the track pace on the edge and make sure you'll stay on the dance floor.

John Paul says that they like to explore new directions on every release, citing Isolee and Caribou as influences for this one.This can be heard in the sense of movement of both pieces, developing subtly over low slung grooves, rolling percussion and very musical arrangements.

XY-Me's music has already found a strong support on the dance scene with the likes of Daniel Avery, Jacques Renault, Tim Paris and Justin Robertson, all playing their music, and this is not likely to change!

FAUVE ≠ KANÉ

CITIZENS! met, tragically, at a house party. Lawrence was trying to chat up the host, Tom was there trying to impress a date. They both failed miserably. But Tom did walk in on Lawrence and Mike sitting, drunk, and, alone, listening to music. They foolishly decided to form a band. So, thanks to a couple of providential female rejections CITIZENS! came into existence.

They say there are a few things that they all agree on: 
‘We actually enjoy hanging out with each other.’ (Martyn)
‘Some of us are too mal-adjusted to be able to do anything else, and the rest of us are getting there fast.’ (Thom)
‘There are two things that really, really piss us off: REVIVALISM and UGLY POP. Bands only make two kinds of music these days: Pointless revivals of subcultures past, or ugly, inhumane cynical pop.’ (Tom)
 ‘Pop is not a dirty word. It’s a holy one.’ (Mike)
‘Death to Guetta’ (Lawrence)
They thought that a band needed to come along with the guts to make imaginative pop music, but to do it with soul and integrity, 
In order to be able to make this music they had to make what Tom calls ‘some stupid decisions.’ ‘Stupid,’ because it means Tom is still working as a kitchen porter, Lawrence is still making coffees and Martyn is still on the dole.
They signed to an indie label who ‘wouldn’t tell us what to do,’ recorded the album in a house, played the whole thing live, got drunk, fought over lyrics and didn’t edit out the mistakes.
The name is a call to arms, a statement, a mark in the sand.

‘It’s us against the world,’ Lawrence says, ‘we make our own rules and we take them very seriously. But it works because we don’t take ourselves seriously while we do it.’

They treated recording like a game, an experiment. They asked questions that other bands weren’t asking, and mixed elements they hadn’t heard mixed before. Most importantly they wouldn’t allow themselves to mimic any particular moment from decades past.
Instead of REVIVALISM, they stand for ECLECTICISM.
Tom says ‘We all live in London. It was supposed to be an impression of the different experiences of living in the city. That was the plan, but now its finished all the songs seem to be about sex. I wonder what that says about us?’


Citizens! "True Romance"

Drumcode mark their landmark 100th release with a two-track EP that comes directly from the heart of the label’s operation. Just as with the label’s first release sixteen years ago, Adam Beyer positions himself at the controls, unleashing the shimmering ‘The Color Out Of Space’ with its euphoric melody riding on the back of nagging chords and booming kick. A product of Beyer’s studio collaboration with Ida Engberg, ‘Lovecraft’ takes its place on the b-side, cutting a trippy journey through distinctive chord patterns and undulating melodies that bounce around in the mix, underpinned by a heads-down groove.

Igor Volk returns with new single 'Labyrinth' -­ a follow up to his critically acclaimed 'Voice' debut...


'Labyrinth' is a heavier, more psychedelic affair, experimenting with possibilities of electric guitar sound over a driving krautrock rhythm. The song is a look into an entangled love story through the imagery of the ancient world.

Igor Volk is an artist-­musician from former USSR who started performing under his own name in London, in 2009. Having previously been involved in a variety of outfits, namely New Young Pony Club, he started writing original ideas, which soon began to take shape when Nick Phillips (The New Sins) came on board as producer. They are currently working on the debut album.

Musically the project is a journey across a diverse map of influences, from electronica and post-­punk (Japan, Talk Talk) to rock (ELP, King Crimson, Roxy Music) and jazz (Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell). An attentive listener could also hear a share of native folklore and classical music mixed in on a more subtle level, ex. phrasing -­ a combination born from his exposure to a variety of genres during childhood and the time spent studying music. The lyrics are often emotionally introspective and touch upon the themes of love, manipulation, identity and repetition as ingredients of daily life.

 The first single 'Voice' came out on the 18th of June 2012 and received encouraging reviews in the UK media. The video for 'Voice' was later nominated for Best UK Pop Music Video 2012.

 'Labyrinth' will be released on the 20th of May, 2013...
