ZZK Records Presents ZZK Sound Vol. 4

Born out of an underground Buenos Aires party and first launched in 2008, ZZK Records has spent more than a decade at the forefront of Latin American music, carving out space for artists putting a futuristic (and often electronic) spin on classic rhythms and folklore traditions. Along the way, the label spread across the globe and helped launch a few stars—Nicola Cruz, Chancha Vía Circuito, La Yegros and Son Rompe Pera among them—but ZZK’s search for new artists, sounds and perspectives is never complete.

ZZK Sound Vol. 4 brings together a fresh crop of talent from across Latin America, along with a pair of choice selections from veteran acts Maga Bo (Brazil) and Tremor (Argentina). Compiled by ZZK co-founder DJ Nim—the label’s original A&R (and Chancha Vía Circuito’s older brother), he’d actually taken a five-year hiatus from the project prior to 2020—the compilation’s origins can be traced back to the early days of the pandemic. As the world went into lockdown, he put out a call for submissions, and within three months, he’d received more than 1000 tracks. Nim literally listened to them all, whittling the pile down to his 11 favorites, and after hearing his selections, Grant C. Dull—another ZZK co-founder, who runs the label’s day-to-day operations—couldn’t believe his ears. Nim had done it again. There were no notes, and no changes to the tracklist. ZZK Sound Vol. 4 was quickly put into production.

While previous ZZK Sound compilations were primarily focused on the club, Vol. 4 follows a deeper, more introspective path. It’s not an ambient record—no ZZK release would be complete without drums—but the hypnotic rhythms here are far more concerned with the collective unconscious than the dancefloor.
Opening with spellbinding tracks from Pawkarmayta and QOQEQA—both hailing from Perú—the compilation immediately exudes a sort of ritual magic, calling upon both African and indigenous musical traditions while tapping into modern electronic music and a uniquely Latin sense of mysticism. Sebuky, a native Ecuadorian currently stationed in Barcelona, adds a bit more low-end heft to the proceedings, and that percussive weight continues through the similarly transportive contributions of Mangle (Colombia), Cruzloma (Ecuador) and Selvagia (Perú/Argentina via México).

Elsewhere, Yoyoyo transforms the cueca music of his native Chile, Akilin enlists American rapper Bomani Armah to help him explore Afro-Venezuelan traditions and Maga Bo’s “Cadê Zé”—the first Brazilian track to ever appear on a ZZK release—is a bass-loaded (albeit undeniably spiritual) banger. Galo Vermelho (Argentina) delivers a polyrhythmic lesson in digital folklore, following in the footsteps of Buenos Aires outfit Tremor—one of the first acts ever signed to ZZK—who close out the compilation with a rousing bit of almost Lynchian revelry.

At this point, few music fans need to be sold on the appeal of Latin music, but ZZK, which has been operating in this sphere since long before the genre became the “next big thing,” is dedicated to the idea that the potency of these sounds extends well beyond the pop charts. Hopping between continents and recontextualizing rhythmic lineages that date back centuries, ZZK Sound Vol. 4 is both an arresting snapshot of Latin America’s electronic avant garde and a thrilling preview of its next wave.

ZZK Sound Vol. 4 will be released on May 20th, 2022 on vinyl and streaming platforms.

Tremor + Micaela Chauque present the simple Corazón de agua (Fértil Discos, 2022)

The EP Corazón de agua (Fértil Discos, 2022) is a record that summarizes the musical exchange born spontaneously in Tilcara in 2007. Tremor and Micaela Chauque met during an event that took place there. They wasted no time, improvised a portable studio and began to record the first sparks of that immediate creativity. The famous song "Huella", first cut of Tremor´s album “Proa”  (2014), is also a product of that big bang. The conjunction of the two musical entities makes possible the neutral ground of fusion, a space that supposes the hybrid sound that results from the practice.

The EP “Corazón de Agua” is thus a serendipitous, spontaneous and celebratory release of shared friendship and hours of rich musical exchange and exploration. The singles of the EP feature the video release of specially recorded live sessions. Available from Friday, August 12, several remixes are also expected to be released. The traditional Tremor line-up (Leo Martinelli, Camilo Carabajal and Gerardo Farez) is joined on strings for this EP by Alex Musatov. The mixing is by Andrés Oddone and the mastering by Sebastián Cordovés. The cover artwork was designed by Flecha Volando.

About the single "Corazón de Agua".

This piece is an original composition, the heart of the EP, the most political song of the three that make up this release along with "Mi Cultura la copla" and "Florcita de Cardón". The lyrics expose a certain epic of valuing nature, the land, the Andean fauna and singing as a point of view and way of life. The importance of the own, of the original, resonates in the clear voice of Chauque, one of the most notorious representatives of contemporary Andean folklore. The string arrangements written by Leo Martinelli and performed by Alex Musatov are the main sound support, while the electronic elements appear in serious vibrations crouched in the landscape. A piece charged with heroic epic, as a sentinel of the natural landscape.

Tremor is a pioneer project in experimentation with Argentine folklore music and digital production techniques. Electro-tribal malambos, glitch chacareras, sachas with gypsy melodies, and even IDM huaynos are nicknames that some of Tremor's music could have. Leonardo Martinelli, (in production, guitar, charango and various other instruments) together with Gerardo Farez (keyboards and melodica) and Camilo Carabajal (bass drum) are members. With their energetic live show they have toured Europe and the United States and Canada, Brazil, Colombia and Chile.

Micaela Chauque is part of the new generation of musicians that breaks into popular music in this new millennium. She´s a singer, aerophonist, composer and has a degree in Argentine Folklore. He currently resides and produces his music in Tilcara (Jujuy). He made presentations at national festivals. Her album Jallalla received the 2019 Gardel Award for Best Female Artist Folklore Album. Micaela Chauque is currently recognized as an international NOA folklore artist. 

Fértil Discos is an independent label founded by El Remolón in 2014 that brings together artists from the South American electronic scene. From the publication of albums, compilations and event production, Fértil proposes a crossover space between Latin American popular music and electronic music in order to reread traditions and participate in the construction of being a contemporary Latino. Fertil has more more than thirty titles, El Camino de Leda stands out, a tribute to Leda Valladares and albums by Barda, El Remolón, Pol Nada or Jin Yerei and collaborations with artists such as Chancha Vía Circuito, Tremor, Uji and La Charo, among others.

Se trata de un registro discográfico que resume el intercambio musical que nació espontáneamente en Tilcara en el año 2007. Tremor y Micaela Chauque se conocieron en el marco de un evento que allí se llevara a cabo. No perdieron el tiempo, improvisaron un estudio portátil y comenzaron a grabar los primeros chispazos de esa creatividad inmediata. El célebre tema "Huella", primer corte del álbum Proa de Tremor (2014), es también producto de aquel big bang. La conjunción de las dos entidades musicales posibilita el terreno neutral de la fusión, un espacio que supone el sonido híbrido que resulta de la práctica. El EP Corazón de agua será entonces una edición casual, espontánea y celebratoria de la amistad compartida y las horas de rico intercambio y exploración musicales.

ZZK Records is proud to announce the long-awaited return of Tremor. Pioneers in mixing Latin American folklore with sound experimentation, the band have been going strong for over a decade, and they’re back with the release of the “Ave Reina Mora” EP: delicate, introspective and psychedelic. 

Leo Martinelli, Camilo Carabajal and Gerardo Farez surprise us again with another cut that rejects any kind of formula, exploring an innovative, sophisticated musical universe with highly visual and simulating compositions. There is a playfulness that runs throughout the record, evoking an interstellar lullaby, inspired by the fact that three members of the group had kids almost at the same time during the band’s hiatus. The project’s evolution can be seen in the renewal of a material that is still very much their own sound but one that takes on a new layer of sensitivity, perfectly balancing experimentation with charm. 

Once again Andrés Oddone is on the mixing desk while Sebastián Cordovés takes care of the mastering. Leo Martinelli takes the lead vocals on the five songs that make up this release. The cover art is by the talented Gisela Faure, capturing and summing up the theme of the record: a delicate organic and digital collage.

Seis años después del fallecimiento de Leda Valladares, y a casi dos de haber lanzado la convocatoria, Fertil Discos (Argentina) y Folcore (Barcelona) presentamos el tercer single de lo que será El Camino de Leda, un repaso por el cancionero que la gran música popular rescató del olvido, y que gana otra vida a partir de 12 temas grabados por una nueva generación de productores electrónicos y cantantes invitados.
Revisitar estos cantos desde la música electrónica es mucho más que agregarles una base: es buscar generar desde la nueva música y la tecnología, texturas y sonidos (muchas veces imposibles de lograr con instrumentos) que creen espacios diferentes para recibir esas voces, y también valerse de ritmos y cadencias que no sólo nos devuelven lo ancestral, sino que también lo vinculan a nuestra experiencia diaria en las ciudades modernas.
La clave afro incorporada por Tremor, las atmósferas psicodélicas de El Remolón, los coros de Shaman Herrera, las texturas ásperas y desarmadas de San Ignacio y la voz de Lauphan, el pulso industrial de Pol Nada... son sólo algunos de los ejemplos de un trabajo de investigación y reintepretación que busca y encuentra no tanto las características formales sino el sentimiento y la profundidad del canto con caja. Bárbara Silva, King Coya, Sofía Viola, Jin Yerei, Dat García, Jazmín Ezquivel, Barda, Celeste, Uji y Charo Bogarín (La Charo, de Tonolec) son los demás artistas que componen este proyecto, cuya edición digital se verá complementada por un vinilo doble, disponible desde el 1 de marzo de 2019.

Six years after Leda Valladares’ death, and almost two years after publishing our project, Fertil Discos (Argentina) and Folcore (Barcelona) present the third single of our coming album El Camino de Leda, revisiting the music she recorded and saved from being lost forever. 12 songs, recorded by electronic producers and guest singers, will bring her work and legacy back into life. 
Using electronic music in order to revisit these songs means much more than just adding a base to the vocals: it means to use new technologies to create textures and sounds (many times impossible to be created with instruments) that conform a new type of space to host the vocals, and also to use rythms and beats which not only bring us the ancestral music back, but also link it to our daily experience in the modern cities.
The afro percussions that Tremor used in their track, El Remolon’s psychedelic atmospheres, Shaman Herrera’s vocal works, the rough and deconstructed textures of San Ignacio and Lauphan’s song, Pol Nada’s industrial beat -are just a few examples of this project’s investigation and reinterpretation, which aims not only to reproduce the formal characteristics of the canto con caja, but also to find the emotions and the deepness involved in it. Bárbara Silva, King Coya, Sofía Viola, Jin Yerei, Dat García, Jazmín Ezquivel, Barda, Celeste, Uji y Charo Bogarín (La Charo, de Tonolec) are the rest of the artists involved in this project, to be published digitally, and available in vinyl from March, 2019.

De los Andes a los Himalayas es una forma de resumir lo que pasa en El Camino de Leda, un tributo a Leda Valladares, un compendio de varios temas que van desde el canto con caja a la electronica mapuche y la incursión de sonidos orientales. Chancha via Circuito se amalgama con Shaman Herrera, Savia Andina se pone techno y hasta Britney Spears se pone en clave orgánica. Una forma de llevar los cantos ancestrales a la cultura pop y a la electronica rebajada.

From the Andes to the Himalayas is a way to resume the experience of El Camino de Leda, un tributo a Leda Valladares, with a unique combination of songs including canto con caja, mapuche electronic music, eastern sounds, and more.  Shaman’s voice blend into Chancha Via Circuito’s deep bases, Savia Andina goes techno, and even Britney Spears comes in in an organic format. This mixtape is an attempt to bring ancestral chants to our universe of pop culture and slow electronics.

Tremor is a trio from Buenos Aires, that combines rhythms and sound across genre borders, fitting component parts of varying tradition together in eloquent symmetry. The artist breaks sound barriers across South America and presents their digital folklore tracks to a new, global audience.

Tremor researches folklore traditions by region and bridges generations, geography and genre to produce his signature style. Their sound is equal parts electronic music and native drum and owes as much to anthropology as it does to popular music.

Tremor executes folklore melody through a digital context. Layers of rhythm are fortified with modern synth loops and paired with timeless Andean flute, strings and drum samples for evocative hybrids.

Leaded by Leonardo Martinelli (composer and producer), the band is completed by Camillo Carbajal (bombo leguero) and Gerardo Farez (synthesizers, melodica and bombo leguero).
