A Small Memory

This is the fourth and final movement of "Jazz Movements", a piece that explores jazz styles in an orchestral setting. "Grooves" is inspired by funk and fusion, featuring interlocking rhythms and driving energy.

Grooves

This is the live performance from April 28th at SALT, Beyoglu. Here's a little background. Since this was my first live performance as Sumatran Black I wanted to reduce the stress levels as much as possible and simplify the live work flow. Essentially the core of the soundtrack was composed and recorded prior to the performance (you can find that version on Bandcamp- https://sumatranblack.bandcamp.com/album/a-page-of-madness-a-sumatran-soundtrack).

I divided up the score into chunks or "pages" that I could cue whilst the movie was playing via Ableton Live. In addition to this I created a large array of send/insert effects that I could manipulate during the performance. I think there were 8 main effects sends that did a variety of strange things. Once the main compositions were completed, the design of these effects sends was the most time consuming aspect of the project.

Some of the effect manipulations were very carefully planned out and timed to the exact second (if I played it right ) and I also allowed myself some areas where I could improvise.

Also, there was a technical issue with Page 1 of the live recording, half was missing, and so I recreated that Page in my studio as best as I could. Live, one take and no edits.

Bruce Brubaker - Keyboard Study 2, Version 3 (Arandel remix)

From Far Away was commissioned and premiered by pianist Ana Glig and was originally conceived as a sort of bittersweet celebration of her home country, Georgia. In keeping with this intent, all the motives in both movements are derived from two Georgian folk tunes. The first movement draws from the song Tsinkaro and, much like the original song, the movement sets up a repetitive motive that is then elaborated on over time. The high ornamental figures are intended to be somewhat indicative of the beautiful, improvisatory style of singing found in many Georgian folk songs.
The second movement is based on the folk song Mkhedruli. This movement more closely resembles the source material and uses the running thirds found in the song extensively. The different sections in the movement align chronologically with the sections they are drawn from and the movement finishes with an off beat summation of the material in 7/8 time.

From Far Away (Movements I & II) - Ana Glig, Piano

This prelude first grew out of a desire of mine to write a work that was heavily based in triadic harmony. I had been, for a lengthy period leading up to this, writing pieces that were mostly non-triadic in harmonic language, and felt a sort of innate need to write something in a dramatically different aesthetic than my other pieces. I decided to write a piece that was post-minimalist in nature, sharing its aesthetic with minimalism, but not aligning with the ethos of minimalist composing. Instead, the piece still exploits elements such as directionality of phrase and cadential movements. In the absence of functional harmony, however, movement of notes, color, interplay of independent arpeggiation, and contour lend the music its phrasing.
