Tricky feat. Francesca Belmonte - New Stole

"SPINNING AWAY is a very easy one for me to talk about, because it has a feature that I like a lot, and that I have used before as well. I like very much to have contrasts of speed. For instance I like to have very very fast staccato rhythms, chopped-up rhythms, which very liquid vocals running over the top of them. Maybe the best example of this is not on one of my records, but on the Donna Summer song "I Feel Love" with Georgio Moroder playing. The synthesizer part on that is very very technological and mechanical, Kraftwerk almost, but her singing over it is just like a beautiful liquid feeling going on over the top. Anyway, I have that kind of feeling in Spinning Away, something of two very opposing qualities: a rhythm that is staccato, off-balance slightly. If you listen to the way the drums begin on that song, they have a strange, off-balance feeling. Their sound is crisp. The vocals on the other hand, and the violins are not played in the same mood, they're in almost a different musical universe. They float on top of this sea of action, you know, this sea of activity. And the violins play in a different time signature: dam dam dam dam dada over taka tak taka taka taka tak taka taka... Well, actually I'm not very good at talking about that particular piece of music (laughs)." -- Brian Eno, interviewed by Michael Engelbrecht.

Klaus Dinger and I recorded Hallogallo and the other tracks of the first NEU! album with Conny Plank, the legendary producer, in late 1971. We did not ask a record company to pay the studio rent because we wished to remain completely independent but we had little money and therefore we were forced to finish the recordings in only 4 nights. We didn´t rehearse at home or even discussed our ideas before we entered the studio. Klaus and I started out from scratch and each of us only had visions of the music that we wanted to produce. In the first step we recorded basic tracks together, with Klaus playing drums and myself on guitar or bass. We worked like action painters when in the next step we individually added overdubs. It was thrilling and also frightening because there was absolutely no certainty that we would end up with an album and, if so, would find a record company for it. I guess we were very fortunate. Recording overdubs for Hallogallo I suddenly had a wonderful feedback on my guitar with which I could play thoses long drifting notes that hover like clouds over our basic tracks. Conny Plank contributed a lot of creativity to the recording process, he picked up our intentions with great sensitivity and was a wizzard at the mixing desk. Hallogallo is one of my favourite tracks of all time. The minimalistic drone and the optimistic fast-forward movement of Hallogallo is still close to my heart. In my view it is one of the best examples of my collaboration with Klaus Dinger.

Taken from the forthcoming new album 'False Idols' released on False Idols in association with !K7 Records internationally on 27.05.13 and in the USA on 28.05.13.

Tricky is back. Back with a new album "False Idols". 

The first single, 'Does It', sets the tone. It's a brooding throb of muscular bass, moody handclaps and Tricky's dystopian lyrics. It's ominous, a dark vision of the world that asks why people aren't more angry about the status quo. "People will either get it or not get it," says Tricky. "It's meant to be felt as well as heard - it's primal. Whether people get it or not, the fact is, compared to the over-produced, over marketed stuff out there, it's a wake-up call."

'Does It' is accompanied by a hard-hitting video, which debuted on the Rolling Stone website in March. The imagery is of social unrest, crowds clashing with the police and a troubled Tricky murmuring his lines. It's clearly a political statement. As is the name of his record label, like the album called False Idols. 'Does It' is the first release. 

It's a new start for Tricky. Not that he cares if it works, or if people like it. "I don't give a fuck," he says. "This new album I'll stand behind every track. I don't care whether people like it. I'm doing what I want to do, which is what I did with my first record. That's what made me who I was in the beginning. If people don't like it, it don't matter to me because I'm back where I was."

Back where he belongs.
