... no rhythms to speak of, most people can't dance to this music, so I consider these tracks and others like them the crown jewel of all my playlists.  There is this audacity, this freedom, and the futility... yes, the futility of making music that one cannot dance to, that's the best part.  I have found that considering the pressures coming from all sides, each and every day, for everyone of us, toward meaning and efficiency, that to go in the exact opposite direction on purpose is sublime. So happy to welcome Joseph Kamaru (aka KMRU)to the series. Based in Nairobi, Joseph has been releasing music and participating in the local scene there for the past few years, and is a regular performer at Nyegenyege festival. His music emits a deep and dynamic emotionality but is equally as focused on the sound design of its environment. This mix he's made reflects many moods but each one is meditated on just enough before fluidly moving to the next.

Motion Cast Vol. 57: KMRU

Justine Perry is a Berlin-based techno DJ. Attracted by the Berlin club scene, her sets are influenced by dark and deep techno, bringing the public to a hypnotic experience. Setting up in Berlin, she starting her collaboration with new artistic projects like Art Bei Ton and helped those events to feature more female artists.

As part of the LGBT+ community, Justine embraces the need of getting a more safe and diverse scene, involving more women and queer artists, as well as fighting against any form of discrimination.

Established herself in Europe, she played in prestigious venues, such as Rex Club in Paris, Khidi in Tbilisi, Griessmühle, or Tresor in Berlin, as well as some festivals, like Forte Festival in Portugal and soon Instytut Festival in Poland.

In 2020, in collaboration with Petit Astronaute, Justine Perry released her first track « Swell » out on DNC Limited.

From Los Angeles, California, Jevvf is a DJ, curator, and hypnotic techno enthusiast. He combines varying sounds in his sets from hypnotic, drone, raw, and textural roots. In this mix, you will find a range of these elements spanning from the deeper, atmospheric styles in contrast to the harder hitting, energetic styles. Jevvf also created r/hypnotech on Reddit in order to create a platform for individuals to stay engaged between listeners, artists, and record labels.

“For Scott Zacharias’s No Way Back: Streaming From Beyond set we asked him to bridge the 24 hour continuous NWB into the Outer Space room, coming on directly after Mozhgan’s deeply mesmerizing set. At the physical event, No Way Back has 2 rooms. The No Way Back room, and the Outer Space room. Scott has a unique function unseen anywhere else in the world, coming on at dawn in the Outer Space room after a night of ambient and experimental music, taking an audience that is often laying on the mats on the floor in a blissed out state, and elevating them first in mind, and then in body as he channels his own freeform take on the sleaze tradition. He starts formless and then begins to bring in compelling and psychedelic gems, inching the tempo up so slightly over the course of many hours until the whole floor is pulsating in an under 110 bpm heaven. After nights of major psychedelic experiences, this allows for a kind of mental freedom. This is so crucial, the weekend is a marathon, and you come in to hear Scott to be recharged, it is food for the mind and soul, as he goes from ambient to everywhere you need to be. For the stream, we asked our favorite dharma bum to do this in reverse, since it was a one room stream, starting with NWB and ending in Outer Space, he began with the deep groove and slowly disintegrates it into oblivion, leaving you in Outer Space as only he can. We asked for a 3 hour set and got 4 hours, and we couldn’t edit one out, it's just too pure.” — BMG

No Way Back: Streaming From Beyond

A 36+ hour take on No Way Back, with 24 hours of the No Way Back room residents and 12+ hours of the Outer Space room immediately following. An excess of the mindmelting wormhole dance experience followed by many hours of floating in space and beyond. When we considered podcasting some sets, we decided to just release them all, one week at a time, in an order different than their original broadcast, with the concept of bringing further ideas with the continuum to light.

For us the toughest moment of the pandemic shut down was the thought that we could not gather on Memorial Day weekend for our annual rite of No Way Back. We need our community now more than ever, to connect and to feel free, in a world of shifting real and unreal realities, sequestered in isolation, how can we get together? Time feels different now, we have more patience for everything, so we applied that space for exploration to the sets at No Way Back, extending them to 3 hours so the DJs can fully explore their ideas.

The Electrifyin' Mojo would say "if you reach the end of your rope, just tie a knot and don’t let go" and this stream and podcasts are our knot. This was the first ever NWB without a defined space, without the transformational art of Amber Gillen and crew, let's hope we can get together in the future safely. Grab a little bit of netting or a parachute, turn on some red lights, move into another dimension. Please stay safe and live to dance another day.

Daniel Rincón is a Colombian-Canadian artist known for his techno productions under the name NAP, as well as Ambien Baby, his collaborative project with D. Tiffany. But it's with his Isla label that Rincón has made the largest impact. Starting as a tape imprint in 2016 with releases from You're Me, Big Zen and ZDBT, Isla has since evolved into a full-on vinyl label releasing psychedelic electronic music from Canada and beyond, reaching back into the past with archival material from Exquisite Corpse and new music from Michael Red and Rincón himself.

DECENNIUM20 - Giant Swan (Mannequin, Timedance)

The 20th edition of our DECENNIUM series comes courtesy of one of the brightest flames in the world of Electronic Music in recent years; UK duo, Giant Swan (Mannequin, Timedance).

"Giant Swan is the brainchild of Robin Stewart & Harry Wright; an acerbic marriage of energised, aggressive dance music, quaking bass and hypnotic electronic noise. Having built a formidable reputation for their hi-octane improvised performances, relentless international touring and a succession of acclaimed EPs on respected imprints such as Whities, Timedance and Mannequin, 'Giant Swan' sees the pair stepping things up significantly, with a full-length musical statement that bristles with the galvanising energy for which they're known while introducing a fresh depth, range and sonic nuance to the equation.

Named after a beloved track by screamo overlords the Blood Brothers, Giant Swan was originally conceived as a side project from their roles as guitarists in the band The Naturals, with formative influences such as My Bloody Valentine and Lightning Bolt being distilled over time with inspiration from the varied and always vibrant local music scene in Bristol. From dub soundsystem teachings at the Trinity Centre and Black Swan or the fiercely experimental early transmissions of friends in the Young Echo collective, Giant Swan have grown to take their place as one of the most singular and determined groups to emerge from the UK underground in many years.

Whilst not belabouring the point, this outsider status is important to note: despite rousing audiences at festivals such as Unsound and Berlin Atonal, and sharing stages with the likes of Objekt and Actress, Giant Swan have always approached their craft in an entirely different way to most of their contemporaries. Musically this is evident in Stewart’s contorted vocal textures married with shards of abused guitar noise that cut through the four to the floor heaters, but also comes across in their conceptual approach - be it onstage, facing each other whilst flanked by walls of amplifiers or in interviews, where the pair have consistently stressed the need for inclusive clubbing environments based on equality, enjoyment and an ongoing, unflinching critique of the culture.

At the same time they’ve been subverting expectations on the international techno circuit, they’ve also had one foot in a more experimental camp, equally at home playing alongside Moor Mother (for whom they’ve produced a track on the forthcoming Analog Fluids of Sonic Black Holes album) at leftfield arts festivals as they are sending it in at legendary clubs like Berghain and Tresor. This year they’ve also made tentative steps towards putting themselves in front of a more mainstream audience; with two appearances at the revered Glastonbury Festival, a high profile support slot at the Royal Albert Hall with indie heroes The Horrors (who they have also recently remixed) and a specially commissioned live set for BBC Radio 1."

This time is Corell showing us his art and  techniques. Roman Kutnov is a sound producer, composer and sound artist from Moscow, Russia. During the last decade he worked as a solo artist as well as being involved in collaborative projects from indie-rock bands to improv and contemporary academic music collectives. Having an art background Roman works with artists, performers and choreographers providing music for multimedia installations, dance and theatrical performances.
In 2017 he started Corell - a cross-genre project with the focus on techno and
ambient music. In his works he attempts to find a distinctive sound through combining polymetric beats, atmospheres, textures, mutating and morphing loops and rhizomatic composition structures.
