Boy Next Door returns to Light my Fire after excursions on Katermukke and a recent remix for Ryan Dupree. Here, on ‘Dirty Love’, he refines his signature style of jacking drums, nostalgic rave sounds and punishing grooves even further. While the first track, ‘Coming Down’ is build around a dominant bass-line and vocal samples, it’s the piano that drops in around the half-way mark that really steals the show. It may or may not reference a classic 90s house tune. In ‘Dirty Love’ sharp hi-hats and an ominous rave bass-line are the bedding for elastic synth sounds. The final track, ‘Get Up’, is a downbeat master class in disco-funk: a chugging groove and electric guitars make for a great finish.

Release: Black Feather Series #01, 70’s Born EP

Originally released on our sister label, Black Bridge, this EP kickstarted Black Feather Radio, and thus this label, The Black Feather Files.

Here Black Bridge Recordings introduce their Black Feather Series, a proposed suite of releases focusing on the more DJ oriented side to Black Bridge’s downtempo eclectica. There’s no one better to kick things off than Maasa, a new alias of celebrated soulful house producer Matthew Bandy. Behind the helm of Deep House Souldiers, Bandy is responsible for a number of top tunes, including his “This Is Why We Dance” single which found itself on Ben Watt’s bestselling Buzzin’ Fly Vol. 1 compilation. Not content to stay with one style Bandy created Maasa to explore more eclectic, mid-tempo, disco-based endeavors. The 70’s Born EP is Maasa’s inaugural expression.

With this EP Bandy’s Maasa project attempts to capture the sounds of his early inspiration, mainly the funk and disco music from the 70’s and early 80’s. Instruments of the era were used including Rhodes piano, clarinet, and early Roland Juno and Arp synthesizers. The feeling is authentic but brushed with a contemporary feel; groovy for dancefloors of the present day. This is exemplified by the lead track “Walking On The Moon.” Fitted with a strong 80’s funk bass and rhythm track the cut also sports a rich vibe with spacey melodic touches that will easily entice today’s nu-disco DJs.
Many of these same sonic elements are blended and given a more uptempo backdrop in the following track, “Sound FX.” Disco strings, horns, and funky synth action tie together a resolute groove handily winning over deeper dancefloors. “70’s Born” is another uptempo wonder adding a more percussive backdrop into the mix. Bass melodies guide the way as Maasa’s now familiar string, rhodes, and synth embellishments accurately recall some of the production hallmarks of the decade in the title. Finally, “Walking On The Moon” is revisited with a crafty electric boogie remix by Brooklyn’s In Flagranti (Codek Records). The original’s heavy bass presence is the anchor as the inventive In Flagranti crew inject dubby percussion, large synth pads, and cosmic elements into their offering.

70's Born

This latest release features Denver artist Time For Trees, led by sonic experimenter Joshua Smith. The act has gained quite a following through acclaimed releases on Archipel and Emote as well as his own Rope Swing Cities and Make Mistakes labels. In addition, Joshua is a member of Les Freres Courvoisier who have released well-received singles on labels such as Wolf + Lamb, and is one of the founders of Colorado’s Communikey Festival of Electronic Arts. 

Time For Trees’ dossier in the Black Feather Files includes “Sad Livin’ In The City,” a track self-described as being about “missing friends.” But with the addition of forlorn vocals by Layden Bryant the story gets a bit deeper … and weirder: “The song sounds like a longing lamentation of lost love, but truly, it’s about being stuck in a city during a zombie outbreak and trying to escape.” Gentle Rhodes-like keys, a laid-back, galloping rhythm, and a pulsating low end set the scene as glaring, but almost distant, noises beam overhead. It’s a truly original tune that succeeds in conveying a little mini-movie for the headspace. 

For an evocative remix treatment the label enlisted Brooklyn musician and visual artist David Last who has previously contributed tunes to Staubgold, (un)foundsound, and his own Konque imprint. David captures the city vibe with a jazzy streetlamp drum beat, plucked bass guitar, and infectious saxophone melodies and harmonies. One can imagine the zombies shuffling across the dance-floor through the fog, meeting in front of the DJ booth, and raising their decaying hands in mutual appreciation. 

“Sad Livin’ In The City” is a masterful treat that is sure to stand out in the midst of DJ sets, radio shows, or home stereo selections. Be on the lookout for Time For Trees’ recently released second album on Archipel, as well as more timely offerings from the Black Feather Files.
