Ireland-based Peter Broderick returns with his new EP The Wind That Shakes The Bramble on September 10. Expanding on last year's Blackberry album, Peter pays homage to Irish poet Robert Dwyer Joyce’s ballad The Wind That Shakes The Barley. It sees Broderick share additional work from the Blackberry sessions, as well as a beautiful two-part rework from Bing & Ruth (4AD) and the 22-minute title track. 

Viewing the blackberry plant as a symbol of resilience, the song is an expansive and meditative ambient odyssey, a balm for the baffling chaos of the current era.

“It weaves itself all through our countryside, playing an important role in holding the soil together, and also makes its way into our cities, proliferating even in such hyper urban environments as London. And while most modern people have lost the ability to identify the wild plants growing around us, the Blackberry remains a commonly foraged plant all around the globe.”

Ahead of the release of their much anticipated 10th Anniversary Remastered Edition of A Matter of Life… 2021, Penguin Cafe share the remastered studio version of the album's closing piece Coriolis, along with a video of Arthur Jeffes performing a 2021 live rendition of the song on the dulcitone in his second home in Tuscany.

The remastered track, a duet between Arthur Jeffes on piano and Oli Langford on violin, incorporates the aesthetics of the original PCO, seasoned into a confident and redefined style, maintaining that quintessentially English sound, but adding a fresh direction and a sense that they are evolving into something new and very much their own.

"The version of Coriolis that ended up on the record is actually a mix of several takes we recorded on a very slow, cosy day in the studio. It had been raining for days and Oli, our violinist, and I had the basic idea and played around with it. In the end the initial recordings sounded so beautiful I just cut together the best parts to make it into the song we have here. It always makes me think of rain."

Penguin Cafe will be performing songs from the album live at the Barbican Hall tonight, on March 22, the day this single gets released, followed by a UK festival tour this summer including The Great Escape. The album will be released via Erased Tapes on April 29.

Penguin Cafe are back with a lovingly produced 10th anniversary reissue of their debut album, titled A Matter of Life… 2021. Besides being completely remastered and pressed on vinyl for the very first time, the record also features a brand new 2021 recording of lead single Harry Piers, a song commemorating Arthur Jeffes’ late father and PCO founder Simon Jeffes.

“I originally wrote Harry Piers to play at my dad‘s memorial service 24 years ago, and I played it at the end of pretty much every gig (and soundcheck) we’ve done since, so I’ve probably played it hundreds if not thousands of times since we originally released A Matter of Life. So when we decided to reissue the album, Robert and I both felt it would be fun to record an up-to-date version of this song, because it has changed over time and it continues to evolve. So while this is still very much the same tune, I think it has a lot more nuance and detail that reflect the years that have passed since 2011,” Arthur explains.

“When I asked Art to dig out the original recordings in order to give them the sonic treatment they deserved, it just so happened that the session file for the most important piece was missing — his ode to his father. A brief moment of panic was shortly followed by the realisation that this might be a sign, a chance to record the glorious new form this song has naturally developed into over the years. I had this strong memory of seeing Arthur genuinely reach out to Simon through the piano, which had to be captured for others to witness,” adds co-producer Robert Raths.

The remastered 10th anniversary edition of A Matter of Life… will be available digitally, on 12” vinyl and on CD from April 29.

For "Going Home", Tristan Eckerson's first full length album in two years, the composer/pianist decided to shy away from his normal compositional approach, opting instead for an album of completely improvised pieces for solo piano. Recorded by Tristan with the unique sound of the Una Corda piano, the stream of consciousness tracks evoke the sounds of Tristan's influences, including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Tigran Hamasyan, and Ballaké Sissoko, and hover between the worlds of classical and jazz.

The Gymnopédies, published in Paris starting in 1888, are three piano compositions written by French composer and pianist Erik Satie.

The melodies of the pieces use deliberate, but mild, dissonances against the harmony, producing a piquant, melancholy effect that matches the performance instructions, which are to play each piece "painfully", "sadly" or "gravely".

‘In mid-December 2010 I was on a holiday in China when I received an email from Sam Levinson about the film. We got on the phone at like 4 in the morning Beijing time and ended up talking all through the night, instantly connecting. He told me that they had been listening to my music while making the film, so the film was already very influenced by my music. However, it was not until Ellen Barkin – the beautiful force that she is – had pestered the producers for a week, calling them every day about how I am the right one for this film, that they finally gave in. The only catch was that it had to be done two weeks later, in the first week of January. So I ended up scoring nonstop all throughout Christmas, making my mother mad in the process.’ - Ólafur Arnalds

Born in the suburban Icelandic town of Mosfellsbær, a few kilometres outside of Reykjavík, the 24-year old composer has always enjoyed pushing boundaries with both his studio work and his live-shows. Two years after the release of his acclaimed Erased Tapes debut, ‘The Transition’, Californian singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist David Allred returns with a solo piano perspective on the album, aptly titled Felt The Transition — out December 18.

"Felt The Transition is a new minimalist solo piano perspective on my experimental chamber folk album previously released in 2018, called The Transition. This music is reinterpreted on my 114 year old upright piano which was very kindly donated to me by my friend Adam Selzer who previously ran a recording studio in Portland called Type Foundry. This piano is very sentimental to me as it was used by a handful of my favorite musicians on their albums over the past 20 years, namely Peter Broderick’s ‘How They Are‘ and ‘Two Balloons’.” — David Allred

Tristan Eckerson is an American Pianist, Composer, and Producer currently based in Santa Marta, Colombia.  In the past five years he has released six full length albums and more than two album's worth of singles, both independently and with 1631 Recordings (Nils Frahm, Dustin O'Halloran, Hauschka), A Remarkable Idea (Bloc Party, Benoît Pioulard, Maxïmo Park, Robot Koch), Mellotron Records, 7K! Records, and Sonder House.  He has toured through North America and Europe and has composed music for award winning commercials, short films, and web series.  His music has received multiple sync placements in television and film, and has been streamed over forty million times worldwide.  In 2022 Tristan contributed a track to the Piano Day Compilation, released by German label Leiter and featuring artists such as Olafur Arnalds, Chilly Gonzales, and Balmorhea.

Having graduated from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California with a Master's degree in Music Production and Sound Design for Visual Media, Tristan handles all aspects of the production of his music independently- from writing, recording, mixing, and mastering through to artwork and cover art design.  Releasing compositions for solo piano on an almost monthly basis for the past few years, in January of 2023 Tristan also released his debut album under his Ambient project Purple Decades.  "Journey Test", released by Portland based label Beacon Sound, was well received by fans and the press, and was featured in the Best Ambient on Bandcamp: February, 2023.  Purple Decades' follow up full length "Fraction of Centuries" will be released on Beacon Sound on September 6th, 2024.
