Bird of Prey (Part 1)

“Maisha” is the Swahili word for life.

This album to me expresses the feeling of embracing life in all its forms, with its different perspectives, moods, sounds, energies. In contrast to previous work, which was somewhat more reflective, this album was made with a lot of creative energy and drive. When starting each track I felt like I was overflowing with ideas that I had to try out and get down as soon as possible. Sometimes the inspiration would come from listening to various new albums on Bandcamp from around the world: jazz, African folk, hip-hop, Neo-soul, funk, afrobeat. Other times the inspiration would come simply from biking around Los Angeles and taking in sights and sounds from different parts of the city.

I think there can easily be pressure when making to album for it to feel as though each album has to embody a sophisticated concept or make some specific statement. Albums expressing abstract concepts or political or social statements are important for the musical culture, to be sure; but music is also an expression of where the artist is at spiritually, emotionally, and creatively at a certain point in time. This is what Maisha means for me. It represents the joys, excitements, and bursts of creative feeling, as well as the tranquility and nostalgia that I felt at times while making it. With this work, as with my previous work, I am ever seeking to defy genre. Of course, it’s clear that downtempo and trip-hop music form the backbone of what I am doing, but I am also trying to challenge those labels all the time by exploring different rhythms, scales, arrangements, and instruments.

I hope this album helps you find inspiration to express yourself or explore in whatever ways are possible or speak to you in your life, as it did for me.

Season Two is the new compilation album from Loci Records, curated by downtempo favourite Emancipator. The collection is a wondrous explosion of vibrant sonic textures enriched with soulful and emotive pieces from notable Loci alumni artists, as well as several new additions, heralding what's to come from the label.
A contemporary look at where downtempo stands today in electronic music, Season Two weaves in and out of various flavours ranging from instrumental hip-hop, lo-fi beat, ambient IDM, left-field electronica, and more.

A sonic alchemist, Murge weaves the eclectic and the electric to create dancefloor-centric beats that fill the space and lift the crowd. Inspired by travels through eastern Spain, Here We All Are is a cohesive collection of downtempo tracks, filled with fresh, earthy bass and neoteric instrumentals. Unorthodox sounds intertwine to create an expansive aural journey; one of connection and elevation. Pulling from across a variety of genres, Murge’s influences are wide ranging and free flowing; from the Cosmic era of disco to psychedelic jazz, from Latin rhythms fused with the elasticity and inclusiveness of world-inspired music to field recordings of ambient samples, captured during his own global travels.

'Here We All Are' was primarily produced at Murge’s studio The Cabin, with additional recording and mixing taking place at Burning Rainbow Studios in Victoria BC and The Warehouse in Vancouver BC, followed by mastering by Grammy nominated Shawn Hatfield at Audible Oddities. Influenced by the live instrumentals of Bonobo and Khruangbin, Murge has collaborated with some of BC’s most talented vocalists and multi-instrumentalists to create a full, world-inspired sound. First track ‘Reach Out’ is an uplifting dance floor groove reminiscent of sundowners at Cafe Del Mar; all languorous laid back beats peppered with inspiriting live flute. Lead single ‘Can’t Hurt Me Now’, featuring vocals by Sierra Lundy, is rich with moody dance floor energy and warm textures.

No stranger to packed dance floors or epic stages, Murge has entranced crowds at some of North America’s most well respected electronic festivals (Shambala, Bass Coast). A world class DJ and skilled producer, he has also shared stages with Bonobo, DJ Shadow, Flying Lotus, Hot Chip, Pete Rock, Kid Koala, De La Soul, Wu Tang Clan and Charles Bradley. With collaboration and creativity in mind, Murge has worked with Talib Kweli and Blackalicious, and has featured on remixes for Tegan & Sara, alongside Four Tet, Toro Y Moi and Holy F**k.

A longtime captain of the dance floor, Murge presents Here We All Are as a fresh offering of inspired global consciousness and transformative connectivity. 2020 is shaping up to be an expansive new chapter in Murge’s story.
