The Merin VA series turns four with another quartet of quality on Renaissance Records. So wütend schäumen die Fluten der Ozeane, dass sich selbst die erfahrensten SeefahrerInnen in einem unüberschaubaren Heer gieriger Wellen-Ungeheuer wähnen, die ihnen mit großen Mäulern entgegenfauchen und nach dem Leben trachten.

Da macht sich der mutigen Matrose Ewan Rill aus dem östlichsten Norden auf den beschwerlichen Weg ins Land der Meeronaut*innen. Dort, so erzählt man sich, werde die Frühjahrssonne schon bald der winterlichen Isolations-Void ein Ende bereiten. Mit einer tief-durchdringenden Bassline bahnt sich der entschlossene Seemann auf seinem wendigen Kahn „Sophistica" schließlich seinen Weg durch die tobende See, bis er auf dem Höhepunkt der melodisch ansteigenden Spannung den Kampf gegen die Elemente für sich entscheiden kann. Ins gleiche Fass schlägt sein Freund Van Did, der mit seinem Remix ebenfalls die Wellen tanzen lässt.

Nach der stürmischen Nacht versöhnen die Strahlen der aufgehenden Sonne Seemann und Wasser, was sich in der harmonisch-wiegenden Melodie und dem gleichmäßig-tanzenden Beat von „Soul Tribe" und seiner Neuinterpretation von Yonsh äußert.

„Why Us" bringt den Kahn schließlich mit seinen minimalen Rhythmen in den herbeigesehnten Hafen - pünktlich zum Beginn einer Zeit nach der Isolation.

Outside traditional paths these driving grooves and polyphonic structures take the adventure seeking dancer to Dionysian highs and places never been before.

The Huli are believed to have laid down roots in Papua New Guinea as far back as 45,000 years ago. Most of the Huli people are from the town of Tari, and many still live according to the traditional ways. “The Huli men are famous for their unique custom of creating and wearing impressive wigs decorated with feathers. They also wear bright facial paint in red, yellow and white — colors originally chosen to strike fear into their enemy in times of conflict. Nowadays, they usually wear them to sing and dance.”. The so-called Wigmen make their wigs out of their own hair and weave them with feathers from the island’s 700 bird species. Each feather carries its own symbolic meaning (such as strength and courage). “The forest in which we live is essential to us. It provides for all our needs, it is sacred, and I would do anything in my power to protect it,” writes Mundiya Kepanga, a 53-year-old Huli Wigman, “I hope that by helping people to better understand my culture, they will also respect our environment.”                                                                                                                    This is the new Shango Records compilation entitled “A Wigmen Town Called Tari”.
