US artist Danny Daze, out of Miami, has long been affiliated with the more electronic side of dance music. From the early days in the electro scene and more abstract forms of techno, the Omnidisc boss has covered a lot of musical ground since then. Helping to reimagine the underground landscape, Danny was pivotal in the early 2010s club sound with releases on Hot Creations, Ellum Audio, and Kompakt. He soon turned his attention back to the obscure side of the dancefloor and IDM. As much a music lover and dancer as he is an artist, he knows exactly what works on the dancefloor and his recent album “::BLUE::” on his own Omnidisc imprint exemplifies this ethos. Que Sakamoto is a musician and producer From Tokyo, Japan. He is known for his eclectic blend of diverse electronic music styles, as well as his use of vintage equipment and instruments in his productions. His DJ sets are always a surprise, because he caters his performances for the crowd in each country he visits. He never repeats the same vibe, always tending towards weird, interesting music, as this is how he expresses his Japanese identity. In one go, he can take the crowd from disco to garage to dub, even to trance and experimental breakbeat.

When Ballan lands on a label, it’s rarely by accident. The globe-hopping producer has a knack for weaving together the raw energy of Electro, the swing of UK Garage, and the cheeky irreverence of House into tracks that sound as spontaneous as they are deliberate. With releases on Bliss, Sucre Discs, Non Stop Rhythm, Howl and his own imprint Phlex Recs, Ballan has carved out a corner of the underground where grooves hit heavy but always come with a wink.

His latest adventure finds him on Alec Falconer’s ever-mischievous SUNNY label, following Phill Prince’s “Playground Pleasure” with an equally playful yet razor-edged two-tracker: “Different Shapes / Eurocup Mess.” One track born on a beach in Thailand, another out of admiration for Thierry Henry and a love letter to Electro - together they encapsulate Ballan’s refusal to play by any rulebook except his own.

Fresh off a Euro summer and ahead of his contribution to the art:cast series, Ballan sat down with Torture the Artist to talk about the accidents that make tracks special, guilty pleasures that would shock the underground, and why every morning starts with coffee, a computer, and a burst of creativity.

After living in Vietnam for two and a half years, I've been missing Manchester a lot, so I took a break from producing the atmospheric, futuristic techno I'm vibing with at the moment and put together this four-and-a-half-hour mix of my favourite records to play in the city.

When selecting records for this, it was an explicit rule that I’d had memorable experiences playing them in Manchester, from my residency at Sankeys and other smaller venues across the city, like Joshua Brooks, Hidden, South, Deaf Institute, Sound Control, Subspace and more. I wanted to make sure the vibe was 100% something that would work on a MCR dancefloor; all DJs all agree there is a unique energy to Manchester crowds. 

I programmed the mix the way I felt a night should progress - starting with deep, slow records, gradually building into a peak moment with more intense and energetic tracks, before easing the energy into an emotional finish as the night fades. No sudden moves and dramatic mood/bpm shifts. For me, that always seems to be a magic formula, especially in Manchester in those times, witnessed from countless hours on both sides of the decks.

Genre-wise, it's made up of deep house, Chicago house, US house, some techno-y stuff, acid, anything I felt had 100% Manchester energy and enjoyed a good few moments with.

Full track list is in the comments, but to highlight some records with special memories for MCR, to begin, I choose the Mike Dunn record God Made Me Phunky, which is just a 1000% MCR classic track! Dionne – Back On The Planet never grows old; even listening right now it sounds brand new. I could be here all day with these to be honest, but also Jacob Korn – You & Me... damn, nostalgia levels 999 on that one. Armante – Love Me Or Leave Me (F.O.S. Underground Mix) used to get a lot of plays and always brought the peak time energy – dark evil organ slammer! I also played Theo Parrish - Heal Yourself And Move first track in every single warm up set, so that would have been over a hundred plays or something - I felt it gently warmed up the soundsystem ready for the later chaos.

Notable other records: Brothers Vibe – Can U Feel It?, Kikumoto Allstars – Last Train To Chi-Town, Rocky Jones - The Choice Of New Generation. Ah, damn, it’s all flooding back to me. Lastly, I have to shout out Music Freaks – Tribal Trance (Tribal Mix) as that is the record I played out the most (other than HYAM ofc) - the bassline used to sound so sick on the Sankeys basement Phazon system, and it had a lot of pressure for a slower track, so another one for the warm-up sets, listening to the track right now, it kind of doesn’t make sense on headphones. Definitely one to be experienced on a club system with 1250 Manchester heads two-stepping, red strip lights and a low ceiling.
