Text of the ḥadīth:

عن [أبي يَعْلَى شَدَّادِ بنِ أَوْسٍ] رَضِي اللهُ عَنْهُ، عن رسولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قالَ: إِنَّ اللهَ كَتَبَ الإِحْسَانَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ، فَإِذَا قَتَلْتُمْ فَأَحْسِنُوا الْقِتْلَةَ، وَإِذَا ذَبَحْتُمْ فَأَحْسِنُوا الذِّبْحَةَ، وَلْيُحِدَّ أَحَدُكُمْ شَفْرَتَهُ وَلْيُرِحْ ذَبِيحَتَهُ. رواه مسلِمٌ.
From Abū Ya’lā Shaddād b. ʾAws from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ that he said, "Indeed Allāh has prescribed proficiency and benevolence in every thing. Hence, when you kill then kill proficiently, and when you slaughter, then slaughter with proficiency and benevolence. Let one of you sharpen his blade and let him grant ease to the slaughter animal." [Related by Muslim]

Means of Acquiring Beneficial Knowledge

Abū Ināyah Seif

- Shaykh Zayd al-Madkhalī (رحمه الله) on seeking and loving knowledge being a defining characteristic of the Salafī manhaj.
- “Allāh will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.” [Sūrah al-Mujādilah 58:11]
- “Is one who is obedient to Allāh, prostrating himself or standing (in prayer) during the hours of the night, fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the Mercy of his Lord (like one who disbelieves)? Say: ‘Are those who know equal to those who know not?’ It is only men of understanding who will remember (i.e. get a lesson from Allāh's Signs and Verses).” [Sūrah az-Zumar 39:9]
- Means of acquiring beneficial knowledge:
- 1. Acknowledging the dire need for knowledge and recognising the danger of ignorance. 
- Ibn al-Qayyim and Ibn Rajab (رحمهما الله) on the reality and importance of beneficial knowledge.
- A ḥadīth that highlights the dangerous consequences of ignorance. 
- Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) on ignorance being a deadly disease, and wherein lies its cure. 
- 2. Asking Allāh to increase you in beneficial knowledge.
- The command and supplication of the Messenger ﷺ regarding asking Allāh for beneficial knowledge.
- The meaning of beneficial knowledge, and its fruits.
- “It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allāh.” [Sūrah Fātir 35:28]
