Music Declares Emergency and The ClimateMusic Project partnered on a climate songwriting workshop on June 6, 2022 bringing together distinguished climate scientists and a curated group of songwriters to collaborate on the creation of songs that engage and activate the public.  

One of the songs written during the workshop, "I Want To Be Cool" was penned by Will Kimbrough & Brant Miller.  The ClimateMusic Project is reaching out to climate orgs to get behind the release. The idea is to have climate orgs promote the songs with their membership and provide calls to action aligned with needs for the climate movement. We are reaching out to prominent guest vocalists to lend their voice to this crisis.

Follow The Leader

A friend of mine, Jeff Marinelli, wrote this  poem titled "The Ballad of Pete & Heather". I loved the poem so, I arranged it in this song.  Jeff's original inspiration was from a John Lennon work, The Alphabet Poem. The 'H' was for the girl I was dating at the time.  This is from my elements album, 2005.

When a person develops diabetes sugar builds up in their blood. There is so much sugar their breath takes on a sickly-sweet smell; something like Juicyfruit gum. My sister Tracy developed diabetes when she was 3. I vividly recall our home's front screen door closing on a teary-eyed and scared little girl, as she left for the specialist. That began a journey which took our family along a tortuous and emotional path. 

In 1973, my father and mother invited four other couples to our small, North Miami apartment, creating the first chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (JDF) to find a cure. However, after raising significant funds the south Florida-based chapter of the JDF, the  South Florida-based parents grew unhappy about the lack of research focus at the national level. In addition, the JDF was not telling the entire truth about the deadly nature diabetes. They didn't want to scare parents, or their children, by telling them that diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, that it causes heart disease, kidney disease, and poor circulation causing amputations and, most tragically, it reduces life spans by an average of one third. So, that chapter split off to form the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (www.jdrf.org). 

My dad became the first executive director and my mom the first president. My parents and other founding members were adamant that 90% of all the funds collected would go directly to research for a cure. At the time, nobody believed a non-profit could keep their overheard cost so small. 

Through the JDRF, our family met Karen Fettarusso. Karen wrote a song about her life dealing with diabetes. My father played me the tape of the song called "Living day to day". It had been professionally recorded and I was awed. Her voice was beautiful as was Karen. I had just started playing guitar, so I challenged myself to write a song. Diabetes had stole her sight by the time I met Karen. I was able to play my song for her shortly before she died from complications due to diabetes. She was just 20.

By the early 2000s, the JDRF has raised over $1 billion and in 2013 contributes 80% to research. Early in the days of the JDRF, they funded a fledgling research unit at the University Of Miami School of Medicine. Eventually, this facility became the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation (DRIF / www.drifnet.org) and is now one of the institutions leading the search for a cure.  

In the early days of the JDRF, we always said there was a light at the end of the tunnel. The song was based in hope and research needs to expediently reach a cure for so many people.

2021 -If Steve Earle and Elvis Costello got pissed enough to write political tunes, they would sound like Pete Kronowitt songs. Pete writes songs with hooks, a dash of alt-country, a smidgen of something familiar yet new; catchy songs ranging from acoustic alternative pop and country to Indie with progressive lyrical phrasing but who likes being categorized? Pete founded Face the Music Collective, a guide for creative activists utilizing performances to inspire targeted individual action, one event at a time. With 5 albums to his credit, Pete Kronowitt combines performing and activism. Pete’s new album, Do Something Now, was released in September 2020.
