Joseph Campbell describes a shaman as "person, male or female, who…has an overwhelming psychological experience that turns him totally inward.  It's a kind of schizophrenic crack-up. The whole unconscious opens up, and the shaman falls into it."  We'll never know the whole truth about what happened when (Foxyen drummer and former Disney child actor) Shaun Fleming moved from the West Coast suburbs to New York, but whatever it was fractured his psyche, opened it up, and gave birth to Diane Coffee. 

In 2013, after joining the band Foxygen, Shaun Fleming left the green and golden fields of his hometown of Agoura Hills, CA to become the third roommate in a 700 square-foot, pre-war, closet-free Manhattan apartment.  He was welcomed to The Big Apple by a nasty flu virus that drained the last bit of California sunshine out of the skinny, Macaulay Culken-looking 26-year-old's body.  As he recovered, cabin fever supplanted the flu, and his relentless creative drive took over.  Low on funds and bored out of his mind, he spent the next two weeks alone in his bedroom writing and recording what would become the debut Diane Coffee LP My Friend Fish.     

Despite his limited means (using a pseudo drum kit consisting of a snare, one broken cymbal, and a metal pot, recording parts with an iPhone's voice memo app, playing a detuned guitar rather than a real bass, etc) My Friend Fish sounds fully realized and remarkably polished.  From a Donovan-esque song about Sriracha, to experiments with distortion and garage-rock, to songs like "All The Young Girls" in which he gleefully channels Tom Jones with sex-bomb confidence, on My Friend Fish Fleming's spell-casting powers are in full effect, inspiring panty-tossing glee.  After you finish listening, you'll wonder as you stretch out in bed and enjoy a cigarette, "Who is Fish?"

"At Fault" is a collaboration with my good friend Hiro Makino aka "There Is A Fox" (https://soundcloud.com/thereisafox). The song's early stages consisted of a re-arranged and re-sampled There Is A Fox original called "Bad Day." Hiro then graciously provided additional guitar tracks and layers to the sampled arrangement. We went back and forth adding and subtracting elements until we came out with this end result. This track was initially planned to be released with the new Spazzkid EP, but ended up wanting a life of its own. It stands for itself, pure and beautiful.

Following his acclaimed album Nonfiction and completed while touring across the US, The Range returns with a new EP Panasonic, out digitally and on vinyl on Donky Pitch March 24th, 2014.

Panasonic sees The Range further cement his position as one of electronic music’s most unique voices. Elements of light and dark meet dense orchestration, breakbeats and a fresh approach to sampling across all six tracks, which remain true to The Range’s love of R&B, Hip Hop and Drum & Bass channeled in a way that he has made his own.

It seems odd that the four-piece Wax Idols reside in Oakland, California. Especially considering the fact that the band’s sophomore LP "Discipline & Desire," out March 26th on Slumberland Records, embodies a dark, full, twisted sound: something that feels more appropriate to the foggy, damp British climate than that of sunny California. But that's Wax Idols -- zigging where other might zag, and always going their own way.

Compared to Wax Idols' debut LP "No Future" (a raw, hook-heavy punk effort written and recorded primarily by Fortune in 2010/2011 and released on Chicago's Hozac Records), "Discipline & Desire" is more a group effort as the band -- Jen Mundy (rhythm guitar/vocals), Amy Rosenoff (bass) and Keven Tecon (drums) -- contributed to the recording and writing process. Fortune dedicated herself to this record for over a year and the band were right there with her, playing with pattern, melody and stretching themselves beyond the comfort of unassuming hooks and into a darker, new wave territory. Discipline & Desire was produced and engineered by Monte Vallier (of Half Church and Swell) and co-produced by Fortune. Mark Burgess (of the British outfit The Chameleons) worked alongside Wax Idols & Vallier as an extra pair of ears and even played bass on the album closer "Stay In." Together they've crafted an album that's sleek and focused without being slick, and dark and intense without being at all humorless.

"Discipline & Desire" builds on Fortune’s debut full length effort in almost every way, rounding out as a far more complete record. The melodies are stronger, the vocals echoed and haunting, and the playing is at an unflagging level of intensity. First single “Sound of a Void” is a storming, full-throated late night anthem, while “Dethrone” and "When It Happens" shimmer and throb, perfect examples of Wax Idols' unique take on pop. Slower numbers like "Scent Of Love" and "Elegua" mesmerize and entrance, and the feedback-laced "AD RE:IAN" is nothing short of a masterpiece, punctuated by bursts of special guest Kristin Dylan Edrich's noise viola. Album closer "Stay In" wraps the up the album perfectly -- a mid-tempo melodic gem with a killer bassline and an uncanny balance of melody and atmosphere.

This is an inventive, brilliant record which solidifies the fact that Fortune is one of the best songwriters hiding in the shadows of the other California, where the sun doesn't always shine. But, judging by this fantastic album, she and her Wax Idols won’t be hiding for long.
