https://soundcloud.com/thea_a is a British born Berlin-based first-time music producer and Host/Producer of the 'What U Sayyyinnnn'?' radio show on Refuge Worldwide of Afro-Caribbean descent, who has had a lifelong love affair with music because of her obsession with radio, 'Top of the Pops', 'The Chart Show' and 'MTV', throughout her childhood and teenage years.

As an audiophile and former Deep House, House and Jazz, Funk and Soul curator; a wide range of music has influenced Thea, transcending genre and country of origin genre.


About the track
Off-kilter is the first offering from Berlin-based Brit and Refuge Worldwide resident Thea. This track keeps the listener glued to the dance floor as they hunt the sound of the wondering synths, whilst keeping up with the pace of the bassline as their mind skips along deciphering the elements of the track.

About the release
Berlin’s Open Music Lab (OML) presents a new compilation of original material from its diverse community of up-and-coming music producers: Diffraction. Drawing from a dazzling range of electronic genres, driven by a spirit of collaboration, Diffraction captures the potential of an artist community looking fearlessly beyond the mainstream.

The name Diffraction — is a scientific term for the way light or sound waves split and scatter, expanding their range—a perfect metaphor for what transpired at the end of OML’s eight-month Production and Artistic Development programme. Each of these creators took on a series of intensive educational workshops, with the aim of developing their own practice and musical identity. Collaboration was the cornerstone of these workshops, be it with other producers, seasoned industry professionals teaching the course, or their fellow students. With an endless array of fresh perspectives available to them, each producer hit a new level of creative vision. The result is this unique and inspired compilation.

On Diffraction, the artists showcase their individuality, channelling their cultural backgrounds, personal identities and lived experience. The tracks move through many moods and soundscapes, reflecting the journeys of their creators. From ambient slow-burners like SALA’s “What Are You Afraid Of”, to Gamelan-infused poetry from Panasiagirl, Thea’s minimal stomper “Ponderance”, Brasilian-inspired club from King Sleepy, and Palestinian techno from YA Z AN, Diffraction culminates with a euphoric drag anthem that's dying to be lip-synced.

Diffraction embodies the core values of OML: creating a tight-knit community of artists who embark on a creative journey together, sharing knowledge and expertise, and uplifting and encouraging each other on the way, ultimately giving back to the scene as a whole.

Last week, Fact Magazine posted their much passed-around 100 underrated DJs list, which we were very glad to see included Leonard Strickland - alias Big Strick. Raised in an influential household that had the Motown sound on the hi-fi all day everyday, Leonard began DJing in the early eighties which soon was followed by throwing his own parties and playing events around Detroit. Things slowed down at the beginning of the nineties with Big Strick moving most of his attention to raising a family, yet with some motivation from his younger cousin Omar-S around 2008, Leonard decided to give music another chance - resulting in his 7 Days EP and his debut release on FXHE. Since then, a lot of his time has been directed towards his own label 7 Days Entertaintment, on which he releases music primarily from himself but also offers an outlet for artists such as Generation Next and Reckless Ron. Alongside delivering us our 104th Truancy Volume, we caught up with Big Strick to chat about the label, playing in Europe with his son and making his first house track ever with Omar-S.
