Josey Rebelle – TTT Mixtape

Kourtney, aka Rose Kourts, is a Brooklyn-based DJ, party-starter, and dance floor fixture hailing from North Carolina. She’s made a name for herself with her dynamic sets and the infectious energy she brings to her performances. She plays from the heart, encouraging listeners and dancers to go on a journey of movement, connection, and emotional release through her signature blend of crunchy, funky, groovy, hype, and hypnotic selections. 

She can regularly be found setting off Brooklyn’s dance floors - performing alongside luminaries in house and techno, throwing events, collaborating with fellow local artists, and putting out label and radio mixes. She is a co-founder and resident of Sweet Kicks, a community-focused DIY party with sounds straddling house and rave, and of In Bloom, which centers around the joy of blooming forth on a pulsing dance floor. Additionally, she is the mastermind behind a NOW compilation-inspired party of feel-good music that brings unpretentious, nostalgic favorites to the club.

Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. A girl doing their best to channel kindness, fun, & understanding throughout our known universe

Q. How long have you been a part of the dance music community?
A. Since 2014, right after I graduated high school & started to help throw parties in Cleveland - almost like a whole decade now which is wild.

My relationship to it all continues to shift & grow but my life would be so much worse & empty without dancing & the people I've met thru it.


Q. Tell us about this mix.
A. So this mix is a super special one for me, composed of broken beat records I've picked up in NYC, but also Detroit & online. I've been really fortunate to be able to come to New York to play & see loved ones over the past few years, many of those times I'd end up leaving with a stack of these records in between some necessary laughs & growth in life. Every track in here honestly contains a snapshot of times I've felt able to really live my life & the people who've helped me realize we can all do that together - very much part of my soundtrack to feeling the sun & love around me in NYC.

Broken beat is a really special style of music for me - I was first introduced to it through Titonton Duvante & Charles Noel (Archetyp) through the way it influenced them in creating their unique vision of midwest techno that in turn has influenced a lot of my approach to music. 
The way that broken beat combines & dissolves so many eras of music (drum n bass, hip hop, 70s fusion, R&B, dub, etc) into new continuums is endlessly inspiring - always focusing on community, personal insight, celestial unknowns, the depths of life & self, the joys of moving with people, cultivating togetherness in a way that always makes me feel better after listening. 
Whenever I am having a weird day or don't know what music to play at home, I bust out my stack of broken beat records & just start mixing - this mix is very much a no thoughts vibes only kinetic result of that. 
I hope it can help soothe the mind & spirit for anyone else listening - a distillation of joy in the complicated world we share.

Included a thorough tracklist for this, really recommend checking any & all of these artists/tracks + the labels People, Main Squeeze, 2000black, Bitasweet, Archive, Co-Operation... the list goes on!
What is also really amazing about this music to me is the self contained but like infinite universe it's in, all sorts of producers & vocalists gliding in & out of each other's music - exchanging energy under all different names & sounds. Lawrence S. Williams Jr., better known as L.A. Williams, is an American DJ and producer from Chicago. Founder of the label Chisel, producer of over 27 releases, he has an idiosyncratic take to rhythms, sounds and grooves. 

As a huge fan, both impressed and beguiled, I wanted to shine a light on him. I still am often tripped up trying to blend his tracks while D'Jaying and fit them in a mix soooooooo I had to make this all L.A. mix ᏊˊꈊˋᏊ I spent the last few months collecting nearly all his releases on Discogs to use for the mix; a lot isn't available digitally, and it just felt right. 

I think the best way to hear his unique world and sound is via a tour of his various sides and styles, weaving and roiling, building and bubbling, jacking and smacking.

@livwutang has really arrived on the world stage in the last year. The Seattle-raised, NYC-based artist came up through DIY raves and pirate radio and is now a regular at cult clubs and festivals across North America, as well as being booked in for next year's Dekmantel Selectors. Her sound freely moves between dub, Central and West Africa rhythms and a history of Black American music. All this comes out in her widescreen sets, her curation of the Eto Ano label and her hosting of their show on The Lot Radio.  

The confidence of her selections and ability to shift through moods from the serene to the deep, the energetic to the melodic is evident in this week's mix. It slowly works through the gears from dubbed-out depths to buoyant club rhythms via tribal techno. There is an ever-present mysticism and spirituality that adds an extra layer of intrigue to the body-popping rhythms and it's that which will keep you coming back for more.

To mark the 150th Truancy Volume, we are very happy to share with you a mix from one of the most distinct and interesting artists around. Over the course of several EPs, two albums and many live performances, Laurel Halo has created music which is as strikingly original and engaging as it is unbound to conventions. The jagged Liaisons Dangereuses-sampling New Beat of Out of the Ordinary, sparse-yet-infectious gqom, Hard House Banton’s classic “Sirens”, dubbed-out house stompers, various strains of experimental music and much more – all these diverse sounds are played in a manner which helps provide a glimpse into what makes Halo’s work so compelling. There is an adventurousness in taste, an expert ear for detail and talent in seeking out exciting and surprising sonic combinations and contrasts – all skilfully bound together without ever feeling forced. Ultimately, the result is something which is captivating, irresistibly fun and rich for unpicking. To accompany the mix, we discussed over email her approach to playing live, her last record and the perception and reception of her work.
