Pariah @ EOS Radio 12/05/22

XDB is Kosta Athanassiadis – German by birth and in residence, with Greek parentage. He started djing in the early 90s and still plays vinyl only. Over the years his music was released on labels like Dolly, Harbour City Sorrow and Sistrum. In 2006 he started the record label Metrolux. There’s a refreshing lack of gimmickry to his approach – keeping it low-key allows him to be judged solely on the basis of talent. Enjoy!

Wanted to put this recording online before the end of the year. It was my first time at Freerotation and was one of my fave sets(and definitely my favourite weekend)of the year. The whole thing was so hyped up in my head (I've wanted to go for years) but it really lived up to expectations - believe the hype - very rare. An honour to be involved. Pariah has recently returned with Here From Where We Are, his first solo material in a while. The debut album on Houndstooth finds the producer develop beatless, synth heavy soundtracks into long, thoughtful pieces that are utterly absorbing. It’s a new musical identity for someone closely associated with visceral techno thanks to his work as one half of live duo Karenn with Blawan, but as a DJ he still pumps the dance floor. 

This mix is testament to that: it’s ninety minutes of diverse electronic music that dips into afro drumming, sleek minimalism and off kilter UK bass as well as some cheeky garage. As it wraps up, drums make way for subtle and supple synth rhythms that leave you utterly horizontal, a mile away from the sweaty state that proceeds it. Like Pariah himself, it’s tied to no one sound or scene and is wholly refreshing as a result.

I found this mixtape on a concession stand at a rave in LA in the mid nineties it was the first heard of him and I was really into this sound and buying lots of records related, it was the peak of nineties techno and I was also always hunting for tapes like this to study and better myself as a DJ. Over the following years I had quite a few conversations with Mike from his days at Record Time in search of the rare gems that I was having a hard time finding in LA. Years later Mike came to Los Angeles for the NAMM show and I put together a party and had him play, he stayed at my place I hadn't released any records yet and he kindly gave me production tips and shared some old stories about his days in Detroit sitting in my living room till the late hours of the morning. I am doing for him as I would like for anyone to do for me when i'm gone and share something positive to remember someone by.

I know many know Mike for his house music, I knew Mike as a Techno Dj from Detroit. Here i share a very rare Techno mix from Mike Huckaby I had this on repeat that summer, Enjoy !
